  1. I'm sorry I wasn't able to give more notice. Pain medicine has been rendering me unconscious.
  2. I'm sad to report that I can't make tonight's dinner. I've been having dental work over the course of the last month that just is not been going well. I had hoped pain medication would get me through, but chewing a steak is out of the question, I'm afraid.
  3. Morela are you joining us on Sunday? If not, why?
  4. I'm taking bets on how long it will take Mr. Rockwell to lock this topic. Anyone care to wager?
  5. I saw this and thought of Monica's post. Expand your summer drink choices with the Dark and Stormy, a refreshing Bermuda cocktail.
  6. I never really think of Sesto Sento the restaurant; more often it's Sesto Sento the bar and club. I ate there once and it was fine (nothing I'd race back for), but can't go back for, uh, other reasons anyway.
  7. DAMN! For me, race figures into this not one iota and I resent that this immediately got to the point of citing "over-educated white people." None of you here know me all that well so I won't expect you to understand where I'm coming from and honestly I could not care less about trying to explain myself. Chef, if you are reading this, your restaurant is a place I've been meaning to try for quite some time now. I've heard such raves about the establishment and the food, if not the service. The things that most of us are saying regarding the name of your new store are not meant to be hostile. This web site is for talking about experiences and expressing opinions. Call your store whatever the hell you please. I might have checked it out in spite of finding the name awkward to say, but knowing that you might view me as just another over-educated, snooty white person, I won't bother. But good luck to you just the same.
  8. I like riff-raff. All I was saying is that the service is sucking and the food has gone from good to just OK in my experience. I'll still go there though, I think. For now.
  9. Last night? Bardeo. No RW special, just a nice snack finished off with strawberry shortcake.
  10. I have no hostility toward this chef or any other. I just think the name is dumb.
  11. I'm relieved to read everyone's reactions, varied as they are. My first impression was "wow, that's dumb." I can't imagine saying "I'm going to dSto" anytime soon. It's kind of how I feel whenever I try to pronounce Pho correctly and just feel...awkward. My next impressions were that the name is bordering on offensive. Finally, I thought "wow, that doesn't make any sense at all when you figure what they're selling."
  12. I think we need a topic dedicated to "I saw you..." a la the City Paper. So many of us are in the same places on the same nights .
  13. Where is that menu anyway? The other thread? I will try to dig it up but if anyone finds it first, feel free to bump it for the menu. Mmm...meat!
  14. I can't believe I've still not been to Palena...I can walk there and everything.
  15. "Sauce without the Simmer" (Washington Post)
  16. The food is pretty good at Dogfish Head (and the pizzas are probably among the best things on the menu), but after a horrible experience there a few weeks ago, I can't imagine ever going back. The service wasn't just bad, it was...oblivious in spite of several conversations with the manager. If you do go, for your own sake: avoid the noisy-as-hell upstairs dining room.
  17. I was always a fan of the typewriter method, butter and salt (sometimes seasoned salt) and pepper. However after a lot of dental work, I've been cajoled by my dentist cutting if off the cob. It's not as fun, but it tastes just as good. Last night post-chop, I sauteed the corn in butter, red pepper flakes, a little salt and a pinch of minced garlic. Soooo good!
  18. Has anyone been to Sushi Ko during RW? If so, what's the deal? I have been too lazy to call...
  19. Is the RW info available on your web site (e.g., what's supplemental)?
  20. Went to Sette on Thursday and was pretty disappointed. IMHO, the thing it has going for it is mostly atmosphere. I think both the food and service have fallen off.
  21. How about the balsamic brown butter sauce served with white bean ravioli at Po in NY? Mmmm.....

    Home-made pasta

I'd love to make something like this...brown butter, sage, some cream. Sounds great and simple, right? Well, not for this novice so if any of you can be more specific and supply a recipe or other guidance, I'd love it!
  23. Rocks - does the Big Name restaurant serve ventworm??
  24. Cafe Atlantico, or so I've heard. I like the ones served at Habana Village in Adams Morgan (though it's a total dive). They serve mojitos with a fresh stalk of sugar cane to chew on which is a great touch, IMHO. But my real favorite? Caipirinhas at Rumba Cafe.
