Happy Birthday @Steve Irby. Your dinner at home looked delicious. Monday's dinner was seared tuna with soy sipping sauce, rice, and a salad of lettuce and peppers, which were the only vegetables n the fridge. Last night, miso broiled salmon in a coconut sauce with spinach and summer squash, and more rice

Yesterday ended up being a total pouring rain washout, so no beach pictures. Our only foray from the house was when we went into town to attempt to have dinner at the local tavern. We walked in and encountered the rudest hostess I think I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with. This went beyond New England reserved to outright rudeness. Needless to say, we walked right back out. We ended up back at Viera on Main instead. Drinks (martini and phony Negroni) A shared fritto misto Swordfish with chickpea panisse and cauliflower puree steak frites Raspberry-strawberry bread pudding for dessert That’s it for this visit. I have had enough restaurant food for a while. See you back on the dinner thread. -

When I was a kid my family lived near the beach in Westerly RI, and my parents had friends who were fishermen. They would drop sacks of cull lobsters and extra clams off at the house for us often. I loved, loved, loved steamer clams. They were my favorite food. Then, one year, when I was about seven or eight, I ate three heaping bowls of steamers and two whole lobsters at a 4th of July family picnic. I got so sick! I have not really been able to enjoy steamers or lobster since. I still really love littleneck clams though. My husband orders steamers once in a while, as long as there’s someone to share them with — he had them at the Beachcomber last week. Yesterday we went into town to go shopping. It was crowded, and we bought nothing except ice cream. Last night we celebrated my niece’s birthday a little early with a sushi dinner at Bluefins. Sister’s cocktail Crispy tuna rice Platter of sushi rolls that my niece selected for us to share She had a bread pudding for dessert. It was too huge to finish! We stopped at the lookout at the beach next to the house to check out the almost full moon after dinner Chatham Light This morning we drove down to Chatham Bars Inn for Sunday breakfast. It was very foggy and damp. We have had great weather for the past few weeks so I cannot complain Niece had waffles with fruit Husband had the same thing he ordered when we stayed here a few weeks ago, poached eggs on sourdough with tomato and prosciutto I had poached eggs on spicy ratatouille with manchego cheese and sister had smoked salmon It’s pouring rain now, so not much on the docket for today. Sister and niece are heading back to our home this afternoon, and husband and I have one more night here before going home tomorrow. Dinner tbd. -

We spent the afternoon at Monomoy again You can go clamming here as long as you have a permit. There were steamers sticking right out of the sand at lowest tide My sister and niece came back for the weekend. We decided to try a new to us place in town called Pates. I took photos of the menu (the lighting was tricky, sorry for the glare and shadows) Bread with bean dip Drinks. I don’t know what my sister and husband ordered, but my niece and I both had a watermelon-hibiscus mocktail. It was pretty good. oysters Two orders of tuna cones Potato chip crusted cod Scallops with sucotash Pork chop with pork belly fried rice Seafood pan roast We ordered two desserts to share. A ‘snowball” (basically a hot fudge sundae with coconut) and a coffee mousse We were all stuffed!- 787 replies

Looks like you are right, from what I can find, it’s privately owned on a private dirt road. I guess the only way to see it now is from the beach. We have been hiking in the Momomoy Wildlife Preserve the last few days. It’s bird migration time, and we have been picking up lots of new birds with our Merlin apps. There are dedicated birders with massive camera equipment out there to catch the birds coming through. I’m too lazy to even carry my basic DSLR, let alone one of those giant telephoto lenses the serious birders have. Here are a couple of pictures I took at low tide on Wednesday Neither of us felt like much for dinner, so we just ordered a clam pizza from a shop in town. We got an arugula salad to put on top as well. It was fairly good. We went back to Monomoy today and hiked another seven miles. We were unsure of when exactly the tide would submerge the trail, so headed back out of there on the early side. We went to a different area of town for the sunset. This is Harding’s Beach. After sunset we had dinner at Pisces. Martini for husband, n/a gin and tonic for me We shared a tuna tartare appetizer Then he had the same oyster spaghetti he ordered here in June I had grilled swordfish with pesto ravioli We shared a slice of key lime pie for dessert- 787 replies

You can see it well from the beach. We go to Fisher Beach often to beachcomb, and it’s down the beach to the left, maybe 1/2 mile or a little further. You have to go at off times in the summer unless you have a Truro sticker, but there’s parking for about six cars at Fisher. I thought there were guided tours of the studio available too, but maybe I had that info wrong. -

Yes! He always picks the worst flavors. It has become a running joke in our family. One year he got jelly doughnut, another time he actually ordered one called dirt bomb! I think he does it because he knows I will never finish my normal flavor, so he can try something weird and then eat the rest of mine. I love Hopper’s paintings. My favorite is Cottages at Wellfleet, since we have stayed in the house in the center of the painting many times. We don’t rent it anymore for many reasons, but we had lots of family celebrations there back in the day. -

Everyone ended up heading home yesterday, and my husband and I were feeling lazy, so we just walked down the street to Mac’s. It is a 2 minute walk. Drinks. I had a mocktail with jalepeno, lime and basil. Husband’s drink had watermelon, I think we shared an order of oyster bao buns and shrimp and scallop dumplings Then I had a spice crusted tuna over soba noodles and husband had halibut with lobster mashed potatoes We went for a walk down to the pier after dinner. We discussed getting ice cream, but were too full. The sky was crazy. No filter on this photo, the sky really looked this red It only lasted for a few minutes, then turned a more reasonable color This morning we checked out of the Wellfleet house and headed up to Truro to do some exploring before going to Chatham. We visited Highland Light and hiked a couple of easy trails with views of the dunes and ocean We are staying at the same house we rented earlier this year, the one with the massive refrigerator. We stopped by the Chatham fish pier to buy fish for dinner, but the market was closed today. The seals were still milling around We went to the other fish market in town, and I made warm lobster rolls After dinner we walked into town and husband got the worst sounding ice cream, fluffernutter. The owner gave him a small scoop of the wild blueberry too, so he could try it.- 787 replies

Based on what I heard that does not surprise me 😂. That said they had a singalong of some of their other songs at one point and we could hear everyone singing the words so I guess they do have a fan base, even if it’s small. People definitely came in just to go to the festival. Today’s our last full day in Wellfleet. My brother and my husband’s brother are going home today after the traffic off the Cape lightens up (it’s absolutely terrible right now). I am not sure what my sister and niece are doing. They might be leaving this afternoon, or they might be staying until tomorrow morning. My husband and I are going back to Chatham for a week starting tomorrow morning. -

Saturday my sister, niece and I stopped by the other breakfast restaurant in town, called Brekkies, which I think is an atrocious name. I really don’t like going out to breakfast, but they do, so I went along. Here’s the inside. Sister’s pancakes Niece’s waffle We really needed to charge our car, and the closest level three charger is in Provincetown, so we ended up back there. We charged up, spent the afternoon at Herring Cove, then went for an early dinner at Front Street. Fried zucchini blossoms to share Calamari with garlic sauce Shrimp scampi Puttanesca with shrimp Zuppa de pesce Calamari fra diavolo Gnocchi with truffle cream sauce Niece had a bread pudding for dessert We made it back to Herring Cove just in time for sunset Today my husband and I did our usual harbor walk at low tide. I took this panorama of the houses on the beach. We’ve stayed in most of them at one point over the years. We then went over to the ocean side to walk there. I tried putting my feet in but it was way too cold for me! There were a decent number of people swimming. They are hardier than me. Dinner was at Mac’s Shack. It was even more crowded than usual because there was a music festival on the nearby pier tonight. Oysters Spicy tuna mango martini Halibut turadito Fried clams Fish and chips Toro poke bowl and tuna roll with avocado, mango, and cream cheese for my niece ritz cracker bluefish with creamed spinach scallops with bacon on corn bisque We walked down to the pier after dinner to get some ice cream and check out how crowded the festival was. The sky looked pretty The house we are renting is very close to the pier, so we walked back and listened to the concert from the deck. The headliner was a band called Wheatus. I thought I didn’t know them, until they started playing. Now I have “teenage dirtbag” stuck in my head 😂- 787 replies

More of the usual today. This is the view of the tidal creek from the back deck of the house we are staying at. We drove out and decided to try and get a parking spot at the Beachcomber for dinner. We lucked out. We not only got a parking space, we got an open table. The menu never changes specials Steamer clams Fried clams (whole bellies, of course) Caesar salad with grilled shrimp Oyster po boy Fish sandwich We were seated next to the raw bar/steamer station and I snapped this picture in a quiet moment. Right after I took it, the guy on the left got 12 tickets. Cahoon Hollow beach. The dune seems to erode more every year Some of us wanted to go for a beach walk after dinner, so we headed over to Duck Harbor It was too cloudy for a sunset, but we had a nice walk until lightning started up in clouds offshore Everyone left the beach rather rapidly after that!- 787 replies

Wednesday my husband and I walked into town to go to the farmers market. I bought a couple jars of local honey to bring home: one early summer honey (lighter and sweeter), and one made from August flowers (darker and more potent) I noticed we have an apple tree growing in the yard. I am not sure what type of apples they are (google image says they are Liberty apples) or if it’s allowed to pick them as a renter, so I am just leaving them there. We spent the afternoon walking around the beach and pier near the house. We ended up having to jog back to the house because severe weather moved in very quickly. We had crazy lightning and even large hail. A beautiful rainbow appeared in the backyard after it was over. My sister and niece showed up and wanted to go to Mac’s Shack (of course). There was a 90 minute wait for a table. Drinks It was very dark by the time we got food, so I only took a few pictures. Oysters Fried cod cheeks Seafood stew with clams, mussels, and scallops in a lobster broth Halibut with lobster mashed potatoes Yesterday my husband and I got up early and did a six mile walk. My niece and I then walked out to the little used bookstore in town. It was pretty depleted since they are closing for the year in a few weeks. My niece found a couple of things to buy, but the only thing I discovered was an entry for my annual “strangest book I spotted on the Cape” contest My sister really wanted to go to dinner at Pepe’s in Provincetown. I am not a huge fan of this place but was overruled. We did go for a long walk at Herring Cove beach before dinner, which was nice. The meal was, as I anticipated, pretty mediocre. Oysters Rockefeller (dry) Grilled vegetables with burrata (I think they forgot to grill the vegetables. they were essentially raw) Clam flatbread (did not try, but was told it was good) Cod dish (lukewarm) Clams with linguica (no comment from my brother, but he finished it so it must have been pretty good) Halibut (overcooked, everything on the plate but the fish was cold) Steak frites (overcooked) Coconut cake. This was good. They charged $7 for the scoop of ice cream that was on the $16 slice of cake. Sigh. Hopefully we can skip this place for the next few years. We barely made it back to the beach in time for sunset Afterglow- 787 replies

They were battered and had a bang bang sauce on them, so not traditional flavors for a taco at all. The shrimp were also very large. The whole thing was messy to eat. I ended up taking it apart and using a knife and fork. The tuna topped oysters were not a hit with my husband or his brother. They both felt that the flavors didn’t really work together, and the texture was weird. They did finish them though! I’ll try and bring this trip food report up to date in the morning, it’s been a busy few days. -

Yes, it was. Flat shoes, no noticeable makeup… I think it was probably your niece 😀 My sister and niece are coming to join us tomorrow, so we have been trying to go to the places my brother likes and my niece hates before they arrive. Yesterday that meant the Pearl My husband ordered raw oysters topped with tuna. I am not sure why. I refused to try them. I am a raw oyster purist. Plain, thank you. He shared them with his brother. Drinks. Blueberry sour mocktail, cranberry margarita, watermelon margarita Fried shrimp tacos Fish and chips Grilled swordfish It was low tide when we left. These fisherman had to use a ladder to get into their boat Today my husband and I got up early and went for a six mile walk while our respective brothers snoozed the morning away. We stopped in to a new breakfast spot called Cape to Cape. We both had lattes and my husband got an egg sandwich. He said it was very good. I had already eaten before he woke up, so did not try anything from the food menu. We visited a pond in town (the water was too cold to swim, but it was pretty) and then went to Indian Neck for another walk Later we walked down to Mac’s Shack for some (plain!) oysters and an order of jalepeno yellowtail sashimi We then walked into town to check out Hatch’s fish market. They had bluefin tuna, so we bought some of that and grilled at home tonight.- 787 replies

Yesterday was not much of a food day. I let my brother pick everything we did, and all he wanted was a drink at an outdoor bar in Provincetown called the Aqua Bar, and a burger for dinner. So that’s what we did. But first my husband and I went for a walk around Wellfleet. Some scenic views around town. Uncle Tim’s bridge Here’s the view from the Aqua Bar. My brother got his margarita and was happy. Drinks at the burger restaurant. The orange one was mine. It was basically passion fruit juice. My brother in law’s representative burger. I had a vegetarian burger. It was greasy, but again, my brother was happy. I walked by @weinoo’s relative’s place, the Lady Slipper. It was only around 6pm and it was already packed! There was a lady at the door with a clipboard taking names for later entry. So they are doing well indeed! I was full of mediocre vegetarian burger and wanted to go to the beach to walk it off, so we headed to Herring Cove. We found another shipwreck! Here’s a close up The offshore storms are uncovering all sorts of treasures. Sunset- 787 replies
