Wow! Didn't expect to see this thread come alive again ... and I have found even more uses for iceberg in the interim ...lettuce wraps are my new delight! -
bumping up this topic after reading this BBC article on mutton. Do you ever buy and eat mutton? Is it only true in the UK or is it gaining popularity in the States as well? How do you make the mutton dishes if you purchase this type of meat?

Tonight's Shabbos dinner had a distinctly oriental theme: Chicken soup with thin vermicelli noodles, scallions Tomato salad with sherry vinaigrette Oriental chicken breasts marinated in Five Spice Blend, soy sauce, scallions Jasmine rice Roasted golden beets with orange peel, fresh ginger Cranberry-apple stuffed acorn squash Carpaccio of oranges scented with star anise orange reduction Challah Wine Oriental Chicken breasts in Recipe Gullet Orange carpaccio recipe in Recipe Gullet Turned out to be an interesting meal .. Shabbat shalom! I have a wide collection of oriental figures from my years of teaching about Ancient China ...

a variety of garlic presses compared by price .. but my personal press is the OXO Good Grips which suits my needs in a home kitchen. I actually snapped one of these in two with a hard chunk of garlic once!

This is a dessert recipe using star anise that I will be trying this weekend ... Chocolate Ice Cream with Anise-Scented Orange Carpaccio but I may change the ice cream to something more vanilla-esque so as not to conflict with the oranges and anise tastes ... looks inviting!

This site agrees with your list by choosing pretty much the same films but then there was also a film called Dinner Rush where you can watch some clips in Quicktime ... and even find recipes from the film ... thread on Babette's Feast with recipes ... Indian Food Movies thread as well ...

What absolutely divine recipes and ideas everyone has come up with! I can't make the pork dish because of kashruth issues in my kitchen but can do beef, veal, poultry, etc. I think I will most definitely try Dottie's Chicken from Recipe Gullet though! Most appreciative of these cool ideas ... off to try that simple syrup, Katie! even someone as simple as I can see the value in that recipe! Katie's recipe, sort of, from Cocktails for Fall Foliage thread ...

Have seen lots about poaching fruit in it ... one with a jasmine tea .. but it smells as if it might be overpowering .. and you have to enjoy the licorice taste, I would think .. might use one less star anise when I first begin ... managing that overpowering issue ... thanks for your warning here though ....

Funny that you should mention Chinese Five Spice ... it was also part of my order from San Francisco yesterday ... and I was wondering how it might best be used to add new flavors ... just found some dishes made with both ... sea bass simmered in these two spices and beef filets as well ...

I just got my first bottle of star anise and was looking for recipes. This was among the first ones I located: recipe here for poached chicken... and I know Jackal has a recipe for long simmered marbelized eggs .... Do you have any favorite ways of using star anise? Can star anise recipes be both sweet but also sometimes savory?
