Moi? Too shy? Not possible! I have to make the glaze and then will upload my apple cake photos shortly ... before my husband takes out his fork and favorite dessert plate and digs in with no regard for the integrity of the finished cake! Otherwise? Crumby pictures of an empty baking dish!

and this is most assuredly an issue ... as a former teacher, I can tell you that setting standards for food being brought in from home is a real problem. -
Parental monitoring of kids' school meals
Gifted Gourmet posted a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
article from CNN If you are a parent, this might make for some interesting reading ... and my question is, simply put: "how can a child learn to make choices if the parent is doing that for him/her?" Parents go online to track what their kids eat at lunchtime? I don't know but it changes the responsibility to the parent this way, no? A warning sounds? Like a deep voice saying "step away from the brownie and no one will get hurt!" -
At the moment, Edna Lewis' apple cake is in the oven and I will be making the caramel glaze shortly to put on top ... bet our dessert tonight will be a good one ... too bad that's our entire meal ...

Red Grapefruit Earns a Star on Cholesterol Test
Gifted Gourmet replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
I just completed my reading of a few medical articles on the use of statin drugs and their interactions with grapefruit juice ... this one especially and will leave grapefruit juice alone until I know that I am doing no harm to myself .. I could switch to a pravastatin but the Lipitor is supposedly one of the best available and I won't risk that ... Thanks for all of the insight which you have offered here everyone! Much appreciate your interest! -

article from the science section of NYT I happen to love red grapefruit but can not have it since I am currently taking a statin drug. Why is it good for others but not for people who take these medications? Anyone have some ideas as to when, or even if, I can ever enjoy a red, luscious grapefruit again? Thanks for any and all advice, Grapefruit-less Gifted Gourmet

Just located a very timely article from Slate online: The Popcorn Palace Economy do yourself a favor and read on .. quite appropriate for this thread .... -
Are you asking me specifically or is that a general query? If the former, then I can say that I have used a Battenberg lace cloth but the table is so elegant, I hate to cover it at all... and rarely do so. I have very nice imported placemats which I use when I want to serve but preserve the polished tabletop look.

This is perhaps the fourth or fifth dining room set that we have had in our marriage .. and is the one I have always wanted ... burled rosewood top, seats 10 when panels are added, black lacquer trim, chairs have the same black lacquer ... oriental look matches the small curio nearby .. white shantung silk seats on chairs ... yes, it is perfect on our white rugs and with the ivory drapes ...

Ideally in keeping with the public food theme, Atlanta should have a whirling bucket of grits ..not unlike the old bucket of KFC ... but this is kind of interesting .. apparently it was in the Bronx last summer: click here to see this exhibit

Last Shabbos was another "theme meal" .. this time it was a faux summer picnic .. cole slaw, potato salad (husband's favorite), and fried chicken .. even though it was cold outside, it seemed refreshingly different .. "all we need", the wise husband concluded, "is a red checkered tablecloth and a few mosquitoes" ... after a few mouthfuls, he got into the spirit of the theme ...

Judy, what a great, detailed "report" on the meal you made .. seems that you have analyzed all aspects of both the preparation as well as the end results. I, too, will be doing the scallions in cream and it sounds like the result is well worth the even minimal effort that this recipe entails. No one can afford using heavy cream so liberally but your substitution sounds equally perfect to complete the dish. Thanks again for offering us a glimpse into Edna Lewis' creations ...

Welcome to the Shabbos thread, Miraklegirl! Your menu sounds absolutely terrific! Chopped liver with carmelized onions on crackers is my kind of food ... and your onions stuffed with mashed potatoes sounds equally delicious ... we look forward to hearing all of your food creations here and thanks for not lurking any longer .. b'shalom!

Marcia, that souffle is simply gorgeous! It makes me want to run downstairs to my kitchen and whisk one up ... but then everyone would wake up, demanding some of it!
