  1. Which is precisely why I thought it would be understood and appreciated here at eGullet! Sometimes, there is something which requires no discussion and simply more reading for pleasure .. which is the case here, obviously!
  2. Walker's of Scotland Shortbread and, for the very same reasons, Pepperidge Farms Butter Chessman ...Walkers website with pictures Like the crispness and the sweet buttery taste on both.
  3. Ah yes, the obsessive-compulsive group thread on just where each item must go.. anyone remember the SNL "Anal Retentive Chef" routine?? With the late Phil Hartman making each item so neat and tidy? Now that was really funny! SNL script
  4. None too easy flushing these crooks out ...
  5. Getting those giblets through a narrow straw can't be any too easy ...
  6. the article ... What can I tell you? It really boggles the mind that someone is actually taking the time to think of this stuff ... still contemplating the concept of "fruitcake soda" ...
  7. ah, yes, those freegans again ...
  8. Exactly what I am looking to do... ← But then there is this caveat: you may love your sterling for years, the pattern, the way you use it, etc .. then your child says, "sorry, I want to choose my own when I get married..." The sterling I have may not be anything my own child wants ... she thinks it is elitist to own this stuff ...
  9. Today's good quality stainless is quite exceptional and, if you don't wish to invest in really expensive stuff just yet, this will work just as well .. and it doesn't need to be insured ... But then you will want to hand down something to your children one day, and that is why sterling silverware is a really nice heirloom gift ...
  10. There are many websites which offer all different brands of sterling silver flatware .. and nicer department stores and jewelers do as well. This is the pattern I got for my wedding:Towle's El Grandee and for many years, I resisted using it except for "good" occasions ... now, in retrospect, everyday is a good occasion ... Since I have four sets of kosher silverware: dairy, meat, Passover dairy, and Passover meat ... I have a few different patterns ... Silverware must be heavy for me to feel it is "quality" .. Silver Super Store with the prices for all types ... but you have to feel them in your hand to really appreciate what it feels like ...
  11. So, with that thought in mind, take a look at what I believe is a fantastic website on tableware and the types of things people have been eating with for many years: The history of eating utensils Sections cover the history of many different topics: Forks, Chopsticks, Knives, Portable cutlery, and Spoons Do you still have tableware from the history of your family that dates back in time? Any special pieces your family has given to you? Treasure and use only on special occasions?
  12. This is hysterical!

  16. Freshly blanched mange touts bright green and crisp. First Vidalia onions so sweet and juicy. Baby asparagus in early spring. Plugra melting on a freshly cooked ear of new corn. Egg yolks breaking, oozing lushly over crisply buttered toasted English muffin. Juicy red plums full of warm sunkissed flavor. Garlic butter just warmed and giving off its first delectable smells. Juicy slabs of watermelon in the heat of the summer in Georgia. These are a few of my favorite things ... raindrops on roses ... whiskers on kittens ... Thanks, snowangel, for the memories that only pure simplicity can confer ...
  17. Hellllooo! Can we please stop snapping those stocking garter belts and return to the true intent of the article under discussion?? Do you ration yourself to one square of real chocolate because of vanity??

  22. eGullet discussion on this topic Jackal is absolutely correct when he says this can be a minefield if one is unfamiliar with the laws of kashruth (kosher rules)... but there is help and that is what we here can provide with pleasure! correct! depends on where you are but, if you are in Rehovot, as opposed to downtown Keokuk, Iowa, the odds are much better!an explanation
  23. even though this topic is about restaurant pilferage specifically, I happen to have an entire set of towels from the Drake Hotel in Chicago where my late father-in-law visited for the annual Furniture Show ... One day, when my daughter first learned to read, she looked at me, eyes wide open, and innocently asked, "Mom is our last name Drake??" Forgive me for my digression .. simply irresistable, thanks Robert Palmer! ... back to pilferage in restaurants ... carry on!
  24. Is everyone out there in some sort of Witness Protection Program?? Officially, eGullet does not allow the use of hidden cameras, folks ... no confessions extracted without the express permission of the victim ... er, poster ...
