Menton - Thanks for the suggestions re: seafood, that gives us a couple places not too far afield to check out.

toddevan - Where's Saigon Grill? This is the first I've heard of that one.

I think I'll skip the rec for California Pizza Kitchen, though. This doesn't make any sense to me. You're bashing chains on one hand and recommending one out the other. You don't even mention which mall you're talking about (there are like 5 of them), and I pretty much avoid most the Paramus malls anyway.

Seafood Gourmet, a retail store that has cooked entrees, has the best Fried Scallop sandwich I've ever eaten.  On the main drag in Maywood.  They also will fry any seafood they sell, and will do it either breaded or battered.  Their Manhattan Chowder rocks as well.

tableclothes are a matter of taste, obviously. i can do without them.

The Sea Shack is certainly an old-school, upscale restaurant, and resting on its laurels from what i've read. It's probably not fair to compare it to LS, as LS is a young and vibrant place...with really good oysters. :biggrin:

I think this answer got "lost" in all the other digressions...

'Sea Shack on the Hackensack/Hasbrouck Heights border has oysters cheaper than Legal and with tablecloths!

well, i'll let you eat the "cheaper" oysters. i'll pay the extra 50 cents a pop for oysters that are fresh and from a menu with a great selection...at LS. :raz:

To answer my own question, I called them. They have 2 tables "out front" (Hmm, I hope that is inside the store, not on the sidewalk). We're gonna check it out and report back later.

You need to go to the Oyster Bar, in NYC, where they have about 20 types of oysters. Blows away Legal.....

Have you also tried North American Lobster on Rte 17 in East Rutherford? Haven't been in a while, but they used to have a very fresh raw bar as well.

You won't see me at Legal or Red Lobster or any chains any time soon. I would feel like a lemming waiting on those lines.

it sure do. they are a bit sloppy with their liquor, though.

you mean you'd go to North American Lobster Company before LS?!?! oh man, i just lost all respect for you. :biggrin:

I've never eaten in North American's restaurant, but their retail seafood quality and selection has gone downhill. It seems now to be on par with most supermarket seafood departments.

bought some supposedly fresh fish from North American several months back and this place has fallen to the bottom

the one in Parsippany as well has fallen downhill

Parsippany fresh fish used to be very good. Now it is on the way down

Traprock Brewery in Berkeley Heights has raw oysters on the bar menu. Only one kind available. Decent wine list, the beer brewed on site is passable at best. They splash the oysters with olive oil, unless you stop them. I like mine with a little salt and a squeeze of lemon.

As long as places in NYC are up for discussion, Pearl Oyster Bar on Cornelia is a gem. The best fried oysters in the City plus a great lobster roll sandwich and 2 different kinds of raw oysters. The place is tiny and best visited for lunch.
