i was thinking of making candy hearts with a written message, like the ones we all know and love (i think necco makes them?). but i have no idea how to do the writing, or if it is possible to do at home. any ideas? thanks in advance!

Are you thinking of making them the same size as what you can buy? If so, I don't know what to suggest for something that small. Are you going to make them larger, and do you want the lettering like they have on the small candies, where it looks like it's soaked into the candy rather than on top like icing? Maybe you can cut words or letters out of potato and use food coloring to stamp words on your hearts. Trying to think of some method that's safely edible......

What about just making sugar cookies and using icing to write? I've seen this done somewhere before and am thinking about doing it this year. I might make them for my boyfriend's work and write "I "heart" ________ (insert name of company he works for.) Cheesy, but I'm sure they'll like it!

It depends on what the hearts will be made out if, I guess, but it's doable. It'll be extremely time consuming, especially if they'll be as small as the traditional ones, but doable. Those traditional ones you see ar of course machine made.

If they'll have a smooth, flat non porous surface you could adhere an edible image to them, which involves purchasing a new canon bubblejet printer, the edible ink cartridges for it, and the frosting sheets. But that'll be a lot of fumbling with cutting and adhering all of those.

For a porous surface, you could have a small rubber stamp made, or several with different writing, and stamp the messages on that way. You'll also need a small flat sponge (those make-up sponges would work best for this) so you can use it as a stamp-pad with a food colour mix in it, for the stamping. That won't be as time consuming or as costly as the first option, but still a giant pain in the ass, I'd imagine.

What are you making the hearts out of, and how big will they be?

they won't be as small as the mass-produced ones. i had not decided if i was going to make them out of candy or cookie - i wanted to see what responses i would get and then see what would work better for me and my (limited) kitchen. Thanks for the responses so far- keep them coming!
