Manny Ferreria’s Senova opened last night.

The former Coco Pazzo space has been brightened to burnt-by-the-sun goldenrod, the board floor refinished to gloss, the long draw of bar that scribes the open kitchen sanded and stained. Chairs upholstered the colour of changing leaves looked pretty in front of the stone tabletops.

More cheery news: Sunday is paella night, Thursday is for roasted suckling pig, Bairrada-style.

It’s a warm room, as you might expect from Ferreria (Le Gavroche) and has all the touchpoints of hospitality—fuelled by a formidable wine cellar—necessary to placate the elements.

Bitch?

Anyhow.. the menu certainly looks delicious and very appealing. But concerning the mains, I'm failing to see strong Portuguese influence.. but among the tapas and appetizers, it certainly looks like Portuguese peasant comfort food at its best. I'm also very interested in checking out the saffron ice cream under their desserts :raz:

Bitch?

Let me very clear--in addition to a cheap pun, i.e. Senova Bitch? I also said: Unlikely!

But concerning the mains, I'm failing to see strong Portuguese influence.

I was a little curious about this too, but then reminded myself I was in Kerrisdale. Note the interesting children's menu. I expect many will be the Crofton House essays splattered with salt cod.

That menu looks fantastic. I'm especially interested in these dishes:

*Scallop Ceviche with Guava Vinaigrette

*Marinated grilled Quail with Sherry and Espresso Sauce

*Braised Rabbit with Pipperade and Madeira sauce

I love braised rabbit but I don't see it on the menu very often so I have to do it myself if I want it. All the tapas look great!

What's included in the set dinners?

Rabbit? Roasted pig? Armagnac? Horchata? A mojito that sounds like the real thing (ie no mint syrup)?

A visit is in order!

ETA: In today's Vancouver Sun, M. Parry could not resist the pun either and wrote: "If Ferreira were to move into an earlier [Kenny] Bogas locale at the Kitsilano-waterfront foot of Yew street, he could call it Senova Beach" :raz:

I believe, in reference to Mr. Bogas's resume at Saltimbocca, Mangiamo, Coco Pazzo et al, that he may have also coined the expression "Bogas by name and by nature".

Menu sounds great.

Perhaps they could offer an evening on Spanish Banks with the Paella and Sangrias and call it

"Senova Beach"...

sorry,

didn't closely read the earlier post and see that mr parry had already made that pun. the head can be a little thick the day after the night before particularly with the Oilers celebrating a rare win.

Manny Ferreria’s Senova opened last night.

Interesting, but seems over priced, even for the location. If not priced in that manner, the cuisine choice would probably entice a wider range of clientale, thus ensuring a greater recommendation.

RESTRICTED MENU (over 16? Nope….)

“Cocas” Pizzetas with Arugula, Tomato and Fresh Prawns $ 16

Pairing

“Horchata” Almond Milkshake

”Prego Pequeno” Grilled Beef Tenderloin Patty with Pommes Frites $ 15

Pairing

“Henry the Navigator” Lemon Grass Tea

Really over priced pizza or burger, except of course maybe for the Kerrisdale crowd. But, if you are anywhere near the age of 16 and raised in the manner suggested by the menu, would you not expect a far more interesting menu than a shrimp, tomato and spinach pizza with a glass of milk spiked w/ almond extract or a burger and fries with herbal tea? We share much more interesting and delicious cuisine with our young one, but not at that price. I'd be more impressed if they had posted mini portions of the regular menu's for the younger crowds. JMHO.

oh, and because of executing an internet search of Senova Manny's, I wonder, isn't there anybody who researches these sort of things before the name and relative information of a business is established? :hmmm:

He should not name his restaurant after his home town because...a pharmaceutical company used the word already?

Please elaborate. I fear I'm missing your point.

The prices aren't totally unreasonable, especially if he delivers the goods. The convenience of me having to drive for a mere 5 minutes as opposed to to 15-20 for a good (non-Asian) meal more than makes up for it.

In fact, if you go the tasting menu route, $30 for 3 courses is downright cheap (as is 5 for $50, relatively).

Yes $15 seems pricey for a child's hamburger, but you do get a drink with it and it is really only a couple of $ more than if you went to say White Spot - and probably quite a bit better. I agree that you could find cheaper and more "interesting", but then again you could order your child something off the tapas menu.

I suppose there's no use in defending anything that I haven't tried myself yet, but I will say that I am looking forward to it. And Paella Sunday has a nice ring to it.

Now I'm a total Plaeb when it comes to wine so please be gentle with the flaming on my terrible descriptions.

Enjoy...

^They have a 1998 Sassicaia on the wine list? Wow. (That's probably the best wine I've ever had too!) Thanks for the pictures...which was your favourite dish? The quail with the espresso-infused sauce?

The Quail was my favorite, the mussels were good but not mind blowing, the rest was ok. The wine really made my night though

Manny is still ironing out a lot of the teething pains of the new restaurant so I suggest people wait a few weeks before giving it a proper shakedown.

Now that we made quail AND creme brulee in class I have more to compare this food to.

I really question the choice of food in this location. I was in Coco Pazzo many times and the room was always full of pretty waspy folks. Yummy mummies, aged frat boys, sorority sisters and affluent westsiders. The menu suited them it seemed so I just don't see them going for Portuguese food? And I sure don't see their teenagers eating there. Salt Cod, sardines, boiled potatoes, spicy sausage…Perhaps downtown or on the eastside, but in the heart of Kerrisdale, not so sure? Good luck!
