Does anyone what is going on with Michel Klein's restaurant roundup column? For the last few weeks, it seems to be coming up every other week or so, as opposed to every Thursday. I would have thought vacation, or general Summer goofing-off, except that Inqlings seems to have suffered no such letup...

Hmmm. You could have asked me... I let the column go dark on Aug. 4 -- that's ONCE this summer before I took off yesterday (Aug. 25). And by gum, I'm taking off again Sept. 1. Yes, you could call it summertime goofing off; I'm lightening my workload on Mondays, when I normally write both Table Talk (for our early Food deadline) and the Tuesday INQlings column. If something major breaks restaurant-wise, I'll get it into INQlings. Thanks for caring...

How come no typical editorial announcement such as "Michael Klein is taking some time off from Table Talk" or "During the summer Michael Klein has a hard time getting his act together on Mondays."

Sheesh! Cut the poor guy a little slack! A day off here and there in the summertime won't make the restaurant gossip machine grind to a standstill. There's always something happening/opening/closing, etc. and we'll all find out about it eventually. Sometimes we even scoop the esteemed Mr. Klein ourselves, no?

Rarely

With maybe one exception, every time I've mentioned something to Michael he's known about it for ages.

Well, it happens to be the only substantial reason I buy the paper on Thursdays. I feel bereft when it isn't there. In any case, I intended to cast no aspersions on your character. You will get nothing but craven sycophancy from me, Sir!

THAT is brilliant, Holly! In the olden days, we were more explicit in explaining why columnists were off. Then someone got the paranoid assumption that burglars could read our "on vacation" boxes and case our houses. So they were changed to generic "So and so's column does not appear today." Sigh. Thanks for the kind words, folks...

Wow. I had always thought that newpaper pay being what it is, burglars would not be all that interested in a columnist's comings and goings. Then again maybe the Inquirer pays better than the City Paper used to.

I also figured that burglars read the Daily News; not the Inquirer.

I do miss those "on vacation boxes." Every once in a while there were some very funny explanations for a columnist's absence.
