Would like to dine Sat. evening in Englewood with 2 friends, but I'm not familiar with the restaurants in that area. I thought we could stop somewhere for a drink and then maybe go somewhere else and have dinner. Any recommendations would be appreciated. (It's a birthday celebration, so we'd like to have fun!)

90 Grand, Wild Ginger (BYO) or Smoke Chophouse. Does it have to be Englewood? America in Tenafly is very good. All of these are expensive. Would you prefer a moderate priced restaurant.

Saigon Republic is a good bet, as is Bennies and Wild Ginger.

For Saigon make sure you call that afternoon around 4PM and make a reservation, tell Joe Jason Perlow sent you.

Discussed extensively on Egullet, the hands-down winner in Englewood is Saigon Republic. Fabulous in every way. Very reasonable prices. Must have a reservation-- read this thread:

Saigon Republic

BYOB there, so bring a good bottle of wine. For a drink before, sidle up to the bar 2 blocks away fron Saigon at Moon Street, about 20 yards off Palisade Avenue. Moon Street, 11 North Dean Street. Nice atmosphere, they won't hassle you to eat there, you can just have a drink.

Other suggestions: Baumgart's Café (Chinese) or Bennies (Middle Eastern). Both BYO and casual. As for drinks I don't have any suggestions. Jason??

Go to America in Tenafly for drinks. They have an amazing bar there and they have entertainment on weekends.

America is a great place for dinner as well.

It's set we are definitely going to Saigon Republic. Thank you so much. (Do I have to wait until Sat. at 4 p.m. to make reservations or can I make them now??)

Can anyone suggest what the best wine is to pair with this food??? ( I have a hard time pairing this type of food and wine. )

Closed Mondays, and tomorrow is their first day back from vacation, I think; Recommend calling Wednesday. Speak to Joe. (And please report back to us on your dinner!)

Saigon is great, but TINY. It probably seats about 20 and is about 12' by 12'. Moon Street is about 1/4 mile walk from there and has some great mixed drinks, but only a so-so wine selection. Very good prices, too. America is a 5 minute drive and, although I haven't been yet, from what I hear I would go. I know dinner can get very expensive, but don't know if they gouge on drink prices, or if you care.

I echo Rosie's Riesling suggestion. A nice crisp Riesling pairs nicely with the somewhat spicy dishes. For one more Enlewood alternative for drinks, has anyone been to 90 Grand? It's up the street and around the corner, maybe 1/3 mile from Saigon. Kinda pricey restaurant, but I think they have a nice bar.

so many vietnamese dishes that i eat are light and herbal. i don't like reisling with those dishes. the sweetness overpowers them. i like something more crisp and acidic. unoaked sauvignon blanc from new zealand or bordeaux is what i usually reach for. especially those with herbal note. i save reisling for the spicy stuff, which, of course, can be found on a vietnamese menu.
