88 Cote Rotie

Recently, at my local Chamber Street Wines, I found a 1988 Emile Champet Cote Rotie, which (along with several other under-$20 bottles, all good) I bought for $35. Any idea why this bottle was so relatively inexpensive? My plan is to open it for a suitor, but I am curious as to what you think would go well in terms of food. Bacon, clearly, a must: perhaps in swiss chard as a side. But as a main...?

Actually mine does not look to be a La Viaillere, as that's printed nowhere on the label. And what the wineanorak wrote up referred to a 1998, not an 1988. I did however note the lightness of the wine in the bottle: its translucency and weight look more pinot noiresque than syrahnese.

But what on earth shall I serve with it: Nothing? A plate of chocolate-dipped bacon? Me, naked?

'88 was mostly very good. Parker rates Emile Champet as "good ***", so you have a bargain. Old Rhones are stunning.

I like your last suggestion of what to serve it with, but it might be too big a distraction from the wine.

If you are serving with a meal it calls for heavy meat or game - a good steak. I'd rather serve it on its own with good cheese, such as an aged cheddar or a stilton, and Bath Olivers maybe some celery.

While the chocolate sauce may go well with nakedness, chocolate is death to most wine (and tough on the sheets). Serve Tokay or an old oloroso with the chocoate sauce and some fine strawberries, for desert...By that stage of the meal you can decide whether your partner merits yourself naked as well...

The Champet was/is reasonably priced at Chambers Street Wines because we do our best to have very fair prices that would tempt us too if we happened to wander in. We like mature (properly stored, that is) wines, so we always try to have a few on hand. I haven't tasted the Champet, but a fellow Cote Rotie nut was very pleased with it. And much as I do love Cote Rotie, I'm not certain that there are too many that could stand up to some of the distractions mentioned... Magret de canard sounds good right about now, however.

Thanks for checking in Jamie. Did you just pick this wine up or have you had it in your hands for awhile. This is a certainly a mature wine and a great deal from a top rated vintage. How do you come up with such things?

I always thought Parker was a little hard on Champet because of the earthy style - which I happen to like. A little of that bacon fat along with the pepper.

Is it warm in here ? or is it just me ?

I , I mean it could just be me because I'm normally warm anyway, but , but this is a little different - not different weird - not that I'm saying I'm weird, because I'm not. Weird that is.

I'm still warm though - kind of a fuzzy sort of way. Not fuzzy like hairy - because I'm not, not that I'm hairless but no hair on my back - I think that good, it is, isn't it ???....... :laugh:

actually i'm feeling quite cool, but then again jamie inspired me. i'm half way thru his cava, which i must say is better than most proseccos i've had under ten bucks

It is after all fifteen years old. I like them when they start to gain delicacy and complexity as compared to the in-your-face Pamala Anderson style everybody seems to like these days.

Can you expand on your comments - color, fruit etc.?

color: dark lipstick liner smear; straight-backed dancer's tarnished red velvet dress, browning.

fruit: rotted november plum as it slides down a skateboard ramp in a park at dusk. plummy, but also d.o.a. :smile: imbalanced and sliding.

i guess all i like in wine is magic, which i did not find there.

to compensate - shoulda quelled expectations - i opened the other bottle i had handy, a Chateau Camplazens - was that named for you Craig? - La Clape reserve from Laguedoc. 1999. That I liked.
