Perhaps the vineyard was guarded by basenjis!

What? Basenjis? Either you are very clever or me not so smaaat.

Basenjis are a breed of dog native to the African continent. What makes them so unusual is that they CAN'T BARK!

Very clever indeed...

A basenji is an African dog that is often referred to as an African Barkless Dog. They do not have vocal chords so they would not be the best breed of dog to raise the alarm.

A barkless dog might be an appropriate mascot for a winery that was promoting the use of screwcaps.
