Mulled Wine

For Christmas, or just wintery days and nights near the fire.

  • 12 whole cloves
  • 2 nutmegs, cracked into pieces
  • 2 bottles, 750 mls of dry red wine
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • strips of zest from 2 oranges, 2 lemons
  • 3/4 c orange juice
  • 1/4 c lemon juice
  • 2 cinnamon sticks

Optional

  • 1 tsp cracked all spice
  • orange slices

Put the cloves and nutmegs (and all spice if using) into a cheesecloth and tie. In a crock pot, combine the wine, sugar, orange juice, lemon juice, zests, and cinnamon sticks. Add the clove and nutmeg bundle. Cook on low for 3 hours, then discard the cloves and nutmeg bundle. Keep on warm until ready to serve.
