Does anyone know of the Galileo Grill is going to be up and running again today?
-
Crystal City is very convenient to Alexandria (virtually right on the border). Mt. Vernon Ave has some places you might enjoy, such as RT's in Arlandria and Taqueria Poblano further up the avenue. I recommend reserviations at RT's.
-
Yikes.

Then I recommend the Irish Stew from Murphy's in old Town. I know, it's not DC.

Perhaps I'm wrong. But I doubt that Sabrett reserves their half-smoke production just for the DC area. I looked at the Sabrett's website and they appear to call them "pork/beef frankfurters." "Half-smoke" may just be what they call them in DC.

Since when is Ray's the Steaks open on Mondays?

How aobut the squash soup from Firefly?

The half-smokes you see on most of the roach coaches in downtown DC are made in New Jersey by Sabrett. To put it another way, the DC signature dish "half-smokes" are made in another part of the country. I'm reasonably sure that the half-smoke you get off of a dirt-water dog cart in DC will be the same as the one you get on a corner in New York. No, I don't think the half-smoke is a DC signature dish. If we are having this much trouble coming up with a dish that many can agree is DC's signature, then that tells you something right there.

I guess the next logical question is: "what is their next project going to look like?" (if one they have in mind).

I guess the ability to edit a message expires after a while. Here is a revised, udated list of attendees for the Restaurant Eve event next week. The fact that this same knucklehead has submitted his rant as a review that shows up on the Post's web page is outrageous. I hit the "request removal" button and we'll see if it goes away. If anyone is being arrogant here it is this guy who abused a priviledge and now screwed it up for the rest of his family. It amazes me sometime the lenghts people will go to prosecute a grduge.

Nah, it's the roasted chicken. ← Stay on message. Is there a "native" "signature" DC dish. My position is that there is no such thing. ← Channeling Rocks tonight are we To get back on topic, I agree, there is no native DC food. I think we should create a native DC meal: Palena roasted chicken with Firefly Parmesan Truffle fries. ← I think a "native" dish has to be something that the entire city can pretty much agree is the "signature." I doubt one restaurant's offering can qualify.

A decent showing this evening. At the bar, mdt, mnebergall, tdaschle, ldaschle, chef shogun and babka. edited to add: Is suspect that the daschles will be decamping soon. Edited to add: And, Babka, thanks for delivering the tasso ham.

There was a thread on city signature dishes under general food topics I think and the subject of DC's signature dish came up. The best they could come up with was half-smokes. Personally, I don't think DC has a signature dish in the way Cincinnati has chili and Philadelphia has cheese steaks.

How about Shelley's Back Room. Sofas, bar food (good wings). A couple of big screen TV's. It's on F St. between 13th and 14th.
-
I plan on leaving the office promptly at 5:30 and heading for the champagne fountain at Firefly. Anyone else?
-
You could probably relax at the bar at Firefly, below DuPont Circle. Nibble on some egg rolls or fried oysters.

Just to be clear, here is the portion of Wednesday's chat that I was referreing to: It also sounds like the "standing reservation" is in the name of some family member other than the one registering displeasure on Tom's chat.

Alexisg: I welcome you as well. The duck leg confit with lentils is a creation that will warm your parents spirits. I strongly recommend it. The bacon, egg and cheese salad is also one of my favorites. But, do not overlook the specials which will not be on the menu. They are always very good. Alas, the short ribs are no longer available. I would not recommend the pork belly for someone without an adventuresome palate, but it is spectacular. Do not be afraid to seek out the staff. If you are not sure and your server proves unhelpful (rare) ask to talk to either Todd or Tami. Todd will be able to give you some help with the wines. Mark edited to add: There are two tasting room menus, the 5-course and the 9-course.

Is anyone other than I taken aback by the assertion in yesterday's chat that there is "arrogance" going on at Ray's the Steaks? [second to the last posting on the chat] I find it astonishing that Michael Landrum would let someone have a "standing reservation." If Michael told them that he was doing them a great service by extending them that privilege, then he is right. Ray's is not a private club. My guess is that there is more going on here than meets the eye. I don't see Michael bringing up issues such as "private club" or mentioning that he does them a "great service" by allowing them to have a "standing reservation" unless they did something to abuse the privilege, like not showing up or showing up with something less than the full party. If someone has a standing reservation, they better show up with all their guests or else call ahead and let the staff know. Michael is a small businessman and show not have to put up with abuse of his good nature. I'm surprised that this posting made it through Toms' filter.

Just look for us at the bar. There are only about 6 or 8 seats. Half will be eGulleteers drinking sparkling wine.

I am organizing an eGullet event at Restaurant Eve (110 S. Pitt St., Old Town) for the 16th of November at 7:30. The plan is to partake of Chef Cathal's 5-course tasting menu with the "wine pairing." The freight, with wine, tax, gratuity and PayPal service fee should be around $135. Space is limited. PM me if you are interested. For those of you not familiar with Eve's tasting menu, click here for a sample. The menue changes frequently based on availability and will be completely different from that currenlty posted on the website. Chef Cathal only uses the freshest ingredients available.

I think you will find some good recipes in the PAPRIKA thread.
