  1. My favorite American foods at the moment are corn on the cob, and watermelon, adopted by us Canucks but quintessentially Yank IMO.
  2. Country Cook

    Sandwiches!

A BLT during tomato season with good side bacon Miracle Whip , fresh country white bread and a little bit of lettuce (it's really about the BT) and I am in heaven .
  3. Still no internet/mail order shopping though .
  4. I had no choice! it was my families fault. My sister taught me to make scrambled eggs (supervised) when I was four or five and I never looked back.
  5. My first sushi and sashimi was in a Japanese restaurant in the Old Strathcona area of Edmonton. It was early evening in the summer of 1999 and I decided to try something new so I walked into the resto and ordered some kind of sashimi/sushi combo plate. I loved the wasabi and was aware of it's potency but I didn't know what the pink pickled ginger was on my plate. Thinking the pickled ginger was some sore of sashimi I put the whole thing in my mouth. Good thing the restaurant was empty having just opened because I rather inelegantly spit it out (with no witnesses). I have leaned alot since then.
  6. Cilantro, liver as a kid because my Mom cooked it to death, fennel and tarragon, can't think of much else. The more I try them the more I like them.
  7. San Pelligrino blood orange is the best I have tried. All I can get is aranciatta out hear (not as good).
  8. My peas as usual did little to nothing (sigh) but there's always next year. ←
  9. [ I can agree with everything else you said, but the salt thing? Who died and left you Ruler of the Salt Shaker? ←
  10. I hope this means a return to proper hand washing stations and no more gloves. Maybe the disposable glove fad will be over.
  11. I just lost one of these camping but will definetly get another for $26 cdn at my local surplus store. You can see one at: http://www.quickspice.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart...e-portablestove
  12. And while in Scandinavia: viili ((the Finnish name) or filmjölk (in Swedish). This is a dairy product made in a similar way to yogurt. HOWEVER, in taste and texture it's like when you try to make yogurt yourself at home. You know how occasionally it just doesn't work (maybe this is just me ) and you have this nasty runny yet stringy texture... Viili was my mothers favorite at the Hoito Resteraunt in Thunder Bay, Ont,. Can. it's quite good once you get over the stringy texture. Scalloped potatoes and beet and carrot salad flavored with salt herring was hard to get used to as a kid, I'm still not a fan of the potatoes.
  13. It's not showing off it's educational . I made 80 bbq potatoes on the weekend for our annual trapshoot. peel, chop in half, add slice of onion, season, wrap in foil, add butter and tbsp of water, cook on bbq till done, they went over great! Well worth the 3.5 hours of preparation.
  14. Mine tastes like worchestershire sauce , not sure what brand, they say it goes good with western and aisian dishes.
  15. O-kay I'm finally going to admit it. I like beer and tomato juice (with the tomato juice in the bottom of the glass) with a dash of fish sauce , I've only admitted this to a few members of my family so far, this is so embarrasing. I've tried to quit but those 40 ounce bottles of $1.98 fish sauce keep dragging me back .
  16. Reindeer is great. I love smoked and sliced Reindeer heart. Never get it often though, don't live close to Lapland, live in southern Sweden, and from here it's closer to Milan than Lapland is. The most "exotic" thing I've ever eaten must be grilled Opossum in Australia, and damn, it didn't taste good at all. Tasted dirt. ← I had it at the revolving tower restaurant in Tampere, Finland (in 1977). Still a ways from southern Sweden though.
  17. IMHO there is no substitute for Liptons onion soup mix .
  18. The men's pocky has the best chocolate flavor I've tried so far I really liked the green tea mousse which I tried for the first time also.
  19. If only our office had rotating beer , all we have is rotating salad dressing from office lunches.
  20. Granvile Island English Pale Ale. Good body but I wish it were stronger.
  21. Two examples of arbitrary manners amuse me: 1. Americans who cut a piece of meat, then lay down the knife and transfer the fork to the right hand. Holding the knife and fork in the correct manner was one of my dad's bugaboos when I was growing up. We were not, under any circumstances, allowed to transfer cutlery from hand to hand! ← Being a leftie I just switch right hand for fork and left for knife, the rest of the world is backwards .
  22. Yes, also barley, that is to grow the cows for the Alexis Creek (C1) Ranch.
  23. Good for you! Wee need more shameless people in this world .
  24. Tell me about it... I made the mistake of deciding to go shopping at the Asian Food Center the day before Chinese/Korean/Vietnamese New Year, and although it was very crowded, everyone was extremely polite and it was cool to see entire families collectively shopping & hauling multiple carts groaning with good stuff up to the checkout (great time to take advantage of sales, esp. on cookware/servingware). ← Last week I went to my first large Asian supermarket, after the chaos and noise of the parking lot I didn't know what to expect inside but inside was completly different, calm music, polite shoppers and staff, no prepackaged fresh meat, live shrimp, crabs, fish, etc., all glass items wrapped in paper, one of the most enjoyable shopping experiences in my life.
