A warm peach shortcake using a buttermilk biscuit base sided by a generous serving of butter pecan gelato would work for this southern boy. Being in Louisville, why not work some red into the menu? How about an updated Red Velvet cake? Add some peanut butter chips, swirl in a little kirsch, and frost it with mascarpone. And bake it in a Gugelhupf mold instead of the traditional cake pan.

Nutritional Yeast Here's a good link that has both nutritional and brewer's yeasts on it.

DON'T use brewer's yeast, that stuff is bitter. Now nutritional yeast on popcorn or macaroni is quite good. It tastes almost exactly like cheese.

I don't get Tex-Mex. I live in Texas, I love Texas, but I just cannot understand the thinking behind Tex-Mex food. Fajitas I understand. And I eat. And I like. But what's with all the goopy yellow cheese on EVERYTHING else? I love cheese, but I do believe there is such a thing as overkill. And Chili Con Queso? Why? It was good enough already. Japenese; don't get it. Rice, good. Sticky rice, good. Raw fish, bad. Noodles, good. Tofu, bad.

We get our turkey from Alexander Family Farm in Del Valle, Texas. It is more expensive than other turkeys, but it's worth it for the few times a year when you want something really special. Here's a link: Turkey

A perfectly cooked, unseasoned turkey is FAR more enjoyable than a perfectly cooked, unseasoned chicken IMO. Turkey has more natural flavor than chicken does. Chicken meat needs help to elevate it to the level of turkey meat.

Turkey... Ham... Beef stew... Chicken pot pie... Apple pie... Pecan pie.. Pumpkin pie.

Crushed fritos, pickle spear and FRench's mustard wrapped in a flour tortilla; my brother eats this as a midday snack a few times a week.

You can't get a TRULY RED Velvet Cake if you substitute for the food coloring. I've tried several times. It doesn't taste the same either.

Three Brothers Bakery is still here and still putting out excellent bagels.

Thanks for the report on Rio Ranch, Fifi. Sounds interesting. I've been for their brunch twice and can say that it was quite good. Del Grande is a very knowledgeable owner and chef and it appears he has staffed this place quite well.

If you must get biscuits and gravy from a chain restaurant, Shoney's is the place to go. No one does it better.

Bacon. And blueberry muffins. And a big honkin' milkshake with real lots of real whipped cream and sprinkles on top. Hushpuppies. Bread and butter. And more bacon.

That yeast that's used on popcorn and in smoothies isn't brewer's yeast, it's nutritional yeast. Two Totally different things.

Anyone else who doesn't care for dark chocolate?
KAPDADDY replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
You're no freak. I can't stand dark chocolates either. In fact I find myself disliking chocolate more and more as I get older. Nothing is better than a creamy, smooth milk chocolate in my opinion. -
Pepperidge Farm Chessmen and Doublestuff Oreos. Sure wish I could find a good lemon or orange flavored cookie.

Fifi, Morning's has three locations. Not exactly sure where you live, but the closest to you would probably be the one over near Johnson Space Center and UH-Clear Lake on Bay Area Blvd(2402). The other two are located in La Porte and Deer Park. I've only had the chance to sample their kolaches once because they're all so far away from me, but they were easily the best kolaches I've had so far, especially the cream cheese. I'll admit, I'm a bigger fan of the meat filled kolaches than I am the fruit or cheese variety, but those cheese kolaches were darn good. The bread was probably my favorite part of the kolaches. Light, sweet, fresh, and most important to me, not overly greasy. I hate kolaches that are so greasy the bread turns to mush. They don't skimp on the fillings either. Good bread to filling ratio, was able to get a good taste of both in every bite. Good size. Not big, but not small either. If you need a good kolache and are in the area, Morning's is the place to go.

Where is the Czech Stop located? I've never heard of it. BTW, for you Houston Kolache lovers, Morning's Kolaches are at the top of my list right now. Old Towne Kolaches are a distant second.

I've heard good things about Vanille Patisserie in Chicago. Has anyone had the chance to visit their shop yet?

The only reason I specified low alcohol wines is because I'm not sure how well my body will be able to deal with the different levels. I was born with a rare nervous disorder that effects my entire body including my metabolism. Given my condition, I need to get started as slowly as possible. I'd like to be able to enjoy a glass or two without ending up totally hammered. As for location, I live in Houston. There's a Spec's and a Central Market nearby. There may be some other places, but those are the only two I can think of right now. Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

I really like the "Clone of A Cinnabon" recipe. Just do a Google search and you should get a ton of hits to choose from.

I'd like to find a good, tasty, low alcohol wine to ease my way into the wine world. I do not drink at all so have no idea where to start looking. I've had a few wine coolers over the years and enjoyed those but don't know if they're even worth discussing. Anyone have any suggestions?
