  1. Restaurant is on Kinderkamack Road.
  2. There's a new place one the border of Oradell and Emerson, in Emerson. Used to be Nola's(Italian). The name is not visible from the street but it hase a sign on the side of the building that says 'Thai". Just past the Dairy Queen heading from Oradell to Emerson, across from the retirement home. Believe the name is Pimman. Have been there twice. First time got Tom Yung Kha was a great soup with coconut milk, mushrooms, shrimp, lemongrass and other items. Next time I got it spicy and it ripped the tarpaper off the roof it was so hot. Also tried their spicy wide noodle dish quite similar to Chinese chow fun and their mussels in broth which I thought was good. We also had the papaya salad which my friend did not care like as much as others he had had elsewhere. Pad Thai was good. Has a rather extensive menu including whole fish and frogs legs and on the whole seems to be doing a credible job; it had a whole lot of business last Friday night. Also has lunch specials for around 6 or 7 dollars including entree, spring roll and rice. Worth some exploration. I've been to Wondees, Bangkok Thai, Kailash in Ridgewood. Good experiences.

  4. For my July 4 dinner, I tried making ribs really for the first time. Inspired by my neighbor and his Kamado. Did a salt and pepper rub then baked them for two hours in foil at 325. Let sit for about 10 minutes in the oven with it turned off. Then Let sit in a cherry cola glaze. Cherry cola cooked down and mixed with cherry preserves, dijon mustard with horse radish, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar. Then grill about 5 minutes turning and recoating midway. Came out really nice. Accompanied with homemade lemonade, mashed potatoes, corn and homemade blueberry pie. We later went to the Fireworks with friends and brought the lemonade and the rest of the pie and the comments were "best pie they ever ate" . That looking up at the show-that's a fourth of July just the way Johm Adams said we should celebrate it. Food, fireworks and friends. I see that you usually seem to be slow cooking for longer? also I probably cooked it with the membrane(me being a naive virgin). Should you take it off? What's the difference?
  5. Would agree with Rachel. I mentioned the things I thought were of note at Kuma. Other stuff is good but perhaps not noteworthy. Lotus Cafe has more stuff and greater subtlety in their sauces.
  6. Kuma is actually a Chinese restaurant. It's run by chinese people and the people in their kitchen are all chinese. I think they have the sushi element simply to try to build more customers (they also have a couple of things like seaweed salad). But their basic orientation if Chinese; why their name is Kuma beats heck out of me.

  8. I haven't been to China 46 in a long time sounds like it might be worth taking a trip back based upon all the love here. Other places worthy of mention- Lotus Cafe- (in the Pathmark shopping center in North Hackensack-where the Brazilian churrascaria is) Truly fine restaurant, subtle sauces, Taiwan style cooking. Of note: Ta Loo Mein soup(pork, shrimp, noodles, tofu-gigantic bowl) Lotus Delight (pork beancurd, bean thread noodles egg) wonderful l Paradise Chicken(white chiken with leeks in an abalone sauce) Seafood fried dumplings Shrimp in white wine sauce "To kill for"- steak and scallop special(the steak is breaded cooked on a sizzling platter in a great sauce and just is a great piece of meat). Kuma House- Despite the name run by Chinese people. Serves pretty nice sushi too Worthwile dishes- Kuma House fried rice-a Chinese person's fried rice-none of this soy sauced crap.   9. Gee Tommy, I can understand your angst. Have spent a lot of time in the mountains of France chomping down some fine duck leg confit. Used to stay in a place right next to a store that, seemed to me only sold confit. Or perhaps that's all my eyes saw.
  10. I'm suprised that you had bad service at Peking Duck House Tommy. Always thought that was one of their strengths. Of course sometimes comparing is a little apples and oranges. It has a different style than China 46. I mentioned the Beggar's Chicken dish- baked in clay and broken open at your table. Kind of neat .

  13. Live in Oradell up the road from the Diner. Walked past it without going in for about 25 years. Was perhaps a little scared. Got enticed in one day by one of the older gentlemen who used to frequent the place and discovered really nice diner style breakfasts(bacon good then too, and nicely cooked eggs). Burger was a revelation- I think it was $2.50 for a nice juicy thing with just a primo bun-really worth it. Good liverwurst too again inexpensive. Heard the ham had been good. Haven't been in the new incarnation yet.
  14. Don't know if you ever got to Baumgart's, Rosie. A little lowdown on it- Have been there with friends several times-their favorite. Kind of an interesting mix-Jewish diner/Chinese restaurant. Never really had anything bad but maybe not the place to go for real Chinese food. The allure is in the mix-to get a duckling spring roll and an egg cream is unique.
  15. It is fried bean curd skin Rachel. I ate at China 46 some time ago;my recollection was the people and the food were great- I remember the salt and pepper shrimp. But haven't been there in some time.

  17. Can't believe no one on this line for so long on the topic of Chinese restaurants-one of my passions in life. Been to virtually everything of note in Northern Jersey. Here's some opinion- 1. Silver Pond- Been there for dim sum innumerable Saturday afternoons, have taken others there. Dim sum is top notch; good variety, fresh. Most notewothy items: har gow(shrimp dumpling), pai gwot(steamed little spareribs), low yoke(beef ball). Also chive dumpling, seen joke goon(beancurd skin roll wrapped around meat)(way good). My current personal fave - fried roll stuffed with shrimp and cilantro( not sure of the cantonese name for it). Service is good, fish are not dead. Have tried dinner items although experience is primarily dim sum. Good (albeit not exotic)dinner items: salt and pepper shrimp, any of the cantonese style chow mein(fried noodle dishes)(better in restaurant than take out), and their multi item fried rice(which in cantonese style is white and not dark ). Of their more exotic items, have also recently had a nice shark's fin soup item. In relation to places in New York for dim sum this stands up pretty well although I would rate Sweet and Tart better because it's fresher and has a greater ecletic selection as well as bonzer main dish kind of items. Certainly more convenient for those in North Jersey. 2.Peking Duck House- have been eating here for the last fifteen years- know everyone by name. Have had many family celebrations here and staff has gone all out. Good place to take a bunch of people. Staff is very friendly-owner generally checks with everyone on how they are enjoying the meal. Best thing is obviously the Peking duck and can get the 2 or 3 course duck deal (although I don't care much for the soup part) Everything they make is solid(except perhaps for the normal soups on the menu which seem not to have a particularly flavorful broth base.) Sundays and holidays have buffet which is good and plentiful(albeit not exotic generally). Peking duck and champagne are generally added on holidays along with dim sum. Very good cold table with vegetarian mock meats and cold sesame noodles Good desert table including the chocolate cake of which Jason spoke. Will cook any requested item for a banquet. Great items: Seafood soup served in a wintermelon, squirrel fish(whole fish with a sweet and sour sauce and pignoli nuts). On the menu good dishes: wine bibbing chicken, beggars chicken(have to order in advance). Have to get off- more in a bit.
