I'm doing a little chicken and cranberries in the crock pot as we speak. Maybe this weekend will be tortilla soup! Next week might be the guiness beef pot pie I saw in Gourmet mag last month?

I haven't made it by to Aries yet but it made me wonder why Houston is really lacking in the "special" Restaurant list. I have always thought Cafe Annie to be way overrated. Marks certainly has its faults, maybe its better now but I have had a couple great meals at marks and some very dissapointing meals on other occasions. Bank is ok but its really not special. Tony's is special but somethimes the food really misses. Chez Nous underwhelms me. Why don't we have a great restaurant?!

I miss swensons. One of my memories is after winning a big ballgame my family all went to swenson's to celebrate. I wasn't feeling good and managed to throw up all over the place. I still feel sorry for whoever cleaned that up.

" That mexican deli place on w alabama that served the best migas and chili rellenos in town. What was the name of that place?" Cortez Deli!
-
Another must eat is the chicken and waffles at the Breakfast Klub on Travis. The chicken is 6 wings that are dipped in a buffalo wing style sauce the breaded and fried. Its like an inside out wing. The waffle is very good as well. This place is well run and very eclectic. It gets very busy on saturdays. And believe its only open from 6a to 2p?

Two more come to mind: Cinco Robles on Feagan was a great little mexican joint that was somehow talked into opening a restaurant on the second floor of what is now a Men's Warehouse on W Gray. The place they opened was decorated on an art deco motiffe and signaled the quick end of the restaurant. That mexican deli place on w alabama that served the best migas and chili rellenos in town. What was the name of that place?

Heres a link to the Bank menu. As I said, I felt fairly limited on the meat side. Its really nitpickin. Its a very good restaurant. http://www.hotelicon.com/dinner.pdf

Droubi's is another place I crave. I just don't get there much. Best Gyro meat in town. Great Hummus etc. What about the Burgers at Christians Tailgate on Washington and I 10? What a great burger!

I had dinner the other night at Bank and have to say that it was pretty good. Started off with salmon slices with a chile tapioca in a cocunut broth. Very good dish but probably second to the ribbons of tuna served over avacado slices with a sesame oil based sauce. Heavenly dish really. The only thing I really didn't like about the menu was the fairly uninteresting meat portion of the menu. I was hoping for some braised short bibs or something similar but had to settle for some very good lamb chops. I know its a petty complaint but the other meat choices were duck (I'm convinced only asian restaurants no how to cook duck properly) and 3 steaks. I'm sure the steaks are good but I would think if one really wanted steak they could head down to Vic and Anthony's for that? On the other hand the seafood side of the menu looked really good. My wife had the braised salmon and it was close to perfect. I can't remember much about it, but remember enough to say that it was a very good dish.

Hands down Villa Arcos on Navigation just east of Downtown. I always get the bacon super which is bacon, egg, potato, bean and cheese. The carne Guisada is also very good. Taqueria Laredo on Washington has very good breakfast tacos as well.

In Stafford there was a little place called Maison D Glasse that had the best french onion soup and great hamburgers. Just down the street was a bbq joint that served incredible que. What about the original Ousies? It was much different that it is now. What about some of the old places on the ship channel? think they are all closed now.

Strwberry Patch. That's funny, my dad used to co own the place before it was the SP. I was very young but it was a pizza place with live music. What about Primos for the best fajitas I have ever had. It was close to Damians. Angelos on south main, its where I had my vry first oyster because I was told it would grow hair on my chest. Nicks Ice cream for incredible Tre Sclini, a choc ice cream.

Personally, I think people looking for good food should pass it up, not just people looking for latest and greatest. For an out of towner it would probably end up being a dissapointing meal. And in Houston good meals are what we are about. Maybe a drink and a chile con queso? For historical mexican I would send people to the original Ninfa's, pretty much where the fajita was born as we know it. And mind altering margaritas.

"Where is Lopez?" Its on Wilcrest just north of the sw freeway near sugar land.

Maybe you could call Quattro in the 4 seasons and see if you can get a private dinning room. I'm sure they would prefer to have a wine drinking group in the "wine" room but if I remember they have a couple private/semi private rooms. As a bonus you will get GREAT food at the four seasons along with great service.

I hate to break up the love fest but I can't imagine directing any out of towner to Felix's. From what I can surmise Felix is more about nostalga/feelings, than great food. I have a restaurant that is similar to Felix's, Lopez (I believe mr lopez worked for Felix's for years) and when I take someone there sometimes it doesn't really translate. The food's good but never great (lopez is great to me though). Please don't pass up a place like Cafe Montrose and eat at Felix, you will miss out on much better food.

Kim Son Dim sum on weekends. Lopez's nachos especiales. I just love em, been eating them for 20+ years. Santong Snacks beef noodle soup, especially during the winter time but summer is ok too. Great dumplings as well. Sinh Sinh for fresh seafood and bbq duck. Just to add a couple more to my list.

The original Givrals for Banh Mi. Cali Sandwich for vermicilli with pork and eggroll. Taqueria La Flor for tacos and outrageuosly hot green sauce with chips. Tampico for grilled snapper platter. Villa Arcos for breakfast tacos.
-
This would probably be a question to ask in a different thread since the thread is about Haute Cousine. That being said here it goes: Miss Saigon in the Village area serves up vietnamese food in a little more stylish way then say Cali or Mai's. The vermicilla with pork and egg rolls is great. So are the sandwiches. Cafe Rebelais also in the village area serves excellent french bistro fare at a great price. Shiva, also in the Village, has very good Indian Food.

They are short fat red links.

I was in Guys Meat Market getting myself a smoked cheeseburger and chili cheese fritos and noticed a big pile of hot links (uncooked) for sale.

Are you sure its Tealas? Because I think Tila's are much better. In fact they are 1 and picos is 2.

Stubbs was reincarnated some time ago after originally closing. It came back more as a live music place. As for food some of my favorites were Spanky's across from Jones Stadium for the best and biggest fried cheese anywhere. It is the only place I will get fried cheese and that's once in a blue moon since I have only been to Lubbock 2 times in the last 10 years. The burgers are good. Cho Chai on 19th has very good thai food in a very small hole in the wall type joint. I always got either the gar yang(I think, I always asked for green chicken) or the exceptional pad thai they have. Josies Mex (my favorite is on univ) is one of my alltime favorite mex places. The breakfast's are alays good. and for some reason the chips and salsa are addictive. My guess is just about anything is good. I also remember eating a lot of carne guisada tacos with sour cream. If Mesquites is still around I would say that's very Lubbock. Look it up. There is a new oplace in/near the cultural center I believe at 19th just off University that is supposed to have very good food. From what I've heard Its owned by the people that owned Grapevine bar/cafe some years ago and there food was very good.

and she asked me even though I've never been. So I am here looking for help from you guys. My SIL is a very smart soon to be completing her residency in anesthesiology. She is very fit, broke off her ass(because of school) likes great food, not a big drinker. She wants to know where to go for good meals while in Paris. She is interested in doing a very nice place or two as well as some great bistro's that may or may not be off the beaten track. Can anyone help me help her?

Don't know about flirty service but Picasso would be my pick.
