  1. Just clicked on the link to the website--it looks like someone inserted the new date at the top, but underneath that it says: "The Washington, DC Convention and Tourism Corporation and the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington are proud to present the fourth Washington, DC Restaurant Week from January 12 - 18, 2004 " And if you look at the list, BeDuCi is shown as participating...on another thread, someone mentioned that they had closed, and that SBC Cafe would be taking over that space. I wonder how current the rest of the list is?
  2. FYI, I had good chopped liver at Kuna--chopped liver on crostini, thickly spread. Not enough onions in it to rival my grandma's, but still good stuff. It's not DC and you have to cross into Monkey County, but believe it or not, Giant has some pretty good Chopped Liver! (Not all stores have it, and whenever I've had a hankering lately it's been sold out)
  3. Actually I'd like to see Fresca reformulated with Splenda. I tried C2 this weekend as well, and I concur...I've noticed, actually, that Splenda DOES have a diet aftertaste, albeit not as offensive to me as Nutrasweet. And, even though I don't like Nutrasweet, I actually like Diet coke with Lime (but not regular or with lemon) and I will drink Fresca on occasion. But I would definitely root for a reformulated Fresca with Splenda! (I even liked it better made with saccharin--I grew accustomed to saccharin, but never to Nutrasweet, bleechh!) My take on the C2--I actually like the stuff. Even though it tastes as if someone took half a can of diet coke, and mixed it with half a can of regular. I must clarify that: 1) I am a very brittle type 1 diabetic for over 33 yrs, and have had my share of diet sodas. 2) I am a classic coke lover 3) I only get to drink Coke when my blood sugar is very low (and then I can't even drink the whole can or else my sugar will go way off in the other direction) 4) My husband hates it when I steal a sip from his coke--Now I can have my own! This weekend I drank a bottle of C2 when my sugar dropped rather low. It was nice to be able to drink half the bottle and not have my sugar going off the deep-end in the other direction! (I shared with my husband, and he even thought it was tolerable) And it was refreshing, unlike diet sodas, which I find just make me thirsty. So I vote yes on the C2, and will definitely purchase it so it does not go the way of "new" coke.

    Pho

So all this talk of Pho--I just had to have it for lunch today! There's a place on L street between 19th and 20th called Asian Bistro Pho and Grill. Used to be Saigon Cafe, I think, but they changed owners. Maybe it's not the "best" in the area, but there is a severe lack of places downtown (that I know of, anyway) to get Pho. And it sure hit the spot for me--
  5. I drive Georgia Ave every day and looked this morning to see where Jackie's will be located. They have a sign on the building announcing "Jackie's" coming soon. It is just before the underpass on the left if you are heading south on GA Ave. (Sligo Ave) Next block after the fire station. Seems to be a bit out of the way...very close to Mayorga's, who also has a lounge. Since I haven't had the opportunity to get to Mayorga's yet, I don't know if they serve alcohol. Maybe Jackie's will bring more traffic into that part of town? I also noticed it looks as if the fire station is moving across the street to the area currently under construction where the old train depot is--any word on what will take over that building? Now that would have been a neat spot for a restaurant! I'll keep an eye open as well for the actual opening--I would love to "join" Malawry and the JPW's in the first available table as well, if I may be so bold!
  6. I didn't realize there was a Daruma in Bethesda--does anyone know if this is the same place that is in the Rockville strip mall, across from the Best Buy? My husband and I love to go here for their very authentic noodles. They used to run a market next door as well--this place has tables along with a counterbar, albeit small. (As there's no place to get Saimin in this area, my husband goes for the ramen.) I forgot about Aji Nippon--I had been told about it years ago...I'm glad to hear they are still around, and will have to try to get out there soon! I've always searched for a Nabeyaki Udon to be even half as good as what you get on the west coast--Hillvalley, would you say theirs is the best in DC?
  7. Congratulations! I'm so glad you were able to post the pics--the Post picture does not do your work justice. Well deserved accolades to both of you.
  8. Stars and Stripes has a pretty darn good burger...lots of tv screens, if there's a sport's event going on.
  9. Thank you--it looks great! I'm not sure I'll be able to get to try it this weekend, but if I do, I'll definitely report back on my efforts. I think my husband would really go for the 'French Toast' effect. (especially since it takes longer to bake in humid weather-you'd think this was August in DC, and it's only June)
  10. Keep in mind you went on Valentine's Day--not the best day to judge a restaurant, IMO. And 6 yrs ago is an awfully long time--even for me! (I harbored a grudge against Fuddruckers in my youth and boycotted them for a long time...only went back for a "family" event.) Not the same as Sea Catch, I admit, but still....
  11. I think I remember Sietsema referring to this place, on one of his chats. Am I day- dreaming, or does anyone else recall?
  12. Good for us T1's too! Do you have a recipe to share?
  13. Beegew, the study was proven to help Type 2 Diabetics, not Type I, unfortunately. (Type I is also know as Juvenile Diabletes, in case anyone did not know) The two diseases are less alike then their names would suggest. But, on the other hand, what would it hurt to add a tasty substance like cinnamon to the diet? Especially when there's Splenda to mix with it!
  14. Ditto the Greek Deli-- while it is more of a hike, you can phone in your order and not have to spend your entire lunch waiting in line to pick it up. They have a few tables outside, and then you can walk-off the extra calories on the return trip! Great specials, too, like Coq au Vin, (sp?) and Stuffed Cabbage, and yes, that moussaka....
  15. I've only been to Sea Catch twice, both times for lunch, and it has been awhile at that. However, based on both those times, I would definitely recommend it for location, and for the food.
  16. You do the work, I'll pass along the names and numbers to as many folk as I can find!

    Cosi

    ...and salads made-to-order.
  18. Monica, I'd like to add my thanks as well. The food was delicious (the photos look great!) and meeting new people was a treat for me as well. It would not have been nearly as enjoyable but for the graciousness of Chef Sudhir and his wife. Truly a wonderful evening, even though I'm getting full again just looking at the photos!
  19. The map is great--I was in the process of looking it up myself when I saw your message--I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!
  20. Not having been before, where exactly is the restaurant located--as in what is nearby? Thanks!
  21. Our computer crashed and I've been without for a few days! The latest--2 of the 4 will be Kayaking in WVA so won't be back in time, although they tried really hard to see if they could make it. The other 2 said no, due to the time needed for a response...I'll check back with you to see if any space is left, if anything changes. I was also hoping I still might sway my husband into coming along...I do understand if the spots fill up before he makes up his mind, though! I guess I'll be on my own...
  22. I haven't been to the "new" DC location, but I work half a block form the former site, and we really missed it when they had not yet opened. My entire office was addicted to the Red Curry, (we even had it delivered from Arlington when they were between locations) and several people said it is the best they ever had. I can't comment on the sushi since I never ate it there--there are several other places to get sushi in this neck of the woods, and I couldn't pass up the Red Curry whenever we were eating there!
  23. I emailed you directly as well, but wanted to get to you as soon as possible to let you know that I will definitely be there! I'm still waiting to hear from my office- mates on whether they will be coming as well, and I'm told they'll know definitely by tomorrow. I'm looking forward to meeting you--and other members of egullet!
  24. Sorry to hear of your hospitializaton after the Iron Chef show... Lovely to meet you, so to speak! Love the show...I enjoy watching the classics, but have never been one to learn from books. Your shows have been great for those of us who learn better from different methods, and your humor sure helps me to remember! But I'm getting off topic here.... What I'd like to know is if you're encountering more people with food allergies these days, and to more items than in the past? I had been aware of the prevalence of peanut and lactose allergies, but since I was diagnosed a few years ago with many, many food allergies, I've noticed I am encountering more and more people allergic to things I never would have suspected. And more and more people with other auto-immune conditions as well. You mentioned the cause of your illness to be a migraine in your blog on your website, but mentioned a possible food allergy in this forum. Do you have any known allergies to food; How do/would you adapt your recipes; and have you also noticed this trend? (maybe its all the pesticides and chemicals we've eaten over the years...in addition to the HFCS!) Thanks! squids

    Pho

Just had to reply, since that's quite a generalization. Never? I disagree-- An Loi (which used to be located in Wheaton Plaza before the place was turned upside-down with construction) has a very rich broth--quite tasty. My in-laws would go there quite frequently, and we had many family events there. They are now located in Columbia, MD which is a bit of a hike, but then so is NOVA for that matter...but I'll keep that place in mind near Micro Center the next time I'm out that way.
