    Pho

There used to be a Vietnamese restaurant on Georgia, a block north of University (almost directly across from the old Roy Rogers). Sadly, it was really short-lived (I think it turned over in just a few months). Too bad, because it was also really pretty good. Bring to me a bucket! Of pho! ← I'm at home sick today, and now all I want is Pho-- Unless someone can think of a place that delivers.... Eunny, there were two Roy Rogers in Wheaton--the one on Georgia Ave, and the one that was IN Wheaton Plaza. That one, for those who reeaally remember old Wheaton, was where Farrell's used to be...("Farrells is fabulous fun for everone!") Anyway, there is, I believe, still the one on University at Amherst that iamthestretch was referring to...will have to go check it out and report back. The old Roy's on Georgia converted to a Danny's recently, and now is in a state of deconstruction...for... who knows what will come next.
  2. Welcome tripewriter! (An aside--we say that all the time, and now I know how to spell it!--(we say, phonetically, eat-da docky mas)

    Pho

[Was An Loi the pho shop across University Blvd. from Dusit and Matamoros? If so, grrrrr, that was a good spot. If not, there is still somewhere to get pho in Wheaton, hooray! ←

    Pho

Eunny, we've not tried that one yet, but will definitely look for it the next time we're in Columbia...Have you been to An Loi? We frequently went there before they got pushed out of Wheaton due to the "expansion." Have only been there once or twice since they've been in Columbia, but we still enjoy the service and the pho. I believe it is also on Snowden River Pkwy, but I could very well be mistaken, since Columbia is like a maze to me. Hard to believe with all the "ethnic" restaurants in Wheaton, that there is no place to get Pho--it's a good thing I have a sister who lives in Columbia!
  5. I just noticed these Petits Fours in the Lands End catalog I received yesterday. They are also offered in a sugar free version.
  6. redfox, I had emailed the restaurant in regards to the menu, and this was included in their reply... " I can say that we have made it a point to have both vegetarian and vegan (no dairy) selections" EllenH, you did a great job describing the atmosphere! The place definitley has a great vibe and am looking forward to going back. We had a very enjoyable time with edemuth and the JPW's (inlcuding peanut!) and it most definitely shows promise. I must add that even though JPW may have thought the salad uninspired, I was happy to see that it wasn't your standard iceberg or baby green mix like you get from the grocery. And, that olive oil and vinegar was like no other I've experienced in a restaurant before. Hopefully, they will keep paying attention to the "little" details as they work out their kinks.
  7. ditto that...except I've got 1 1/2 hours to go and I'm runniing on very little sleep. I do hope you'll be able to make it--I spoke with the chef, and the menu sounds wonderful!
  8. Joe, 7:00 it is, and hopefully even a little sooner. While I'd welcome the opportunity to meet more egulleters, I can't foresee getting there much earlier since I don't get off work until 6pm. (the infamous Al_Dente and possibly Jenny Uptown--and anyone else who wants to come by!)
  9. depending on traffic, 7-7:15-ish is probably the earliest we could make it. JPW had mentioned possibly dinner? Or we could just do drinks and snacks at the bar. But it sounds like either way, we may not get to meet up with you since you have other plans. Al Dente had mentioned stopping in after work for a drink--maybe the two of you could get there early and warm up the bar for us later arrivals!
  10. I called this evening and found out they were open the past 2 nights for reservations only, so tonite is their first "real" opening night. Drinks and/or dinner--how's it looking for tomorrow evening? JPW? Malawry? Al Dente?
  11. Since it doesn't quite look like it will be "en masse" at this point, it would be nice to have an egullet presence on the first day of their soft opening (if that is the case, as per iamthestretch's posting.) If you could join us...although I understand entirely if you'd rather not...we promise not to keep you out too late! JPW, Mr. Squids and I are definitely planning on stopping on our way home from work!
  12. A guinnee on tap sounds reeeaal good for Friday! If we can swing by on the way home from work, it wouldn't be until 7:15-7:30 ish. Would that be too late to meet up?
  13. I've been avoiding the computer (and many days of egullet) as we are getting ready to sell our house. Open house is today (Sunday) so we've been up all day cleaning and making it look nice. I must admit, it will be very hard to give up our wonderful gourmet kitchen, but as the house we are buying is an original 1957 kitchen, we at least will have the opportunity to re-create it. Although I'm not looking forward to the hassle, I am hoping to get out to eat at more places...like Jackie's, when it opens, and hopefully a stop at Palena on the way home from work sometime. (As it stands right now, I don't think I've had a "real" meal in over a week--maybe even two!)
  14. Thanks for the update, JPW! We're counting down the days.... (and I agree about the website design)
  15. I ran in at 1:00 and got the last of the grill for Mr. Squids...the chef threw in a slice of pizza, as he was trying to clean out the last of the last on Friday afternoon. Hubby also said that everything was quite tasty, but too much food! (Have you seen the size of the slices? Must be at least 5" square!)
  16. Well, my coworker couldn't make it, but I managed to get out and I was near the end of the "long line" as I got there around 12:15--I also managed to get the last cannoli, and picked up the pork shoulder for my coworker. I didn't have time to sit, and since I had been forewarned about the chowhound gathering, thought it best to try to avoid the crowd. What I did do, though, is tempt many more of my coworkers to want to go back tomorrow! Oh, and I had a delish sammie with fresh mozzarella and tomato, with that lovely smokey basil dressing. The cannoli, in a word, was sublime. MMMMMHHHHHH.... CS--if you are so close by, you MUST get out of your office and get online early--then you can do take-out and get back quickly if you must. You will NOT regret it!
  17. I am thinking of heading into DC on Thursday or Friday at lunch to sample the delights from Roberto's grill. Anyone want to join me? I've been wanting to get over there, but clueless about when to go, not to mention the fact that I haven't even been able to leave the office for lunch very much lately. (much less get to catch-up on eg) A co-worker and I have plans to go Thurs--if all goes well. I'll look to see if you're there, mdt, if you decided to go today instead of tomorrow. ...and I'm only 1 1/2 blocks away, cs!
  18. I will hopefully be making it to Galileo for grilling tomorrow (wait...that's today!)
  19. Thanks for letting me know, Babka. I won't be able to attend this time, as it looks like London is going to win out over Colorado. (Tough choice) If you don't mind, though, I'll take that welcome for myself as well since I somehow missed out on getting one of my own! I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing all about it upon my return, so don't forget the camera!
  20. I'm still a maybe at this point--HillValley, I sent you a PM. Did you get it?
  21. So I'm hoping the idea is that this is the thread where I should express my interest in attending? I will try to get the hubby to go as well, but I need to check the calendar for certain... Jumping ahead, and assuming this is a go, what's the parking like on a Sunday evening? (Is there any, and if so, where?) I'm pretty unfamiliar with the area, so specifics would be helpful. Is the restaurant metro accessible?
  22. I was purchasing a bottle of C2 today at a CVS in downtown WDC, and I noticed they had a display for Pepsi Edge...perfect opporunity for a side by side comparison. I took into account those of you who have disliked C2, but said you would drink Edge if you could get it. After the side-by-side, my feelings are that if you are a Coke drinker, you will not like Pepsi Edge. It is incredibly sweet, so much so that all I could do after taking a swig was to stick out my tounge and say "blecchh" It was an instantaneous reaction. (And I wanted to be fair, so I tasted the Pepsi first...) So, add one notch in the C2 column for me. As I stated before, I do like Coke better than Pepsi. Two of my co-workers also tasted my C2 and gave it a thumbs up. It does have the bite of Coke albeit with a bit of aftertaste, but IMO it is MUCH better than Diet Coke. I would rank it one above Diet Coke w/ Lime, which is the only Diet Coke I could really tolerate in the past. As far as the stock of C2 in stores, I had to seek it out in SFW--they had a small supply with the section for Atkins and low carb products. I also found it in the cold cases by the registers at Target. I do however think it's too early to proclaim that no one is buying it. I've been to the grocery quite a bit recently and haven't myself seen any overstocked shelves of C2 amongst depleted shelves of other Coke products. And, the more I drink it, the more I like it! I guess like anything else, it takes a while 'til you get used to a new flavor.
  23. I had asked for restaurant suggestions in another thread, but want to post here so that Firefly can receive it's due! First, my fault in not realizing how easy Firefly is to get to, as I've been wanting to eat there for some time. My anniversary at work (15 yrs) was just the occasion for my coworker and I to stop by...and all I can say is I wish I'd gone sooner! We went for lunch yesterday. ***(PLEASE NOTE--No need to wait for RW to go there--they have a lunch special 3 courses for $22, which was well worth the extra <$2. ) Forgive my poor memory on not recalling all the ingredients, but what I can recall is that it has been many years since I have experienced such a wonderful marriage of flavors, so simply and beautifully prepared. Not to mention the generosity of Chef John W. and his willingness to spend time to make sure my food allergies would not be a problem. I had a wonderful tomato appetizer, dressed with some kind of shaved cheese that I should have inquired about, a balsamic vinegar that I have never experienced the likes of before, and purple basil that parlayed on my tounge alternating sweet and salty, as my coworker had a beautiful cucumber soup with watercress. Converstion halted, as the only thing heard coming from either mouth was "mmmmm." Second course, scallops (so sweet!) with grilled radicchio, inoki mushroom, dressed with a red wine sauce and I know there was sage in there only because the chef told me. I'm sure I'm missing other ingredients, but suffice it to say that everything "worked" together beautifully--Oh I forgot, there were oranges in there too! My coworker had a soft shell "sandwich" that sat atop a lighty toasted brioche, I believe. She said it was the best soft shell she had ever had, and that is saying alot from someone who has eaten many crabs in her lifetime, and lives on the western shore of the bay. Dessert was a very refreshing lemon sorbet. Just the ticket on a hot, humid, DC- typical July day. We were both impressed with the service--attuned to our needs, yet unobtusive. As both of us eyed a neighboring diner's dessert, we noted that a return visit will most definitely be needed to sample more items from the menu!
  24. A coworker of mine went last year to DG with a group of mid-20's, downtown workers--not a good experience. Food was fine, but they were treated like "dirt" and actually snubbed by the waiter since they ordered one of the least expensive wines on the menu. While I understand the strains of RW, I don't believe there is any reason to treat diners that way. (They could have skipped the wine entirely!)Myself, I would have said something right there and then, but she did not, and she won't hesitate to tell her friends not to dine there.
