  1. My mom was from North Carolina, and collards and hamhocks, boiled beyond recognition, were a thing. I grew up hating collard greens. It was only as an adult, when I had them prepared differently, that I liked them.
  2. It's super easy. Four chicken thighs, browned and then place a layer of sliced shallots on a large piece of foil or parchment if you prefer, and put the browned chicken on top of the shallots. Throw a bunch of fresh parsley, rosemary, and sage on top of the chicken. Put a bit of chicken stock on the foil, not much, just to create steam. Fold up the foil tightly and bake in a 400F oven for 40 minutes.
  3. For me it's a toss up between roast chicken and chicken and fresh herbs steamed in an aluminum pouch in the oven.
  4. We're planning on cooking beouf bourgignon for Christmas day. Not sure about Christmas eve or New Years yet.
  5. It's just the two of us, but we like leftovers, so we're having: Roast chicken on a bed of parsnips, carrots, and potatoes Gravy Dressing (Southern style, with gizzards) Deviled eggs Cranberry sauce Green beans sauteed with shallots Pumpkin Pie from the Fannie Farmer Baking Book recipe Candied yams w/ marshmallows (Southern style)
  6. Shallots instead of onions. They make everything better.

    Food after Dental Work

Cold pureed soups are good for this. Potato soup, celery soup, gazpacho etc.
  8. This is an absurdly basic question: We are moving into a new house that came with kitchen appliances. The stovetop is flat and smooth; no electrical heating elements. Does that mean it is an induction cooktop? If so, what's the practical difference?
  9. Our local grocery store seems to have started ordering and stocking commercial rather than consumer retail basics like toilet paper and flour (the kind usually destined for restaurants). I'm glad they're doing it because these items were previously unobtainable.
  10. They might be black-eyed peas, but I'm not sure.
  11. Toilet paper seems to have returned to the shelves here, though eggs are hit and miss. My husband says we're saving a lot of money by cooking at home, but he hasn't seen my wine.com order....
  12. Scored a bag of AP flour at the grocery store!
  13. We made a cassoulet-esque dish from great northern beans, the turkey thighs that were the only thing in the store, and some kielbasa. It was actually pretty tasty.
  14. Sure, here's my fave BBQ sauce: 1/3 cup molasses 1 TB yellow mustard 2 tsp chili powder 1 tsp Worcestshire sauce 1/2 tsp smoked paprika 1/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper 3/4 cup ketchup
  15. My favorite is blindingly simple. Put them on a sheet pan for 40 minutes, turning halfway, and then brush with BBQ sauce and put in for 10 more minutes.
  16. Trip to the store for meat was a bust. The only thing they had was turkey breast and turkey thighs, so I'll be using the thighs to make cassoulet.
  17. We're making lasagna today so we'll have leftovers for days. Shopping is a challenge. I made a huge batch of BBQ chicken wings over the weekend because that was the only part of the chicken left at the grocery store. If people would stop freaking out and just buy normally, everything would be, well, normal at the store.
  18. If I can't get the food I want at the local grocery store, at least I can have a case of wine shipped to me. I placed orders with wine.com and Korbel today. Cheers!
  19. Some Gruet Blanc de Blancs, fontina cheese, rosemary crackers...charcuterie

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble getting pizza dough to stretch out! Looks delicious!
  22. Whatever they were, they were boneless and it came out really well.
  23. They just went in the oven. If nothing else, it smells good! I'll try to remember to post a picture!
  24. Cooking ribs again. This time I'm trying this: https://www.food.com/recipe/wine-braised-boneless-short-ribs-155485
