  1. This was aired in the UK about 18 months ago and was my favourite of the Faking It series. Ed worked in a burger van (frying burgers and onions) and in no way could have been called a cook in any way! (You'll see what I mean). Ramsay is featured but Ed is mostly mentored by the head chef of Mezzo, a Conran restaurant in London. I know what has happened to Ed since (on a Faking It update) but i will wait until you've seen the programme to say what.
  2. Marcus Warering at the Savoy Grill?
  3. Well my original comments stand then. The man is talking complete bobbins
  4. That man must have been deluded. I live in Chester and the only food you cna get at 3am is yuor usual takeaway rubbish, the same goes for Liverpool and Macclesfield (which is only a small town anyway!). Basildog, please don' t think all us NorthWest people are so rude. I wouldn't cream of turning up at a restuarnt expecting to get served after 10pm. Edit: sorry didnt notice you said 3pm instead of 3am!
  5. Tony, you are right, it is the Tamarind guy. Benares is all Atul Kocchar's fault
  6. Even as a smoker, I can understand non-smoker's arguments for a smoke-free restaurant. I really don't mind if restaurants do become non-smoking - I can wait a few hours before I have one - but what worries me is if the same ban hits the pubs. Yes food is generally available in most pubs but they are mostly drinking establishments where people go to relax and/or get a bit squiffy and enjoying a few ciggies is part and parcel of that for quite a lot of people. This is maybe where a ban will meet most opposition.
  7. Full top 50 list here... Restaurant mag's 50 best
  8. Fischers at Baslow? I keep intending to take the folks here as they are Derbyshire-way
  9. Is it The Moody Goose in Bath???
  10. Has anyone tried Utsav, new place in Kensington? Think the chef there was at Zaika also...
  11. with a lager beurre blanc poured from a test-tube.... Surely a Boddingtons beurre blanc, just to keep it local like
  12. take a look at Restaurant Magazine, they have a recruitment section on their site. to be honest i don't know how good the online version is, but the magazine is excellent, and the recruitment section is quite important. -che Che, the restaurant people link I gave earlier is part of the restaurant magazine's site too - just takes you different bits of the site
  13. Also see http://www.restaurantpeople.co.uk/ And there are a million squillion agencies in London too
  14. Carlton award winners here...

    Chef!

Coop, I went to see this last April (2002) and loved it. Get the two disc DVD, lots of good extras. "You were right about Mick Hucknall. His music's rubbish AND he's a ginger". Great soundtrack CD too. Unfortunately, the Hacienda is no more. They are building some sodding flats on the site and calling them ... 'Hacienda'. It's bloody sacrilege!
  16. Ah, I see it on the 'Wine' home page but wut when you click on the 'restaurants' side link, it's not there. Sorry if I gave erroneous info but they did never use to put the Sunday review up!
  17. For some bizarre reason, the Telegraph never posts its Sunday reviews.
  18. Robert Reid has indeed moved and gone to Madame Prunier. Tis in Restaurant magazine and also on its website (see 'On the move' story, third one down) www.therestaurantgame.com Seems he wasn't a happy chappy at Lola's
  19. tutti frutti, as much as this pains me to have to point out, methinks Thom might have been joking in his last paragraph? Just a thought...
  20. This place sells tinned pumpkin puree http://www.madeinamerica.co.uk/ and a whole lot more!
  21. Gary, how did you find that out? When did it happen? I've never been but had hoped to take the folks one day as they live that way
  22. Off topic slightly, but if you are at all nervous of dodgy earth tremors Bapi then I would stay away from here at the moment! Think there's been about 30 quakes now, and no one knows when they're going to stop.
  23. Tsk, Andy, don't spell Altrincham like it's said! Juniper is indeed excellent, although it is a little bit stuffy for my liking. Despite working in Manc, I haven't yet tried many of its restaurants. But here goes. I visisted the MPW River Room at the Lowry hotel a few weeks after it opened last year and once the food had been sent back to achieve an edible temperature it was quite pleasant. The £15(ish) Sunday lunch menu looks quite good value if you're here over a weekend. For good pub grub, head to the The Ox, which is on a road off the end of Deansgate and across from the Museum of Science and Industry. (www.theox.co.uk) Choice in Castlefields is better than the other offerings in the area (Barca, Quay Bar) (www.choicemcr.co.uk), even with the cheesey piano bar. Lots of Scottish influences on the menu done well. Palmiro in Whalley Range is said to be very good. For good pizza, go to Croma rather than PizExp. There's a Conran Zinc Bar & Grill in the Triangle Centre, and a Petit Blanc somewhere. And yes, the Rajdoot is still with us!
  24. Whatever you do, don't eat anywhere near/on the Camps Elysee - it's absolute madness and pricey to boot! But do hear down that way for midnight, its quite fun. As for the Eiffel Tower, as David said the Jules Verne is fine - but don't go to the one on the floor below, it's disgusting touristy fayre.
  25. gosh I do feel a fool now. Anyhow, back to the story. After reading the Scotsman version, this bloke who complained does sound a bit of a pompous git. Indeed, if something is 'wrong' with the dish and you wish to complain, it seems commonsense to do it before you've eaten it.
