  1. sorry, I guess I was being over sensitive. Having a bad day Thank god I'm off to the pub later
  2. pardon me for breathing, I was merely passing on something that I had seen. I don't have time to go round picking up all sides of the story
  3. I would post the link but it only links to Scottish Herald home page, so here it be. Tsk, customers, who do they think they are?! (edit) I have deleted the copied Herald story as requested by Andy. Pesky copyright! The link is in Kikujiro's post below, anyhoo
  4. "It appears that Blinis will not be closing immediately, the intention is apparently to remain open until the restaurant is sold. (Which could of course be tomorrow or next year!)." which is why it says "going concern" in the press release I posted
  5. That's what I thought, especially with the deli thrown in too!
  6. Just thought you'd like to hear the news that Blinis is being sold off by the hotel company that owns it. Here is ze info: Top restaurant in Bath goes on market Leading licensed property agents, Christie & Co, have just been instructed to market a unique culinary business in the World Heritage City of Bath. “Blinis” was only launched last November and has since been recognised as one of the leading Restaurants in the UK. Head Chef, Martin Blunos, formerly of Lettonie Restaurant in Bath, retained his coveted 2 Michelin Star rating for Blinis and has expanded the operation from just a Restaurant to also a Café Bar and Deli selling top class gourmet goods. One of the principal attractions of Blinis is its unrivalled location in the City; adjacent to the world famous Pulteney Bridge with stunning views on both floors over the River and wier. The decision to sell Blinis has been taken by Chase Hotels Ltd, who also own its sister operation Duke’s Hotel in nearby Great Pulteney Street. Speaking for the organisation, Philippa Hughes explained the reason why; “We have been delighted with the response to our first Restaurant venture which was prompted by the closure of Lettonie Restaurant last Summer and the desire to enable Martin Blunos to have an outlet for his renowned culinary genius. Although not the best months to be trading a new venture in Bath, we have also been pleased to see the business so quickly into profit. Chase Hotels has however decided to concentrate all its efforts on the continued success of its core business, hotels, and the future expansion is aimed in this direction, leaving no room for such an individual style of business as Blinis.” Fans of Mr Blunos will be delighted to learn that after a successful series of trial “gourmet dinners” at other Chase Hotels in Exeter and on Dartmoor, he will be alternating his time between the existing three hotel restaurants and bringing his unique style of cooking to a wider geographical audience. Blinis underwent total refurbishment last autumn with beautifully appointed interiors and newly equipped kitchens. Blinis is for sale as a going concern with offers invited for the leasehold in the region of £99,000. John Harrision of the Bristol office of Christie & Co is handling the sale.
  7. Martin Wishart is involved in a new deli in Leith, near his restaurant. It's going to be called Relish and he'll be making nice things for it such as takeway stuff and cured meats. A search on the Scotsman will reveal a little more (but no address). I have always pondered about opening my own deli/food emporium but I would probably eat all the profits.
  8. la gousse is off anyway as its still shut. Sorry don't really know Oxford, but I do believe they have a Le Petit Blanc and there's a Quod (owned by the bloke who set up Browns)
  9. Thanks Andy, I'm booked in for next Friday so I'll see if its as good as Fort thinks it is. I've spoken to Paul before for work, it was just after Christmas lunch service and it sounded like he had been relaxing with a crate of champagne to himself.
  10. I've had the good fortune to win a free lunch at Juniper! Has anyone been? Any recs on what I should try? Is it 'dressy'? Any comments welcome
  11. My friend's said they went to somewhere in Rochdale that wasn't too bad, called Eight-something??? Said service was a bit crap but food (although not Michelin standard) was quite nice.
  12. It agree that the majority of the best restaurants in the UK are in London and the south east but there is no need to slag off other parts of the country. Don't get smug
  13. Looking at the Fisherman's Lodge website, I've found out what the hotel is and it's owned by the same peeps. Click on the links section of the FL website and there's the Samling, Seaham Hall and Treacle Moon
  14. Cappers, it's not very nice to call someone's home town a shit hole. It might be in your opinion and who knows, Gavin may agree with you, but somepeople won't. But we all can't live in sparkling southern metropolises Gavin, how about Fisherman's Lodge in Jesmond Dene? http://www.fishermanslodge.co.uk/ I'm sure there's a nice new hotel and resto opened up that way too but for the life of me I can't think what it is (was in the Caterer a few weeks back)
  15. He's in the pubs & bars bit on the website, looks like he writes for the Monday edition
  16. Countess (anyone else wanting Spanish food!) I have found a website called www.agapes.com, which sells sobrasada for about £8. It also sells pata negra, spanish cheeses & oils, mebrillo, etc. All looks very nice but its about 18 euros (£11-12) for delivery for orders under 100 euros.
  17. Both websites for the Carved Angel and the Horn of PLenty can be found here http://www.thehornofplenty.co.uk Chez Nous in Plymouth is meant to be 'ok' too.
  18. Thanks Countess, I'll look out for the Italian version and I know remember a friend who is visiting Majorca in a month, so problem possibly solved short-term! I tried it as you said– on bread with onion – and it was delicious but I also had it on pizza with sugar sprinkled on top. It sounds horrendous but if you have a sweet tooth like me, it really is very moreish!
  19. Hi all. I had the mixed fortune to go to Majorca for a (package) holiday last year. However, we were in a nice little fishing town with some nice restaurants. Anyway enough of the postcard, I tried sobrasada, which is a kind of spreadable chorizo, and my tastebuds fell in love. I've tried searching on the net (checked Brindisa and Lupe Pintos) for stockists in the UK to no avail. Does anyone know where I can get this stuff? Any good Spanish delis your way? (sorry its not directly restaurant-related, but you lot know all things foody!)
  20. Granted, the Grosvenor Brasserie is very good but one good resto surrounded by mediocrity does not make Chester a culinary destination whinge, moan
  21. I really wish Chester or somewhere near it would become the next Padstow. There's plenty of rich toffs around here willing to pay and us not-so-flush foodies would love it too. Instead a lovely historical city is brimming over with crappo chains and unimagainative indpendents. I was mulling over the idea of opening a deli in one of the suburbs but there seems little point if there's no decent restaurant culture :(
  22. I will be once again visiting Amsterdam in June after an enjoyable few days last year. We dined at some abysmal places unfortunately. The first night was a touristy Chinese place, beacuse we'd only just arrived and we're too tired to search. One night we ate at an awful steak place (on the Singel I think, next to a pancake restaurant). I had a kind of chicken satay which was edible, if a little cloying. However, my partner's teak left a lot to be desired. It was almost raw and when alerting the waitress, she pretended she didn't know what we were talking about! hey ho The best place by far was Morlang on Keizersgracht. Informal atmos, great staff, and lovely modern Dutch (I assume) food. To start I had bruschetta with Dutch goat's cheese, and a salad of chicory, dried ham and fried apples, which was lighter than it sounds, while blokeyo had Quiche made of green asparagus, Monchou (Dutch soft cheese) and baby leeks with tomato and caper chutney. Mains were thoroughly enjoyed, myself having the pappardelle with smoked mackerel, truffle oil, scallions and Noilly Prat and the other half trying the 'Blinde vink' (a kind of steak sausagey thing made of beef steak, beef tartare and Dutch ham) with white asparagus, boletus cepes and roseval potatoes. I had a rather unintersting selection of Dutch cheeses for pud but I nicked a bit of the Dutch apple cake from bloke ad was very nice. As I said, I'm going back this summer so if anyone has any recommendations... I'd like to try the Super Club, is it hard to get reservations?
  23. Adam, its not really that new. They are quite a few Zizzi's around the country. Ours (in Chester) is right across the road from Est Est Est and although Zizzi provide a very simple 'traditional' menu, the quality of the food is much better and the staff are nicer too. I love their calzones, they are hoooge and very tasty. They are indeed owned by ask, the website is http://www.askcentral.co.uk/zizzi_rest.htm
  24. As I am an eagle-eyed reader of 'restaurant' I noticed that Joe Warwick wrote both the Valentines piece and the New Orleans. Simon, you liked the New Orleans piece yet you still want Joe shot??? (sorry to be pedantic!)
  25. Hey, you're in the new mag! have you and Thom been conflabbing?
