  1. Welcome to eGullet Tommy g. Next time "eat" and give us a report on the food!
  2. Humberto Campos Jr. is the new chef/owner of Jocelyne’s, 168 Maplewood Ave, Maplewood (973-763-4460). The restaurant’s name will change to Lorena’s on October 1. BYO. I am not sure of the time frame but somewhere between 8 to 10 years ago Lowell and I were having dinner at LouCa’s in Edison and our waiter was so outstanding and knowledgeable that I gave him my card and told him if he ever opened a restaurant to call me. It turns out that I gave my card to Chef Campos Jr. We had a delightful dinner at Lorena's recently that started off with deeply satisfying summer squash soup with chives and toasted pumpkin seed oil; an heirloom tomato salad with extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and micro basil; and a yellowfin tuna tartare with fresh herbs, white truffle oil and fleur de sel. Entrees were sauteed soft shell crabs stuffed with shrimp served over Israeli couscous with an apple, caper and curry brown-butter sauce; and roasted pork tenderloin stuffed with apricot confit, served with haricot vert and a veal stock reduction. Dessert was a luscious napoleon of fresh fruits and almond hazelnut tuile and chantilly. If you loved Jocelyne’s you certainly will love Lorena’s. Phone: (973-763-4460).

    table 8

I returned to Table 8 and had another memorable dinner. Started with the addictive almonds and gorgonzola stuffed dates wrapped in bacon and the warm Maryland crabcake with crispy asparagus, red pepper salad, and a sun dried tomato vinaigrette. Entrees were a fabulous spicy cocoa and walnut crusted filet of sole and a tender chicken Kiev with truffle herb butter. Chef Michael Clampffer sent out a small sampling of his homemade ice cream and although all of the flavors were quite delicious we swooned over the corn ice cream. Yes—corn ice cream. It was sweet with a subtle hint of corn. With an espresso and a cappuccino the bill was $42 per person with tax and tip. Phone: 973-746-2233.

    Copeland

Put Copeland, at the Westin Governor Morris, 2 Whippany Road, Morristown on your “go to” list. Based on my one visit and the exquisite twelve course tasting menu (three courses of four small plates nested on one large dish) I can’t wait to return to this gorgeous venue. Thomas Ciszak is the Executive Chef and only offers the tasting menu on Saturday nights. However, I would suggest that if you are interested in having a tasting menu on another night call and ask if the restaurant can accommodate you. Cost is $89 and $28 with wine pairing. The menu changes seasonally in order to take advantage of the freshest ingredients and flavors of the season. We had the following: Amuse of tuna tartare in a profiterole Gazpacho soup with garlic chips FIRST COURSE Oyster on the half shell with tomato, ginger and lemon oil Tuna tartar with cucumber and tapioca Caesar salad Seared foie gras with rhubarb and aged balsamic (Champagne, Pol Roger Brut Reserve NV and Riesling, Gravelstone Jekel ’03) SECOND COURSE Lavender crusted marlin with artichokes Chili-cinnamon glazed Chilean sea bass with potato wrapped shrimp Boneless rack of lamb wih parmesan gnocchi Braised short ribs with red shallot confit (Sauvignon Blanc, Daydream Reverie ’03 and Shiraz, Thomas Hyland Penfold’s ’03) THIRD COURSE Chilled strawberry soup Peach Napoleon with a crisp caramel wafer Hazelnut “god nugget” milk chocolate praline Warm Valrhona chocolate brioche pudding with Tahitiann vanilla ice cream ( Moscato d’ Asti, Villa Rosa) The bar area where martinis are a specialty, has a snug atmosphere with cushy seats where you can also dine or sample items from the raw seafood bar. There is also an intimate wine room for private dinners with seating for up to sixteen. Copeland is open seven days a week serving breakfast from 6:30 AM, lunch, and dinner. For more information log onto http://www.copelandrestaurant.com and call 973-539-7300 for reservations.

    table 8

We loved Table 8, 615 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair; BYO. Appetizers included mushroom soup decorated with truffle oil which captured the essence of mushrooms; a refreshing warm goat cheese salad with baby beets; not to be missed dates stuffed with almonds and gorgonzola and wrapped in smoked bacon; Moroccan flavored shrimp beggars purse; a very rich porcini and roasted shallot ravioli with truffle cream; and crispy calamari with house made tomato sauce and zesty citrus marmalade. Entrees were equally delicious. Lowell surprised us by ordering a special steak au poivre rather than his usual pork dish. I was tempted to order the pork tenderloin which came stuffed with apples, walnuts and gorgonzola but opted for Chatham cod served with a rich creamy chowder of baby clams. Next time I dine here I will order the spicy cocoa and walnut crusted filet of sole or the chicken Kiev with truffle herb butter as I had a little taste of both and thought they were fabulous. We were very impressed by the jaw dropping décor. Brick and brown tufted walls, tall cushy red velvet chairs, and ceiling lights which changed colors all created a sophisticated sleek mood. Tables were placed far apart which also added to the intimate atmosphere. The chef’s selection of homemade ice cream was good and I especially liked the pistachio. Homemade sorbets were available also. Chocolate lovers can opt for the warm molten chocolate cake with hot caramel and a new take on crème brulee which is infused with thyme and served with figs and biscotti. Coffee was very good. 15. No you are not legally allowed to bring in hard liquor to a BYO restaurant. Forget that I told you to do so!!
  16. The Black Forest Inn, 249 Rt 206 N, Stanhope is offering an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet every Thursday and Friday for $14.50.
  17. Plattetude--Great to meet you, your wife and beautiful son also. The Cup Joint, 732 Jefferson Street Hoboken is BYO and does not serve liquor but the owners named the restaurant after the moniker used during prohibition for restaurants that served alcohol. The Cup Joint is not a coffee house, although the coffee is very good, but a casual, solid neighborhood restaurant serving extremely good food at very reasonable prices. Portions are more than ample. I couldn’t finish my salad and we were unable to finish the delicious serving of carrot cake that we ordered for dessert. We started with a Caesar salad that I loved as there was just a hint of anchovies, crisp cold lettuce and a creamy dressing. The Cup’s green salad with arugula, watercress, frisee, parmesan, and lemon herb vinaigrette was light and refreshing. There are many sandwiches and four entrees along with daily specials to choose from. New items will be tested and put on the menu as the owners get a feel for what the customers are seeking. We had a grilled salmon and a wonderful beef/turkey meat loaf topped with BBQ sauce. There is also a sandwich called The Diner made with meatloaf, mashed potatoes and fried onions which sounded very enticing. Both entrees were accompanied by broiled cauliflower and rice enhanced with red peppers and scallions. The kitchen sent out a rich parmesan gnocchi with basil cream sauce which we inhaled and would make a great app to share. They also sent out a thirst quenching strawberry lemonade for us to taste. Bring a flask of vodka with you to spike up this delicious drink. Dessert was a humongous slice of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting which was worth every calorie. Lowell reported that the coffee was good. With tax and tip the dinner was $62.
  18. We like Tanya's, Grove Ave, Jersey City for Polish food.

  20. I called and was told that they don't take reservations. How many tables/seats do they have? I usually avoid restaurants that don't take reservations.
