  1. In Kauai try The Beach House.
  2. THANK-YOU! Just to set the record straight. I have no problem with eGullet passing me by. I will be content to be #2. It would be an honor to be under eGullet! ;)
  3. Lucky You. Honolulu has some great restaurants but it is built up. I liked that island the least. Be sure to go to Maui or Kauai which was my favorite. We LOVED Alan Wongs and Chef Mavros in Honolulu. In Maui David Paul's is excellent as was Plantation House. Didn't like Roy's at all.Be sure to make reservations ASAP.
  4. I don't think it is the location. When the food and service are good people will seek out a restaurant even in the most unlikely places. As for Jon & Louie's. I ate there twice and once the food was good and the service was horrible. The next time the food was awful and the service was good. This restaurant also asked us to wait at the bar when the restaurant was half full and we had a reservation. When they saw that we weren't going to order a drink they sat us.
  5. We tried this 10 day old restaurant tonight and thought it was very good. Certainly worth a return visit. For appetizers Lowell had a crisp and tasty arugola salad with olives and shaved asiago. I had sauteed escarole with tomatoes which was a bit too chewy for my taste. Lowell's entee was a pappardelle with lamb ragu sauce. It was super except they didn't use the VERY wide pappardelle noodles which I love. I had an excellent filet of salmon served in a lemon caper sauce over spinach. Dessert was a so-so tiramisu. We were told that it was made in house but I have my doubts. Lowell liked the tiramisu and finished it up saving me some calories! BYO 499 S Livingston Ave. Livingston. 973-992-4455.
  6. Tommy--that is not fair. Tell us the good, the bad and the so-so! Why are you confused? ;)
  7. There is an Indian vegetarian restaurant on Bloomfield Ave. in Montclair called Upudi. There is also a Kosher take out Chinese restaurant on Pleasant Valley Way near Eagle Rock. It's near Primavera. I believe that there is also a Kosher sushi restaurant in the strip mall near Primavera. Gourmet Galaxy on Eagle Rock near CBL has good take out.
  8. No one will get upset if you disagree except me! ;) I am not big on Mexican food and eat it less than often. Maybe twice in my lifetime! So--your opinion is respected. Perhaps if I have the REAL stuff and like it I would seek it out more often.
  9. Maybe you are thinking of Nero Wolf.
  10. Just be forewarned. Our second visit to Taste was a disaster. We were never seated. Stood like blobs for a few minutes and walked out. The place was empty. The servers just looked at us. No one came over. Let us know if the service has improved. I would go back there again as I thought the chef was very talented.
  11. jsibley--Have you been to Carmelita's in Maplewood?
  12. Is this the place in Jersey City that is suppose to be the size of a football stadium?
  13. Welcome Jsibley. It's great to see you on eGullet. Be sure to let us know where you have been dining. You always have great finds. (Edited by Rosie at 8:51 pm on Jan. 14, 2002)
  14. I don't buy much meat but when I do I buy it at Costco. The veal chops, steaks and ribeye roasts are excellent. Otherwise I will go to Kings or Fresh Fields.
  15. Wow.Sounds like a great find. Thanks for the report. Was the place busy?
  16. Never been. Heard it was good. You may want to post this note on the NY board also.
  17. Can you post a list of who is coming as of today?

    China 46

tigertech--Welcome to eGullet. You should also try Hunan Cottage on Rt. 46 in Fairfield. Also authentic and VERY good. Where else do you like to eat in NJ?
  19. Island Mom--Kona is the best coffee in the world IMHO. However, I beleive the Kona coffee sold at Costco in NJ is a blend. I didn't have one bad cup of coffee when I was in Hawaii. Unfortunately I seldom have a good cup of coffee in NJ.(Edited by Rosie at 2:49 pm on Jan. 10, 2002)
  20. Looking forward to seeing your younger brother Rich and his handsome moustache! I think the last time we broke bread together was in Mt. Laurel.
  21. Basilico is excellent. Down the street from Wine Library is Thai Elephant which is also very good. There is a crepe restaurant in Millburn if you want something very casual.
  22. Bea--If you try Fumio again please let us know if it is worth a visit. We were there once.
  23. I have eaten there and the food was very good. Looking forward to your report.
  24. Welocme to eGullet and thanks for the info. What street is this restaurant on? Ridgewood is restaurant heaven. I like Latour and 28 Oak.
