  1. Lowell and I would be happy to pick anyone up at the train station and drive them back after dinner. We would have room for 3 people.

  8. Fumio, 21 E Northfield Ave, Livingston has reopened with new owners. We started off with a complimentary iceberg lettuce salad with a ginger dressing. Appetizers were a seafood soup swimming in shrimp, scallops, mussels, crab and clams. The fish was good but I didn't care for the miso broth. Lowell liked the whole thing! I had a special of salmon sushi wrapped around avocado, ginger and whitefish. It was excellent and if I had two orders of this I would have been very happy. We ordered "cooked" entrees rather than a sushi or sashimi entrée. I had a disappointing seared tuna with sautéed scallions, mushrooms, broccoli and Chinese noodles. The menu said that the tuna would be topped with homemade wasabi sauce which was missing. Lowell had the Japanese sirloin steak which tasted more like a London broil to me. The steak was cool but edible and not great. I wouldn't order it again. The menu said it would be accompanied with Oriental vegetables which turned out to be asparagus and shredded cabbage! We passed on dessert and were served orange segments. I certainly would go back here and try the sushi dinners as our appetizer was outstanding. BYO. Also, the restaurant was empty and the food came out very fast. We arrived at 5:15 and left at 6:15.
  9. Two people have posted that they didn't have a good meal at Panico's. Can you elaborate? I have had consistantly good meals there. What was wrong?
  10. Maize is open.
  11. I bought the book and hope to read it over the holidays.
  12. Arthur's Downtown. The problem I have with all of the restaurants around PAC is that you have to pay for parking.
  13. I vote early and often at a few different computers. #12 is creeping up on me. Keep me at #11 until eGullet catches up and then eGullet can go to the #1 spot and I will be content to be #2! ;)
  14. Give us your list.
  15. Gee--do you really think that anyone here is OBSESSED???? ;)
  16. Where do you go for a late night dinner when you don't want to go to a diner or a bar? A friend is looking for someplace where you can get a good meal after 10 PM. ~~~ Please note:

    Jocelyne's

Carmelita's is a great inexpensive find. He has the following statement on his menu: Mexican food that is so authentic you are afraid to drink the water.

Try the scallops next time. Best I have ever had.

    Aquavit

Oh Vay!! ์ to park? I don't mind spending a fortune for dinner but I do mind ์ to park. That is one reason I dislike dining in NY. But thanks for the heads up. Don't mind 14 courses either. I expect they are small. I read that they had a 5 course tasting for ๛. 贄 with wine.We had 11 plus courses at The French Laundry and survived! I don't like vodka either but Lowell loves it. I wonder if you can request no vodka if you have the tasting dinner with the wine. (Edited by Rosie at 2:42 pm on Dec. 17, 2001)

    Jocelyne's

Call three weeks ahead for a reservation. This is one of the best French restaurants in NJ. David Corcoran from the NY Times gave Jocelyne's an excellent in his 7/1/01 review.
  22. We returned to Bella Rosa last night and had another great meal. When seated we munched on small Italian rolls dipped into a garlic/herb olive oil. For appetizers Lowell and I shared sautéed broccoli rabe. We try to start the meal off healthy! Our daughter had a fabulous creamy butternut squash with gorgonzola soup. For entrees Lowell had a tremendous tender pork chop giambotti which he finished by gnawing on the bone. I had a perfectly cooked onion crusted salmon filet with a roasted garlic rosemary Dijon potato sauce. The sauce was too creamy for my taste especially after having a few spoonfuls of the squash soup. Our daughter’s dish is what I want to try the next time I dine here as it was fabulous. Sesame encrusted ahi tuna loin with a ginger soy butter sauce came rare as requested with mashed potatoes. It’s not that I dislike mashed potatoes but perhaps rice would have been a better accompaniment. We were stuffed and were not going to order dessert. However, our waiter informed us that a fresh berry cobbler just came out of the oven so we succumbed and had that for dessert. Delicious!

    Ryland Inn

Ryland Inn is excellent. You might want to visit it in the spring/summer when Craig uses the herbs and vegetables from his garden. The surrounding area is lovely. You hinted that it would be a schlep so that's why I was hesitant to tell you to drive out. Is it worth it. Yes.
