  1. Jason--Another suggestion would be Casa Vasca in Newark.
  2. Let me know if you are going to dine in NJ. Also, since we just were at China 46 I would recommend another place. Also, it should be BYO and Italian since that is pure NJ. Come over to West Orange and I'll open one Turley!!!

    Rats

Rat's is the most beautiful restaurant in NJ. I was there last year for a press dinner and the following was the menu: Amuse bouches of chopped chicken livers on toasted baguette Lemongrass oyster soup (Veuve Clicquot, Burt, Yellow Label) Salad of baby vegetables with truffle vinaigrette (Chassagne-Montrachet, Ruchottes, B.Moreau, 1997) Confit of Arctic char with baby fennel, fresh herbs and caviar (Pernand-Vergelesses, Domaine Rollin 1997) Mustard crusted rack of lamb with baby artichokes, roasted garlic flan and tomato Provencle (Schuetz Oles, Korte Ranch, Napa, 1999) St. Marcellin Elderflower sorbet with champagne Dessert sampler: baked fig with chevre, mini chocolate souffle, cherry clafoutis and strawberries with tomato confiture (Vouvray, Moelleux, Phillip Foreau, 1997; Vintage Port, York Creek, 1996) Phone: 609-584-7800 Be sure to a minimum of an hour to tour the Grounds For Sculpture, a 23 acre sculpture park that is unlike anything you have ever seen before. If you are having dinner at Rat's I believe that you can tour the grounds for free. Also, there will be a story about the Epicurean Palette to be held at the Grounds For Sculpture and Rat's on Table Hopping With Rosie 6/25. Be sure to give us a report.
  10. Went for diinner at Blue Sky last night as they will be closing after Sat. night. Had oysters, pate and a salad for appetizers. Entrees were panko crusted soft shell crabs, braised veal and prune ravioli (fabulous), and cod with spring vegetables. Shared a chocolate bread pudding for dessert. Have had many meals at Blue Sky as well as wine dinners and parties. Chef Joseph's cuisine will be missed. Bye-Bye Blue Sky. Wishing you the best in Maine.
  11. Which bread company are you switching to?
  12. Haven't heard of this place. When did they open? Any other info?
  13. Ellen--thank you for the gorgeous pictures and delicious report. Where in NJ can we get these products?

  16. I have no idea. Any suggestions? I posted a new topic on the General Food Board. Post your answer here: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=22810 joi h--If we come up with a burger will you put it on your menu?
  17. Ouch!! Rail Paul---Where do you go for a burger now?
  18. How about developing an eGullet burger? Also, can the burger card be used by different people? If 10 people come in and order nine hamburgers is the 10th one free. BTW--I really like your burgers. Haven't had one in some time. Getting hungry!
  19. Do you know name, phone # and address of new Portuguese place?
  20. It was a great evening but think about doing a dinner at Hunan cottage so we can compare the two places. I like the salt and pepper shrimp and salt and pepper soft shell crabs better at Hunan Cottage.
  21. The new Rt 24 ends at Rt 287. We go thru Morristown and pick up Rt 24 again. I assume the old Rt 24 goes into the Rt 24 we pick up in Morristown.
  22. I updated the post. Sammy's Ye Old Cider Mill, 353 Mendham Road West (Route 24), Mendham, is the best-known secret around! Even though this establishment does not have a sign to let you know that it is a restaurant I have never been here when there wasn't a wait. Sammy's has been in the Fornaro family for over 60 years and is now run by third generation family members, Maryann, Phil & Sam Fornaro. You may be confused at your first visit to Sammy's as things are done differently from any other restaurant that I have dined at. When you enter Sammy's don't wait to be seated. Go to the hostess station or get in line because there will most likely be a line. Look at the menu nailed to the wall and tell the hostess your name and give her your order. Most people come for the outstanding dry-aged Black Angus T-bone steaks, lobsters, and enormous cuts of lamb, veal and pork chops. Be forewarned you dinner includes salad dressed with house made wine vinegar, a fresh vegetable or corn on the cob, the best French fries in New Jersey, dessert and coffee. You may not want an appetizer although you may want to splurge on stone crabs which are offered in season. Our dinner for three people with 2 wines, 2 beers and one soda was close to $200 with tax and tip. Ok. You have ordered. Now what? You are sent to the basement where there is a handmade wooden bar which dates back to the 1920's prohibition era when Sammy's was a speakeasy, video games and a bumper pool table to help you bide your time. Order a drink from John (he makes a mean martini) and tell him your name. Don't pay him as the bar bill will be added to your food check (a nice touch). A few minutes before your food is ready the phone will ring, John will call your name and you may now go to the dining room where you will have a scrumptious dinner. Dinner served Mon. through Thurs. 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM; Fri. and Sat. 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM; Sun. 4:30 to 9:00. Phone 973-543-7675 for directions. Reservations are not taken.
