  1. I'm a Guerlain girl too, but I wear Omnia.
  2. Wow!!!! Back in the day - my wild mis-spent youth - I was a stand up comedian at Yuk Yuk's. Not to cast aspersions, but you pretty much have to leap on the comedian's back and ride him like a cowboy to get tossed out of that place...what the heck were you doing?! ← In all seriousness, I was really surprised that we were singled out for being "loud"--we were just laughing (and not outrageously loud, either!). And we were not being rude or obnoxious by talking to one another during the acts. I really don't know what happened there. And to make this post slightly more on-topic, tonight I had coffee and a lemon bundt cake from Starbucks. Cake was reasonably moist, with a very sweet glaze. Not terribly good.
  3. Diva? Chartwell's?
  4. I've seen the Katherine Hepburn recipe, but I've never tried it. I think I remember it not have too much chocolate...so that's probably why I took a pass. I hope the brownies turn out for you. Someone noted a slightly longer cooking time--my oven has not been caliberated, so perhaps baking them for 25 minutes would be better. I just take the pan out when the skewer comes out with moist crumbs.
  5. Very interesting! That's for digging that up!
  6. Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Butter cake" is merely a cake category that involves creaming butter and sugar, beating in eggs, and then adding dry ingredients (alternating with milk). Yellow cakes and pound cakes are therefore examples of butter cakes.
  7. What a stylish name--I love it. Congrats!
  8. Truthfully, my outings this week have been very alcohol-centric, but I'll report anyway Wednesday: Frog and Firkin: Wednesday is Customer Appreciation day, and thus they offer all their drink specials (and wing specials too). I had too many shots of Jaeger to count, and a glass of Mission Hill cab. sauv. that tasted off. I guess not many people order wine at a bar. We ended the evening at Viva nightclub in Richmond--wow, I haven't been here since high school, when it was cool to chill here and rub shoulders with other misguided Asian youth. Drank pitchers of a popular Honger concoction (whiskey and green tea...and yes, it tastes even worse than it sounds), and downed many shots of liquor. That was a rough night. Saturday: Yuk Yuk's: A friend won free tickets, so we shared jalapeno poppers and Coronas. We also got kicked out for being too rowdy. Can you imagine? Am I not a very well-behaved young woman? I must've missed the "No Laughing" sign on my way in. After a few rounds of gin & tonics at my friend's house, we cabbed over to Aqua for another 4 or 6 drinks each. I ate something downtown that night that came with a sweet corn relish, but I don't remember what it was. I think it was...chicken? And shared a chocolate bar and cookies with a guy I'm seeing. Tonight I will be once again re-visiting by high school days by having bubble tea with some friends.
  9. I made her "Best Ever Cocoa Brownies" today, and although I think it's a very good recipe (moist, relatively rich, dark), I prefer my old recipe. Of course, this recipe is much cheaper to make than the one I normally use (it's in Recipe Gullet under Ling's Favourite Brownies), so I'll use the cocoa one for everyday. I agree with her portions being a bit stingy...you are supposed to end up with 25 brownies or 16 "large" brownies for this recipe. I quartered the pan and therefore only ate one brownie.
  10. peanut butter cookies, a bowl of blueberries, and chocolate truffles
  11. Right now my house smells like peanut butter cookies, but if you stop by in the evening, I usually have a pie or a cake in the oven. If you want to be specific, I think the sweet scents of brown sugar, chocolate and butter come through pretty well. Nothing smells better than a pan of brownies baking.
  12. I ran a search on L'Emotion before posting this thread, and that's what others have said.
  13. Dinner will be rather late and I'm rather allergic to anything outdoor-sy (I get cold easily ) so we must likely won't be dining on the patio anyway. I just realized that L'Emotion has 4 courses for $45.
  14. I'm having dinner with some friends at the end of the month, and I've narrowed down my restaurant choice to either Parkside or L'Emotion. I'm also open to other restaurant suggestions in that price range ($45 a person). Some of my friends ate at Cru just recently, so they will probably want to try another spot. The last time I ate at Parkside was a few years ago, and I remember the food to be really good. I know many Egulleters also like this place, but can anyone chime in on a recent experience at L'Emotion? http://www.lemotion.com/menu.html http://www.parksiderestaurant.ca/Dinner.php
  15. I use a straw when I'm drinking soda. Keeps my lipstick from getting all over the glass.
  16. ^I showed one of the guys I'm dating this website and he was like, "My God, there are people who take pictures of FOOD?!!" That's all I needed to know that nothing will come of the relationship.
  17. caramel cheesecake ice-cream (I think the box says "Tin Lizzy"?) the chunks of cheesecake are quite salty...I really like that
  18. I bought a banana-flavoured Kit Kat the other day...took a bite, and then forgot about it. It melted in the sun. It was, however, pretty good (if you like that artificial banana taste...I do!)
  19. ^I'm picturing you saying those words, in gold chains, a retro tracksuit, and a ghetto blaster on your shoulder...*snicker snicker* Actually, on second thought, that visual rather befits your Egullet moniker.

    Dinner! 2005

^Damn! Can't believe I missed those! My friend has a bunch of beers leftover from our BBQ awhile back, and I convinced him to do the beer-can chicken thing too! Can't wait to try that. Last night's dinner was appie pie. I had leftover pastry dough so I decorated my pie with pastry leaves.
  21. Based on the descriptions alone, my favourite would have to be the Chocolate Noir. I'm kicking myself for not making it to lunch mafia on Friday now. The Campari-Litchi sounds really interesting too...I love the floral taste of lychees, but I don't think I've tasted it in a dessert yet.
  22. My experience is that many places won't cook it any other way than "well done" even if you ask them to. Our experience last night at Feenie's however would indicate that a med-rare burger is allowable ... either that or I just bought Chef Feenie a mess of trouble. Ironically I received my burger slightly-pinkish, yet I was never asked how I wanted it cooked. Damned if you do ... ← On the menu, it says that the burger is served medium. so I guess it's OK to serve a burger that's slightly pink in Vancouver after all?
  23. On Watermark's menu: • Beef hamburger with lettuce, tomato, house mayo on a toasted walnut and onion bun ($11.95) Another $12 burger here. I wonder if it will give the (quite tasty) burger at Feenie's a run for it's money.
