  1. One of the nastiest snacks I've had were little waffle sandwich crackers (each about the size of a quarter) with cheese.  Sort of like Ritz Bits, only wafflier.  It was such an odd concept that I had to try them; but as any sensible person could have told me in advance, it was also a mistake.  They were tiny gut bombs: extremely salty, with a pronounced chemical taste in the "cheese", and greasy as hell.  Ugh.

Wise's Cheez Waffies? PMS 'must' food.

  2. Not only is jasmine tea hard to find in stores, it usually tastes like gak! . I buy a loose jasmine from my local healthy-food co-op store.

    Oops- you're very welcome!

and thank you again, that Stash Jasmine Tea is excellent.

  3. Not on par with many of the others mentioned here but I always do enjoy Mystic Pizza.

Yes, I just caught that on cable last week for the first time in years and it's one of the VERY FEW movies that makes me miss the '80's. The other is Crossing Delancey.

  4. You whiners!  If you had Cool Whip, you had it good.

We had "Dream Whip".  It came in a freakin' box, fer cryin' out loud!

now.....Cool Whip i hated, but Dream Whip I LOVED.

BUT only in its powder form, i'd eat the contents of a packet in one sitting. That and Coffee Mate.

  5. Check out their clearance stuff at their site. They have some good deals right now. I am a fool for their double Bergamot Earl Grey. Has anyone tried Good Earth original ?

Thank you, just stocked up on Jasmine Tea (why is that so hard to find in stores) AND the closeout holiday chai. yum.

  6. My Mom once accidentally subtituted powdered sugar for flour in a recipe for potato soup. The results were interesting.

My mom once accidentally subbed cayenne pepper for paprika on roasted potatoes. Frustrating because her roasted potatoes are delicious.

  7. I am rereading an old favorite - More Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin.  I love her description of lime pickle in this book, and I keep meaning to try it but never have!

my two favorite books ever....but be careful with the lime pickle! definitely an acquired taste...

"The best thing I ever tasted: the secret of food"

halfway through that, Fast Food Nation is up next...

  8. The best part of the angel food cake episode was not the cinnamon/cocoa addition to the canned vanilla frosting (could anything be more disgusting?) or the canned apple filling dumped in the middle of the kwanzaa cake, but the fake pearl necklace wrapped around the BLUE hannukah cake. With the wiry blue pearl Star of David plunked on top. hilarious.

  9. I do agree that Total greek yogurt is a completely different experience, although the fat content of the regular is 10%!! It's sooo good with honey. (It's plain yogurt) Some stores also have the 5% and the 2% which are not as unctious but good as well.

Mmmm.....the Total full fat is wonderful, but at 20g of fat per package, yowza. and their 0% fat version is delicious enough that you don't need to splurge. I love it with Sarabeth's Peach-Apricot spooned in.

  10. more former MIL bad meals:

The summer weekend with awful cold cuts ("$1 per pound!) and the macaroni salad made with store brand mayo and (ick) sweet pickle juice. Nothing else. Grilled zucchini topped with bottled red wine 'vinaigrette' dressing. I ate a lot of peanut butter that weekend.

The chicken grilled with some bottled "grill" marinade. Thank goodness for Rice a Roni.

the funny thing is I grew up eating true american-italian food, but I have always had this fasination with

"white" cookery--especially spaghetti that was sweet with ground beef mushed it. I know its bad. But I love it.

Same here; I mentioned Rice a Roni, I sort of envied what i called 'rice a roni / shake and bake' households because i had a fascination with that sort of food. I wanted spaghettios so badly that when my mother broke down and bought it for us, even though I immediately understood that my food was better, i still craved Chef Boyardee. Later on, when on my own, my fascination turned to frozen convenience foods. Lean Cuisine and the like....I got over that quickly....

  11. Why did they discontinue Wavy Gravy? Wasn't that wildly popular?

My very first experience with B&J: my first semester of college, 9/84, way upstate NY in the Adirondacks. My roommate and i hit a small general store several miles off campus. We buy a pint of a strange ice cream in a maroon container called White Russian. I loved white russians so i'm captivated by the ice cream. we get back to our dorm, i taste one spoonful....I say 'uh oh' and i hand the pint to my roommate. She tastes one spoonful, says 'oh my god' and hands the pint to our male friend.. He eats the entire pint within five minutes.

and sugar plum! i loved that, but i think i was the only one....

  12. Are President's Choice "The Decadent" chocolate chip cookies available in the US?

President's Choice used to be available at D'Agostino's Supermarkets in NYC and i loved everything. The ginger snaps were the best ever, very spicy; the lemon sandwich cookies were delicious...i was very upset when i couldn't buy them there anymore.

I miss pepperidge farm's Molasses Crisp.
