  1. Plastic is better for this project: SPOOKY Hands! Curlz - we'll call the distributors on Monday. They probably come in wholesale counts of a bazillion. If we have extra, you are welcome to them Bill
  2. I am looking for a retail source for the plain plastic baggie gloves for my wife - the ones used in fast food restaurants. (That sounds far more sinister than it is - it is for a children's halloween project.) Anyone know where I can find them in Bergen County? Many thanks, Bill
  3. My wife and I were there in September for our anniversary. The food was very good and well-presented, the server was a bit over eager and intrusive and the AC was broken - we were in the back room which gets pretty hot. We also brought along not quite the right wine - a risk with BYO - I should have called ahead to get the menu sent. A good dining experience but not did not enjoy it as much as a few years ago. Again, this is probably unduly colored by the lack of available tables outside and AC inside and my poor wine choice.
  4. La Plage, Wading River A good ways from Greenport but we have had several excellent meals here.

    pear pie

Pear pie is my all-time favorite They do - my wife has a great recipe from a Williams & Sonoma Pies cookbook - the trick is to add a couple of teaspoons of brandy - makes a big diff. Otherwise it is just like apple pie (I would post the recipe but I'm at work and the book is at home. I will look for it tonite - if it not too late, I will send it to you. Google Pear Pie Brandy seems to bring up some good ones) Bill
  7. We had our wedding there 10 years and 361 days ago - but who is counting? (and no, I don't know where I am taking her for dinner...either The Jefferson or Anthony David) It is a very nice space, the people there were very helpful and they work very well with outside caterers. I think, however, it would be really tight for 250. Please do check with them - we had a wonderful experience there. Bill PS if you do go there and they give you a scaled plan with little table templates to cut out, I made that for them
  8. Attractive individual male or female walking with a sandwich board two large pieces of bread with prominent grill marks. Front says in the say typeface as the store name "Let me make you..." or "Indulge yourself" Back says "Melt! 581 Jersey Ave" I would think that there must be a straving artist in JC that would work for free sandwiches and artfully paint some plywood.
  9. There was a Farrell's down the road from where I grew up. We went there for birthday parties, dinner and ice cream if we got good grades, after the school Christmas concert, etc. I have very fond memories - and apparently a lot of other people do too... I love the video clips on this site Farrell's - Santa Clarita
  10. Veering off topic, much to the chagrin of the admins... There is no such thing as a vodka (or apple or chocolate and on and on) martini...it's like a bourbon margarita.
  11. T: You? Picky? I remember when you would pick Moon and KP would pick Bonham.... Above the Salt has a store in Franklin Lakes Above the Salt Please keep in mind that our wedding was 11 years ago (and 25 lbs, mostly because of EGlutton) - I expect that the people that offended our sensibilities at the wedding are long since gone. Sandy reminded me that we used Epicure for my son'd baptism - we did that at the house and the food was incredible. We didn't hire anyone for the day but we should have. Epicure
  12. T: We used Above the Salt for our wedding at the Ridgewood Women's Club. The food was delicious, BUT the staff they provided were royal annoyances that my ever forgiving wife still complains about 11 years later. Bill
  13. At Dragon Palace, you will not be the only English speaker to point and say "I'll have what she's having." The eggplant stew is fantastic. I don't know the names of most of the things I've eaten there, but I have never left hungry or without a smile. I have chided the owner to fix the menu and he said that he was working on it. Bill
  14. John - the breadth and depth of your knowledge is at once awe-inspiring and artery clogging. I am waiting for the John the Hot Dog Guy documentary "SuperDog Me" "A modest man with an all consuming passion for sausage eats nothing but hot dogs for a month, just like every other month of the year" The critics hail this cinematic all-you-can eat buffet: "I watched it with relish." - Roger Ebert "My next film is Bowling for Bratwurst" - Michael Moore "Can't talk...eating. Need to wipe my moustache" - Gene Shalit
  15. If you are willing to venture a bit off Rt 1, LouCas is excellent for lunch - BYO - and reasonably priced. We take clients there regularly. http://www.loucasrestaurant.com/ Ming and Moghul do lunch as well. http://www.moghul.com/edison/index.html http://www.mingrestaurants.com/contactus.htm Bill
  16. Actually, it's White Diamond in Clark - I assume you mean at Raritan and Central Aves., right? ← Yes - my mistake.
  17. Unless there's another one, the White Rose SYSTEM is in Highland Park! And yes, I remember them being quite delicious, esp after a late night out...! ← There's White Rose System in Highland Park and White Star just off the GSP at Exit 135. I am often stuck trying to decide which will grace my palate. I think that White Star is better tasting, but taste of a White Rose burger stays with you longer. Love the Cali burgers from both - the fried egg makes them special
  18. Anyone been to Anthony Wayne in Wayne/Totowa right next to Fountains of Wayne? I keep meaning to stop there but I am usually in the wrong lane of what can only be described as the Gordian Knot of NJ crossroads - 46 & 23.
  19. I love White Castle dearly - there is one around the corner from my office and I go far more often then my wife will ever know. I love the way they taste all day long. I love White Star, White Rose, White Manna - I love chili dogs and texas weiners and Rutt's special relish. Holly Moore and Calvin Trillin are role models and constant sources of inspiration. I know, here, I am not alone in these sentiments. The right business to be in Tagamet and Mylanta.
  20. My Irish grandmother could boil the bejeezus out of anything, but you could always taste the love. My wife can cook like a mad woman - she makes the corned beef with an orange marmalade glaze and roasted glazed sweet potatos. Cabbage (lots of salt and pepper) and well boiled potatos (boil them, drain and then put back on the heat low to evap out the last bits of the boiling water) with lots of butter. Homemade warm buttermilk Irish soda bread (the trick is to soak the raisins in hot water first and to mix the golden and regular raisins) with a glob of melting butter and maybe a bit of jam. Oh yeah, and some Guinness. And Harp. And Black Bush (to cut the butter and thin the blood). I only want this once a year, but I do want it. (Next time, I will try not to speak so parenthetically)
  21. Trackside - was there two weeks ago after seeing a movie in Suffern (Shameless plug - I love the Lafayette Theater there - beautiful interior, live organ music befort the show, classic films on Sat. afternoons - www.bigscreenclassics.com). Brady's/Trackside was packed at 10:30pm with a big dinner business and a crowded bar. We were at the bar and it was loud and smoky, or I am getting old. Probably more the latter than the former.
  22. We just finished a big pot roast that started simmering in the slow cooker on the first Accuweather prediction of snow. Lots of gravy and veggies spooned over buttered egg noodles. The lights turned out, only candles on the table, the four of us watching out the back window as the yard is covered in white. Nice bottle of table red to go with it. Kids are just getting stories read to them. I'm warm from the wine - no sense in wasting it getting cold shovelling. Maybe a movie under a blanket with wife tonite on the couch. Tomorrow - french toast with good challah and bacon and then snowtubing.
  23. That looks great Glenn! We, being me, the wife and kids and the whole gang at work, cannot wait to come by and sample the wares. The one behind the counter with the big cheesy grin will be you. (Actually, Big Cheesy Grins is NOT a bad slogan...) This place is SCREAMIN' Egullet Roadtrip. Regards Bill
  24. Can anyone recommend a location for a familty reunion picnic? This "little" gathering has swelled from a modest 20-30 to more than one hundred - far more than my little 3 bedroom ranch can handle. Specifically, we are looking for a place that will let us bring in food and beer and have enough room for kids running around, games, etc. The time is likely the end of July, early August. Northern, central and west central NJ are all good as would lower western Rockland county. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. As always, many thanks. Bill
  25. Tommy- I am all together too familiar with the parking vagaries of the Boken, having lived there for years and years. Kept running into the strangest acquaintances - usually at Boo-Boos at 2am or the PATH at 3am or the Spa at 4am. Amongst all my other fuzzy memories, I also have fuzzy memories of not remembering where the hell I parked by car - was it Willow or Clinton? I was in your current hometown on Saturday and it was not a whole lot better. The NYT put it correctly when they referred to that town as "68 restaurants and 69 parking spaces." Dinner - Tuesday, 3 wks before Christmas - I say head in the opposite direction of Rte 4 & 17 - AAG - always a great choice. Ruga in Oakland - Ate at the bar a few months ago - very tasty. Has improved immeasurably under new ownership. Bill
