  1. I'm doing the Mediterranean Fish Stew for Christmas dinner next week, but could be interested in another J&J dinner. My mother-in-law is here for the week, so I'll have someone to keep the kids out of the kitchen.
  2. Sounds delicious. I may have to make it for Christmas brunch.
  3. Is every new place going to be a chain? It'll be just like Rockville.

    Dinner! 2003

I reccomend letting that white shirt become her pomegranate shirt, or throwing the whole shirt in juice and dying it. It is very difficult to get out, althought I am sure some Heloise or another here on egullet might have a few hints Uh oh. And it was a brand new shirt too. Well, word to the wise...never sit your 4-year-old down with a pomegranate as a snack.
  5. I always give out my recipes, or if it's from a book, tell which book. Maybe they will make it for someone who likes it enough to ask for the recipe. But then again, I'm not a famous cookbook author. And many many of our family recipes came from Ladies Home Journal or the like.

    Dinner! 2003

Emma ate half a pomegranate yesterday. Does the juice come out of clothing? She got it all over her white shirt. Tonight's dinner: Roast chicken with onion and rosemary shoved inside. About to go in the oven. Mashed potatoes. Big green salad. More homemade vanilla cupcakes.

    Dinner! 2003

Wed night: Flank steak dumped in the slow cooker with about a cup of low sodium V-8 type juice. I sliced and shredded the meat after cooking so that it made a sort of ragu. Brown rice pilaf. Brown rice, diced onion and carrot, thyme, chicken broth. Ian gobbled this up. Sliced roasted zucchini. Homemade vanilla cupcakes with buttercream and cake glitter. The glitter was Emma's request.
  8. ...and thanks to guajolote for reminding me about it. =R= You're gonna love it, Ronnie. Try the potato salad with dill, capers, and fresh orange juice, marinated at room temp. It's like a cool summer breeze in the middle of winter.
  9. Swankalicious started this thread October 24. Is two months not enough time?
  10. Add some diced red pepper and it would look very "seasonal" I got a pomegranite yesterday...maybe a few pomegranite seeds for garnish? Fish curry for us tonight, and a trip to the asian market this afternoon. Some fresh holy basil and lime leaf would be nice for the herbs in the recipe.
  11. Click here for a depressing article on the cult of the consumer.
  12. Thanks Erin, I was going to post the same but couldn't remember where I had seen the info. Was it in the Post this week?
  13. I don't know if any, but if you find some please post the location.
  14. That's great, but like I said, we're taking this as our chance to celebrate our anniversary without the kids, and wanted to hear what others were doing as inspiration - not get a lecture about how overhyped it is.
  15. While the Wolfert book sounds great, I will not have enough time to spend on "slow" food for the next 2-3 weeks. I looked up the green curry fish and bought some cod today. And we may be cooking the Mediterranean Fish Stew for Christmas dinner since there will only be four of us.
  16. Wow, Mike. That sounds really awful.
  17. It used to be as good as it gets around here but that was some time ago, pre MCI center. Now there are dozens of better, more interesting Chinese restaurants in the suburbs. There's a huge new tapas restaurant right across the street from MCI but the name escapes me. That might have been a less boring choice.
  18. Were they boring, or poorly executed? Eat First used to be our favorite restaurant in Chinatown, but that was before they closed for a time and moved to a new location. We don't go much anymore, mostly because we moved to Rockville and there's good places to go out here. Still it's disappointing to think that they have gone downhill.

    Dinner! 2003

Brined, broiled pork chops with some of the cranberry/dried cherry compote leftover from Thanksgiving. Steamed cauliflower and broccoli. This was the sweetest cauliflower I've ever had. Soudough baguette with some olive oil for dipping.
  20. That sounds good to me too. I printed Bittman's recipe this morning after Bloviatrix posted about it on the dinner thread. I love prunes and thought it looked interesting.
  21. Perhaps Citronelle might be a good choice for dinner, if it's not completely booked.
  22. I haven't been out for New Year's Eve in probably 10 years. Before kids we always had a party for all of our friends. But, since my mom is watching the kids and we didn't get a chance to celebrate our 5th anniversary back in September, I was thinking a nice dinner might be in order, and then back home in time to watch Dick Clark.
  23. Fruitcake, at least the kind with the day-glo candied fruit.
  24. We have a babysitter for the 31st, for the first time since our daughter was born. We're thinking of going out to dinner but can't figure out where. Chances are pretty good that a lot of places are booked already, but it can't hurt to make some phone calls, right? So, I thought I would ask the board - where are you going to ring in the new year?

    Dinner! 2003

Seth, what kind of beer did you use? I made this last weekend with Guinness and while it was really really good, the beer overpowered the beef a little. heather guiness works better with more than just meat and onions. i use it when i make a beef stew(course we're down to 4 1/2 cases of the big cans right now) - chuck, onions, parsnips, carrots, onions, garlic, rutabaga, some green beans the last 15 - 20 minutes. Thanks, I'll give that a try next time. I was loosely following a recipe for Carbonnade and it didn't call for anything else.
