  1. Thanks for the advice, everyone. I have a whetstone, but just don't have the touch to sharpen my own knives. Plus, anything I do in the kitchen is done with a three year old standing on a chair next to me...not so good for playing with knives. Maybe I will give Sur La Table a try.
  2. I'm not sure if this is right place for this question but I wanted to ask some locals...Does anyone know a good place in the DC area, preferably Montgomery County, to get knives honed? I have been trying to find a decent place, and have struck out a couple of times already. We've tried Chesapeake Knife and Tool, but my knives come back as if they had just run them through an electric sharpener a few times.
  3. I too was very surprised to learn that Chipotle was a MCDonalds-owned company. I don't think that McD's started the chain - just bought them when they started to become profitable. It isn't bad for fast food; we often stop there when we're out and we need to feed our daughter ASAP. I always order mine with no rice, but I was impressed that the cilantro-lime rice was made with actual cilantro and lime juice. The pork is the best option, but the beef isn't bad either, and I thought the salsa and guacamole were pretty good for fast food. I used to go to a place called the Burro, but I think they are now defunct. Burrito Brothers is pretty good and offers all the standard fast-food burrito options. They have a location just north of Dupont Circle and a few others in the Wash DC area.
  4. Absolutely! My husband likes to cook steak at home, but even with the exhaust fan going full-blast my house still smells like meat for days afterward. Makes me long for a professional range hood...
  5. The last time we ate at the DC Les Halles the frites were very disappointing, soggy and bland, and my steak (hanger) was overcooked. It had been a couple of years since we had eaten there so I'm not sure if it's gone downhill or we were there on an off day. For a $100 lunch I was expecting more.
  6. I've had the paella at the original location several times and would advise you to stick to the tapas. The spinach with raisins and pine nuts, and the octopus are my favorites.
  7. Hi everyone, a newbie here. I had to jump in on this thread when I saw you comment about Rockville. I agree that it's pizza hell. There's no place to go, and no decent delivery. We make do with a local place called Giuseppe's. I used to live a block from Pizza Paradiso. Boy do I miss that neighborhood.
  8. What's her recipe? Are they cakey or fudgey? My absolute favorite brownie recipe is from Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin called "Katherine Hepburn's brownies." They're fudgey and perfect for a wet winter day.
