  1. Firefly is close by Dupont: Firefly Thread
  2. J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B Minor, BWV 1067 (c. 1735) "Badinerie"
  3. Really? We've never been, but I thought it was a local red tablecloth place. It's a local cafeteria style chain. They have 6 locations, including one near my office. I've been a couple of times-- nothing to get excited about really, but not bad. Mamma Lucia
  4. There is no way I would ever eat fried chicken from any of these places! That being said, if you bring me some and once I get hit with that fried chickeny smell, my face and fingers will be a greasy mess in no time.
  5. Well put. Certainly applies to me. Now I have a $200 a day foie gras habit.
  6. I'm a big fan of the various cheap frozen burritos. In order to incorporate some food snobbery into making them, I never microwave. Always use the oven and add a slice of cheddar on top at the end. Also, those frozen pierogies-- with good EVOO and any fresh herbs I have around. Ah, the luxuries of the bachelor life.
  7. That's really interesting - whenever I hear a steak referred to as "black and blue", it means Pittsburgh rare, charred black and crusty on the outside and cool and practically raw on the inside (my preferred temp for NY strips). It's the first time I've seen it used to refer to a steak with peppercorns and blue cheese. Cute. I guess Michael-not-Ray is quite the wordplay enthusiast. Me too. I thought it meant rarer than rare.
  8. My best friend is hosting Passover this year, and I'm going to go for my first Seder. I do quite a lot of cooking for him and his wife, and have often been responsible for most of the food at a few dinner parties we've thrown (usually to great success). Well now I'm on the hook for the brisket. I feel kinda like I'm in charge of making the turkey for Thanksgiving having never had it before. I mean, I've used brisket before when BBQing, but this is different. It seems to me there may be certain expectations about what a Passover brisket dish should be. So I'd like your feedback. What do you think of this recipe? Do you see any pitfalls or have any advice? I'm confident I can prepare this dish well, I just want to make sure everyone will be happy with it. Thanks! BRISKET WITH DRIED APRICOTS, PRUNES, AND AROMATIC SPICES
  9. Good suggestion. Litteri's is a gem of a place in a sketchy neighborhood, and the prices are very reasonable. Good spot to stock up on olive oils, vinegars, pasta.
  10. Doubt it, but you could always go a block up the street to BdC where cigar smoking seems to be encouraged.
  11. I had my first Epoisse last week. A freakin revelation! Thanks to eGullet for recommending it!
  12. Is the new Wegman's calming down a bit yet? I hate shopping in huge crowds.
  13. I don't think I've ever been to Club Charles. Is it the kind of place where the best option is to "drink your dinner". Has anyone ever been to Blue Agave on Federal Hill? I tried it a few weeks ago and had some of the best Mexican food I've had on the East Coast. Numerous margaritas and a pitcher of sangria obscures the details of my meal, but I remember being impressed.
  14. McCormick & Schmick's eh? I'll go there tonight and check out this happy hour deal. Thanks for the tip!
  15. You kinda lost me on this one Mr Rocks. The Miracle Whip issue just isn't on the same scale as your analogy of the lights coming on to illuminate the horror of finding what I presume to be something along the lines of your grandmother, or your father-in-law, or perhaps a highly skilled and shaved orangutan. It would be more akin to the lights coming up and seeing a pimple on the nose of an otherwise attractive lover. You were enjoying that breakfast. I say get the recipe!
  16. I'm suffering from this too. I think I need a vacation.
  17. I've had my fill (actually "fill" is the wrong word) of food festivals-- especially the ones held on Pennsylvania Ave and 12th. You stand in line for your half a dixie cup of chili/bbq/noodles or whatever the festival of the day is. Then you stand in another line to buy tickets for the privilege of standing in yet another line to get overpriced warm beer. I don't believe I've ever sampled anything that was even close to being worth the hassle.
  18. I was there for a couple of those Dead Guys Friday night after work. I saw someone at the bar get their pepperoni pizza. It really looked dark-- part of the rim of the crust was black and many of the pepperonis looked browned and crisped too much. Maybe a new guy is manning the oven?
  19. I believe Tunnicliff's at Eastern Market has new management and/or a new chef. I've been there for brunch a couple of times in the last few weeks and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The Eggs Benedict with Crab was perfect except for the overly hard and crunchy English muffin underneath. Good Bloody Marys too!
  20. Errr.... I swear, I was just scanning the bottles and the prices and that seemed to be one of the more egregious examples.
  21. Don't buy ANY alcohol in Montgomery County. There should be a boycott. How much is the tax there? I saw a bottle of Beringer White Zin for $10! Not that I'd drink the stuff, but shouldn't that be less than $6?
  22. Let us know when!
  23. what does a wegman taste like? It's Wegman's flavored oil, not Wegman flavored oil. The difference in meaning is that in the first, Wegman is the person doing the flavoring, in the second Wegman is the flavor. Wow. Silly me, I was just going to let the bad joke slide. Thanks for backing me up with a strong case of English 101 whoopass. Does Wegman's sell cans of whoopass?
  24. what does a wegman taste like?
  25. We need the recipe. Monica?
