  1. Big thanks to Chef and Robin, and also our organizers Hillvalley and Babka. We had a great time and enjoyed some wonderful wine at the table with mdt and iamthestretch. Mmmm, meatloaf. Awesome stuff.
  2. I'm not sure I can explain, but falafel is fairly ubiquitous in Amsterdam. Also, from what I remember, it showed up often in the parking lot during the festivities leading up to a Dead show. Coincidence?
  3. I'd like to apologize in advance for attending this evening.
  4. Now if only a certain kind of shop would open which would induce a level of hunger that would facilitate the need to find a good falafel joint.
  5. It provides cover to those with liver disease.
  6. Can I hitch a ride with someone from Firefly to CK? I may be down near Dupont for another back-crackin.
  7. Try the Culatello-- reminds me a little of the Serrano I had in Spain. Went to Cheesetique on Saturday. Nice shop, friendly folks, and it seemed to be getting some steady business. The "Pete's" bleu from MN is excellent too. I'm waiting for the Taleggio (serious stink factor) to come to room temp for a bite.
  8. I think pastry chef, Sidra,(sp?) of the husband and wife team at Rupperts is consulting with Perry's and revising their menu. I went to Perry's a couple of months ago and had an enjoyable meal. Not great, but not bad either.
  9. Welcome to eGullet, poolboy! My gf's family is friends with the former owners of Rupperts. I wish I had known about the place when it was around, I would have definitely gone.
  10. Lets just get a keg. I ran into a fellow eGulleteer at Firefly last night and we discussed a pre-meal bar outing. Any ideas? John W. offered to pour some wine for us a while back, but I thought perhaps somewhere closer to CO Kitchen would be better. Not much to pick from though... thoughts?
  11. terrifically tantalizing thread!
  12. Taco Bell. Bean burrito-- lotsa hot sauce.
  13. I'm going to make a whacky recommendation. Meyhane on Pennsylvania Ave. Turkish food-- and on Saturday nights they have BELLY DANCING. The wine list pretty much blows, but the food is surprisingly good. There are a lot of veggie options and it's a fun atmosphere. The place has good bang for the buck-- and what's more romantic than a phrase like that?
  14. I gotta hang out at Palena more often...
  15. I'll have to swing by this place Saturday!
  16. A restaurant here in DC that has since been renovated used to have urinals that were about 4 ft off the ground. Approximately anyway. I think you'd have to be 8 feet tall to use one properly, or extremely... gifted, shall we say. Basically, you'd have to stand back, aim upwards, and hope for the best.
  17. How did this thread resurface? Well, anyway, I'm going to get my back cracked by a chiropractor over near Firefly this afternoon. I went to Firefly last week, so I should probably go somewhere else. Hmmmm.
  18. How big will your group be? I think Andale has a better bar area than Cafe Atlantico and usually I've had better bar service there.
  19. Veal cheeks and grits. Order early and often. So here's my, um, naive question for you....is a veal cheek literally what it sounds like? Part of the calf's face?? Also reading it described as "gelatinous", not sure that is something I can put in MY face Yep, it's what it sounds like. And, properly prepared, it's delicious. Try it.
  20. It's one of those things that sounds simple, but with access to this many opinions (and great ones too!), you'll get ideas that you hadn't considered. If you asked how to boil water you'd probably get MORE than 2 pages. Which is a good thing... Thanks to all for the info. I'll try and post pics of the slabs of meat next week. I've got 2 three to four pound USDA Prime T-bone's on order. How does Mr Balic say? Ah yes, a big fuck off T-bone. It'll be served rare as my dining companions... will allow, that is-- I'm ready for it freakin RAW. Good olive oil shall be drizzled, lemon wedges served, but I think I'll put the rosemary and shaved parm reggiano on the side. I may very well burn those rosemary stems underneath the steaks-- we'll have some good beans with rosemary to accompany. I can taste it already...
  21. A friend of mine swears by the yellow cake. The CIA swears by the yellow cake too. Or at least they used to.
  22. Andale?
  23. I did something similar. Added a nice dab of butter on top of the steak too.
  24. I've been there. Pretty decent food, but not memorable. Anyhow, their website says they were established in 1770. Supposedly, the original G Dubya dined there on his birthday way back when. I went there for a wedding once and had the food. Definitely not memorable.
