  1. Is this the place you're talking about?
  2. That's the kind of confusion I can handle -- I take you've experience with this? ← Well, not directly -- I currently have a 2003 Kenmore that was manufactured by Frigidaire, and it's been ROCK solid. Based on that, I would have no problem recommending a Frigidaire. Also, be sure to check out the Appliance Forum at GardenWeb/That Home Site. A good amount of Frigidaire fans, and a good amount of GE haters...
  3. Just to add to your confusion, here's another range to add to the mix: Frigidaire 30 in. Gas Self-Clean Freestanding Range , $800 at Sears
  4. well, at least they managed to keep this place off the list...
  5. My last three: 1) El Taco Nazo in La Puente -- 3 fish tacos, 2 potato tacos, and I could've scarfed down more, but the wife was looking at me... 2) Um's Tofu in Gardena -- You don't want to go here, it's very bad, stay away! 3) Al Noor in Lawndale -- As I've mentioned elsewhere, the best Indian food in Artesia can be found at a Pakistani restaurant in Lawndale...
  6. Something just dawned on me while I read your post: Are there male Korean waiters? I've been in quite a few Korean establishments over the years, and it just hit me, I think I've only been served by females. Am I wrong?
  7. Sounds like an I.V. would work better for you.
  8. Would like to give a heads-up on a gin sale -- Plymouth 750ml, this week only at Hows Market, only 16 bucks! Unfortunately this market has only 5 locations in the Los Angeles area, but hopefully someone in the area can benefit from this sale. I know I will...
  9. When was your last visit to the UK? It sounds like the marketing boys at AWOL really did their homework...
  10. Pie in the Pokey! Sounds like Mayberry...
  11. I wish I could remember the source where I got this recommendation, but I must've put it in my address book for a good reason: Pho Y 1660 E. Capitol Expwy. San Jose, CA 95121 408-274-1769 For my last trip up north, I distilled everything down to a "best of" list. This is the one pho place that remained. Anyone in the area, please chime in if you happen to know if it is, or was, good. Always culling the list...
  12. I'm curious how others are going to weigh in on this issue. Is this a common phenomena, the maturing/developing/changing of a liquor blend over the years. Do companies frequently tweak their blends or brews? I mean, I know they do, but is it a slow evolutionary process? Do they come to work one day, and BAM! I'd like to throw another brand out there for consideration -- Johnnie Walker Red. Has this blend changed significantly over the years? I haven't tried it in over 15 years, and back then I thought it was garbage (but I was a snobby punk then), but it placed well in a recent tasting. Makes me think that something has changed, or my tastebuds were just too young 10 years ago...
  13. Hrrmm. Sounds like your friends need to "man up" a bit. When I drink my wine out of a juice glass, I like to pretend that I'm Michael Corleone sitting with my comrades in Sicily, shotguns laid out on the table...
  14. I doubt it. The two best known Chinese Islamic restaurants in the SGV serve northern (Beijing) based Islamic food. Uyghur cuisine is more central/western Asian, although I've never had it so who knows what they're sneaking by on the menu... Anyway, out of the two restaurants, I prefer China Islamic. A la carte is better, and the bread is superior. Tung Lai Shun is good for a preset menu for eight people or so, but the a la carte is kinda weak. China Islamic is a bit divey, while Tung Lai Shun is a bit upscale (as compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area). China Islamic Restaurant 7727 E. Garvey Ave. Rosemead, CA 91770 Tung Lai Shun 140 W. Valley Blvd. San Gabriel, CA 91776 P.S. to the Locals: Anybody know if T.L.S. is still in business? They're not popping up on the Dept. of Health website.
  15. Just a few hours ago I spotted a new blended scotch at Trader Joes -- $8.99 for 1 liter (not 750ml). It was a lame name, can't recall it now. Doesn't appear to be in their current flyer. But hey, how many 9 dollar bottles of scotch are there? On a side note, I recently tried their house label single malt scotch. $18 for 750ml. It was just ok. Thought it might be a nice way to economize, and still treat myself to a single malt. Just not worth it in the end...
  16. Not sure what's going on: http://www.crossbridgepublishing.com/author.htm Or who's correct: http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo...ll=la-home-food
  17. I'm a massive pie fan. I've sampled pies from coast to coast, and find that most chain pies (Marie's, Hof's, Polly's) are just OK most of the time. Other times, they're garbage. If I'm not making a pie from scratch, I buy a Mrs. Smith's Deep Dish Apple pie. Yes, a pie from the grocery freezer section. I've tried all the frozen pies (and those chain pies), and this is thee absolute best. If there is a pie shootout in the future, all I ask is that you include one of these bad boys -- I guarantee that it'll throw all of the results off...
  18. A Blood Alcohol Content chart (available from your local DMV) clearly illustrates that: one 12 ounce beer = one 5 ounce glass of wine = one 1.5 ounce shot of "hard" liquor I've got a problem with people who disregard this information, claim that a couple shots of tequila will make them "crazy," but can polish off a 6-pack (or 12-pack) of beer over a 2 hour period with "no problems." Of course, this doesn't explain why a martini makes my toes numb.
  19. In case anyone is interested, the 2004 Brown Spirits winners from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (flash site) can be found here. I realize it's just another competition (and a short-lived one at that), but I found the following noteworthy: DOUBLE GOLD BEST BOURBON - Old Forester Small Batch Bourbon, Kentucky, USA ($15) GOLD Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Kentucky, USA ($12) Virginia Gentleman Small Batch Bourbon, USA ($20) SILVER Jim Beam Black Label Bourbon, Kentucky, USA ($18) Knob Creek Small Batch Bourbon, Kentucky, USA ($26) Van Winkle Family Reserve Single Barrel American Whiskey, Kentucky, USA ($85) BRONZE Basil Hayden's Small Batch Bourbon, Kentucky, USA ($32) Jim Beam White Label Bourbon, Kentucky, USA ($13) Maker's Mark Small Batch Bourbon, Kentucky, USA ($20) Old Forester Straight Bourbon, Kentucky, USA ($12)
  20. Well, I have to agree with you on Malibu -- it's kind of like drinking Coppertone. I might have had the drink once since that trip to Japan some 15 years ago. Some things are better when not revisited...
  21. I've been reminiscing lately (well, ever since I came across this particular board) about drinks I've had outside the U.S., but never seem to find when at home. Anyone else have a favorite from abroad? I'll start it off with two "summer" drinks: Malibu Milk Popular in Japan, goes down way too easily, an acquired taste? 1 part Malibu Rum 2 parts Milk (this sounds about right) Serve on the rocks Portonic Apertif, very refreshing, sneaks up on you... 1 part White port 1 part Tonic water Serve on the rocks, with lemon or lime
  22. Ah, great minds shop alike! I'm always searching for things that offer great bang-for-the-buck, yet aren't crap. Evan Williams sure ain't crap. Better than some at twice the price (750 ml, of course). Thanks for the heads up!
