  1. definitly. jack was 30 minutes late when we were there and i am sure we could have had two courses rather than the one we ended up having in the time. all this said, i didn't think the food was great, but it did remind me of the ivy (but without the slebs) for a meal that i didn't really enjoy at the time, i find myself wanting to go back. very odd.
  2. how did i miss this one before... 16. Ban table turning.
  3. wolesley? might be worth a look if you like the ivy.
  4. i misread this as bourdain and was totally flummoxed for a moment.
  5. 9. Ban "suppliments" for dishes on set menus If we storm leeds and eat through the yorkshire pudding walls we need to save a space for the sausage gates. And wear a hat in case they pour boiling gravy on us.
  6. 1. No more empty "tip" sections on credit card slips when the restaurant has charged you a 12.5% service charge 2. All burgers to be automatically served with the gubbins ON THE SIDE so i can gussy my burger up the way I want it 3. An end to the supermarket hegemony of our produce so I cannot buy strawberries at Christmas Would anyone add anything else?
  7. i thought the priory looked like an all bar one.
  8. nothing against them at all, but i have a bit of a blind spot with mushrooms. i just end up with button mushrooms!
  9. moby, how was the first box? farmaround have come up trumps for me. oyster mushrooms (which i would never buy, so i am very excited by these) onions, carrots, potatoes, courgettes, a HUGE box of green beans, tomatoes, aubergine and a couple of things i can't remember. the fruit bag had strawberries, pears, apples, oranges and a grapefruit. with the eggs, water and juice i feel well set up for the weekend!
  10. andy, you know i'm the founding member of the islington ladies temperance society. i did manage to throw a glass of water over one of my dinner companions, but i wasn't drunk, just excited.
  11. i think you can find that so called "high end" restaurants can sometimes be a bit morgue-like. places where people have very high expectations and go expecting a shrine to gastronomy. el bulli springs to mind. i think this was why i liked the fat duck so much. people were getting outrageusly drunk and were loving every minute of it. and i was there for sunday lunch.
  12. if we could get blind lemon higgins to post, we'd have a garnish as well.
  13. i now work about 35 metres away from the rock and sole plaice and went their yesterday. after i'd picked at my meal i checked the sign outside as i couldn't believe that this could have been the same plaice ;-) the chips were soggy in parts and pointy crisp* in others, my haddock appeared to be wearing a jacket, and not a velour smoking jacket, no, a donkey jacket made out of hay and all my colleagues had cod so i had to keep whispering "save the cod, save the cod" whenever the conversation lulled. the only good thing was the mushy peas. so, let me check, is the rock and sole plaice you all speak of on endell street in high holborn and was i in an imposter chipshop? *technical term for what happens when chips are unevenly cut and are then fried and they become thin and glasslike in parts
  14. Spurred on by Janice, Jack and I went last night. I'm not sure about the room, it has huge windows but they overlook a mini building site on one side and a newsagent on the other. It sruck me as the sort of space that should probably be a bar rather than a restaurant. Luckily the food is definitly restaurant standard. I think I've posted positive reviews about Moro about 20 times on here so I was really expecting to like this place. I wasn't expecting to love it though! The menu really excited me and I was torn between four starters and three mains. I tend to find that the starters are more interesting at Moro, but this isn't true at the Zetter. We ended up eating English asparagus with fried egg and parmesan and sardine with wild asparagus to begin. Jack's asparagus had been cooked a shade too long but my wild asparagus was a revelation (even if i did get butter on my beautiful new dry clean only top) Mains were even better. I had roasted loin of white spot pork. The pork (a special of the day) had been rolled with bay leaves and was served with a criss cross of crackling on top. On the side was a salad of borlotti beans, radacchio and parsley. The pork was just fantastic, creamy, milky, sweet and juicy. I had died and gone to pork heaven. Jack's t-bone was equally as good, a seriously good piece of meat (not quite up to Luger's standard, but hey, what is?) that was seasoned perfectly. Pudding was beyond us! I loved it all and will return very soon!
  15. Is Zetter the one that's owned by the Moro people?
  16. thanks for all the suggestions guys. am wondering if we could compile an egullet guide to leeds? might be a useful resource. never mind rough guides, give me a gary guide any day.
  17. thinks. is bank holiday monday the best time to go for sushi? prob not.
  18. do you have to book at sushi say? is there anything else of note in ealing? i don't think i posted this before, but i went back to tsunami a couple of weeks ago and the food was great although the service was a bit stretched. the oyster platter, as ever, was amazing and we had some spicy tuna rolls. the hot pot was less good, i think it was beef. this is one of those places where keeping your eyes open and asking what other people are having is very useful...i saw a really interesting scallop dish that looked like it had its own brazier served with it. i can't comment on the sashimi, but i am going to try to go there or sushi say over the bank holiday so i will report back.
  19. i was there about a week before balex and it was still great, went on a sunday and gorged on baby back ribs. i still think the beans are the best thing there though. is that heresy?

    Per Se

cries with jealousy. next time i come to new york, i am eating there. i was so annoyed not to get a table for our last trip.
  21. hummm, we're not there, we're at 42 the calls.
  22. all this talk coupled with a wander around satanburys organic section (why oh why do they not stock any BRITISH organic produce. i've got my save the world hat on and don't want to eat apples that are FLOWN IN FROM NEW ZEALAND. the assistants in there must hate me, i keep badgering them about it) anyway, i have just signed up with Farmaround Organic and am very excited as they not only deliver fruit and veg, but juice, water, eggs, bread and a variety of groceries. hurrah hurrah hurrah. my first box is on thursday, i'll let you know how it goes.
  23. i htink they might be called enoki mushrooms. turns out jack has taken all of your advice gary and we're eating at 3 york place on the friday, anthony's on the saturday and staying at the boutique hotel that completely escapes my mind now. so, other than eat, what does one do in leeds? any recommendations for cocktails? any really fabby shops that i don't want to miss?
  24. don't worry mobes, i took one for the team and had a double portion *especially* for you. all this talk of clamdiggers has made me buy some palourdes clams for supper tonight.
