  1. Oh I forgot about KnifeX. Their prices are very reasonable and they come to your place in their cool van.
  2. Artigiano is in the same building just on the south west corner. I seem to recall.
  3. How can you forget Vancouver's most annoying restauranteur Sam Yehia and Sammy's. He was the guy who wanted to have his people down on the beach taking orders for food and drink. I geuss I remember because Sam and his brother Vic, owner of Doll and Penny's were fellow Sentinel 74 grads. BTW this was before Senor Frog's. Sam did control the lease for years after Sammy's closed. Allegedly!
  4. It's a very questionable location for a fine dining restaurant. Is Artiggiano still in the building? That's got to hurt their casual trade.
  5. As part of any discussion to do with the amount one is willing to spend is the question where does it come on your list of priorities? For me it's after my wife and kids, my secondary family, my dog and cat, my house and golfing. Any money I have after I take care of that list, some of it can buy a nice bottle or two.
  6. Cool Waves. I found the wieght to be Chianti like but it doesn't have that strawberry component.
  7. Ling that is expensive, in my opinion but worthwile. If you don't mind me asking what were they? I have a friend who routinely drinks $50.00+ bottles every night. It's mostly because he thinks he's getting better wine because of the price. It doesn't mean it's the best wine to drink tonight though.
  8. For me, it's got to be Whustof, everything else pales in comparison. I find the Grand Prix series to be an improvment ergonomically over the 3 rivet old school style. I have a Sabatier slicer that is also quite useful. When I went to VCC we all had the Victorinox knives which were sold for reasonable discounts in the book store but they are a Toyota compared to the BMW(Whustof). I have tried both Global and Kershaw knives but they seem better suited to smaller hands then mine. On purchasing try the Gourmet Warehouse. Other then that shop around. Now being a pretty good time.
  9. Just out of curiosity, how much do people think a blow out dinner with wine at West would cost? Although $600 a head is pricey it adds up fast if you are drinking Champagne and bottles of Tua Rita.
  10. Star Anise still exists. I has gone from the hottest place in the city in the 90's to a place that would do 10 to 20 meals on a great night. Both the original owners are long gone.
  11. Cru doesn't seem all that casual to my west coast sensibility. The room is lounge inspired. It is very well decorated, and outrageously comfortable. It would be my choice. Others you may consider would be Parkside, la Regeladde or Chambar. If you want places that look good and are more formal like West or Lumiere be prepared to pay in the $100.00+ a head range. There are elegant places like Gotham or The Beach House but the food is not what these places are about.

  15. My respect for Kintaro is waning. It seems less great every time I go. I can practically make comparable miso ramen at home. I agree with the pho at Kim Phung as well as the Laksa at the Curry Hut or Prata Man.
  16. I don't want to start re quoting all that's already been said about the mark up at this place. I think a very important lesson is to be learned here. The owner probably feels that there is so much buzz around a bottle like the Burrowing Owl and other BC wines like the Larose or the Occulus that less wine savy customers will have heard of them and will be more willing to part with thier coin. Believe me fewer people know of the world class wines that Tua Rita produces. Their three cuvees are amongst the world's finest but their production so small only a true wine geek would be familiar with them.

  19. And the winners are Gourmetgal and Mooshmouse. A friend of mine cooked at Magnolia's while we both went to VCC. We were all very envious, he was our hereo of fine cuisine.
  20. I remeber goingto that place once in the 80's. The room had a giant black grand piano. I think the word sole was in the name, Contented Sole? The place I mean next to the Bayside Room, is on Denman about 15 feet from Davie, upstairs on the east side of the street. It may have been Pepita's at one time but before that it was kind of a 80's "fusion" place.
  21. I just thought of another. The room now occupied by the Pacific Crab Co. A classic upstairs location, next to the Bayside Room. What was the name of the place that did fairly well in thier during the late 80's?
  22. Imagine my horror. One son quickly approaching drinking age with an eye on my cellar. Another who can alway's come up with suggestions like" this is good but it would be better if you added pancetta". Perhap's I have created a couple of monsters who will suck every dollar out of me before I die, or maybe I have found a couple of dining companions who will put up with me until the day they shovel dirt on my cold body. BTW Arne I feel more comfortable talking about this on this board with people I kind of know.   23. I vote for the place inhabited by the Ordinary. In the past it was The Sierra, the Sonoma and Coco's. Probably missed a few. Close second the room where Vintropolis is. Another candidate would be the Cafe de Paris although the name remains the same there seems to be a new owner every year. I hate to mention the room that is now Parkside. It was a Czech place and then Delilah's and then Zeb's.
  24. This place seem's just about counter culture enough for a try. Some one take one for the team. BTW Hell's Kitchen seems to be surviving in one of the most damned locations in the city. Anyone been? For 100 points can anyone name the popular early eighties restaurant that inhabited that location? Or for 200 points the poular Commercial Drive greek place that died a quick death there? Hey I think I'm going to start a new thread about damned locations.
  25. This is what I wished I had said: "This is all-Barossa and a fine example of what the South Australian valley means to shiraz. The nose is super ripe and awash in plummy blackcurrant fruit. You taste the vanilla/oak, and just a hint of mocha together with plenty of spicy, briary fruity undertones. The finish is typical Oz with that shot of acidity to keep it lively in the back of the throat. You can drink or hold this one over the next three to five years." But I didn't! Thank You AG.
