  1. I made quite a mess of my two poached eggs this morning. However, on toasted Texas toast, they are quite good. I dusted them with a little of Trader Joe’s umami powder. I am enjoying my breakfast while watching this poor chap and feeling quite sorry for him. His boat seems to be aptly named. He pulled out of the Marina shortly before 8 AM and had no sooner got onto the road than his engine began to give him trouble and he had to stop. It is now almost 10 o’clock and he is still only a few feet ahead of where he was when he started. By the sound made the last time he slammed down the hood, I’m suspecting his patience is wearing very thin.
  2. If you are in the least squeamish please skip this post concerning our dinner preparations this evening. But just remember they only one step removed from cockroaches on the evolutionary ladder . From the box And into the pot.

    Dinner 2019

No. Would you like me to take mine out and show you?
  4. Really, truly I am not blaming you. I had to try it and I do not believe you were the only one to recommend that time and temperature. As for being safe from interaction with the police... you are so wrong...oh damn we’re supposed to stick to food...

    Dinner 2019

I dunno. Is it just me or does this pasta have a striking resemblance to a lower denture?
  6. No such difficult decisions have been made just yet. Whether they are 100% beef or merely 100% Canadian, for certain they are not AAA grade.
  7. Life is short: eat dessert for lunch. Kerry made this poppyseed cake with blueberries and labneh from Zahav. The rest is about to be devoured by staff.
  8. Sirloin steaks — 100% Canadian? 100% beef? Hmmmm.
  9. Breakfast was a juicy, ashen, quail-sized chicken thigh on toasted rye. The squeaky roomie gets white Texas toast (not quite in time for today’s breakfast).
  10. Think of it as the sanitized version of the other F word.
  11. Following your directions of 300°F steam bake for an hour…… After 45 minutes my lovely chicken thighs had shrunk to the size of quail thighs, in another 15 minutes I estimated they would have reached the size of ortolan thighs. And then, before we had a chance to begin dinner, the gendarmerie nationale would be at the door. They were juicy (the thighs, not the gendarmes) but ashen. Back to 425°F next time. My suspicion is that the Cdn version of the CSO doesn’t like to faff about and prefers to get on with the job.
  12. We have a “delicious“ button but no “oh so lovely” button — we need one!
  13. Frame-worthy photos! I go to bed too early to see the sunset so I have to count on you.
  14. Do you see any Canadian Club in our photo? That’s Forty Creek Copper Pot and it is darn good. Unfortunately their website seems to be down.

    Lunch 2019

Yep! Did that tonight. Almost painless. Was good too.
  16. It’s come a long way! You might not recognize it unless you graduated just last week!😂
  17. I feel so much better knowing that someone understands. Meals so far are not exciting to look at but plenty tasty to eat. Above is the last of the smoky blue cheese just melting on some rye toast. Lunch looks equally beige. This is canned salmon mixed with a little mayonnaise and then dusted with some vadouvan seasoning. Also on rye toast. But it would’ve made such a good sandwich on Texas toast – – I mean the proper kind – – the white kind.
  18. Don’t beat yourself up. I knew exactly what she had to eat and what she had taken a photograph of and I still couldn’t recognize it. And that was after only one cocktail.
  19. Well it’s really quite boring. Kerry worked emerg yesterday until 6 PM. We had visitors who made a flying trip up from Toronto and returned within a couple of hours. Since Kira would not be coming home until after 6 PM we were a little unsure as to whether she would need to be fed or whether that had been taken care of (we should have known better! of course she had been fed). We asked Kira‘s caregiver if she would care to join us for a cocktail once we knew she was bringing Kira back. By the time that was all done and we had a wonderful visit, it was a bit late to think seriously about anything that needed to be cooked. I noticed that Kerry had bought a loaf of Texas toast. I decided I would love a sandwich made on Texas toast. But when I got to the counter to pull the slices from the package I was horrified. Can you believe she bought whole-grain Texas toast? Whoever heard of healthy Texas toast? What is this world coming to? Defeated and downtrodden by my discovery, I decided to fall back on emergency R.C.A.F. rations. This is what we girls made in barracks when we got up too late for breakfast in the mess hall. A forbidden toaster, somebody who had at least got their clothes on dispatched to the mess hall to swipe some bread and some ketchup packages and we all had something to eat before hitting the parade ground. I have told the story many times so I know most of you are bored with it. Although I barely eat ketchup on anything else, I still eat it on toast with lots of pepper. Kerry finished off the last of the (sour cream and onion) potato chips.
  20. You would win the prize if only there was one!
  21. Kerry made me post my dinner too!
