  6. Yes -- the cakes are in the Shaadi Book she mentions -- the book is for the local community here in DC "Dream Shaadi," a Vienna-based wedding publication, went on sale earlier this year in South Asian grocery stores throughout the Washington region; shaadi means wedding in Hindi. Publisher Punita Arora said she published 15,000 such guides so Indian families could stop relying only on word of mouth or on traveling elsewhere to get their wedding goods. "

  10. TP Yes, traditionally cakes were not a part of Indian weddings. A lot of urban weddings though have cakes .. as did this one. However in this one the cake cutting was not performed (as is done here). I am Indian and married to an Indian but since we got married here in DC we had a lovely tiered cake (and that was eleven years ago). I also have attended various weddings here in the states and in India where people are starting to order cakes Incidentally todays Washignton Post reports on Indian weddings (a 4 page article) by a lovely reporter Ms. Kalita.. and they focus on this book that was recently released in DC called Shaadi and wedding cakes are a large focus of it. IF you need anyother information please feel free to PM me
  11. Thanks for the note easyguru. India is very diverse and this article is meant to show the diversity. It was a big wedding. Its meant to show how urban weddings are getting bigger. Its not meant to depict a rural wedding.. which is also equally beautiful.. but on a different scale. Although cakes are not a part of the traditional Indian weddings.. there are cakes today in many weddings that I have attended.
  12. Dr. Bharath and Ms. Prema We would like to thank both of you for participating in this thought provoking Q&A. I hope that you will grace us again soon with another equally interesting piece! I would like to personally request you to stay around after this formal Q&A is over and enrich the forums with your postings On behalf of the entire eG team and specially the India forum eGers.. THANK YOU This concludes the formal part of this Q&A, you may continue discussions here.. however do realize that Dr. Bharath and Ms Prema may not be here to respond to specific questions.

  19. Here is how we re-heat ours - Place the rotis in a paper napkin. Sprinkle a few drops of water. Place in the microwave for about 45 secs - 1 minute. The steam from the water softens and heats the roti
  20. I like eating jackfruit raw.. I remember reading somewhere about rice layered with jackfruit... What other fruits do folks use? Custard apple? Grapes? Apples?
  21. Good morning all For lunch today I am making a very simple dish. Cumin scented potatoes. Oil is seasoned with cumin, ginger and garlic. Potatoes and red bell peppers are sauteed. then freshly ground coriander, turmeric, red chili and salt. Cover and cook until potatoes are done -- and its ready to eat What could be easier? What is your simple and charming potato recipe? Do share?
  22. Black salt is generally used for snack foods like chaat or for drinks like Jal Jeera. i have not seen it used in cooking vegetables or meats It has a strong smell though so beware.. it does sort of mellow down. We had a funny experience here in DC with it. A chef used it at a tasting and people sweared up and down there was a rotten egg in the room! Personally I love the taste of it (Hi nessa )
