Early dinner late lunch. This was too yummy not to post. Meal at farmers market restaurant BBQ chicken, fried okra and crowder peas. Roast beef and gravy, French fries and corn. Biscuits and hushpuppies alongside. Peach cobbler for dessert. Yum! Stuffed!

Shrimp boil with old bay and corn! One of my faves at the beach(NC) is a 'steam pot' - oysters, shrimp, crawfish, crab legs, clams, potatoes, corn, and kielbasa.

The ethics of stealing bags (and containers)
toolprincess replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
I have to agree with Rico - is it possible to steal something that is already free? Also just some other items that are commonly taken: 1- napkins (if I take 20 instead of 2 am I stealing?) 2- condiments (same question) 3- pens at hotels 4- straws for drinks There are tons of items in our culture that are available for us to use/acquire/take as we please/at our leisure. Generally most people don't abuse this... I think the bags fall into this category and a couple of extra is not a big deal. Just my 2 cents. -
Well there are several theories on this... I have been driving by a may 21 - Judgement day, billboard for months and it has caused much amusement as may 21 is my birthday. So my first thought was to live it up but the group has "clarified" that it is judgement day only for the righteous. The unrighteous (me) will still be here on the 22nd to suffer out end of days. So either way righteous or end of days I think we should eat whatever we want tomorrow!! For the record I would want fried pork chops, poutine, shrimp boil, babyback ribs, mashed Taters, fried okra and a bowl of spicy pad Thai with yellow cake chocolate icing to top it all off!! How gluttonous right? Told you I was one of the unrighteous.

I checked the bottle and found that it does have a Use by date of 3/2012.

I like the peanut chocolate chip and the chocolate chip Clif bars. I bought some of these to take with me when I travel. Larabars are decent and very natural but I tend to not be able to forget that they are mostly dates or figs (at least the ones I have had) - but that's ok cause I like dates and figs. I used to eat Luna bars and they weren't too bad. I mostly stuck to the chocolate varieties (s'mores for one) and I think they also had a peanut butter cookie one that was decent. However, the texture of the coatings can be a little waxy and does bring to mind carob more than anything.

Andi I have a Thingy like that but mine is plastic. Teehee

I have a jar of tahini that I picked up at a Lebanese market last year. I have never opened it. Is it still good? How can I tell? If the oil has separated is that a bad sign? (I am always buying things I "have to have" and then forgetting or never getting around to the recipe that called for that ingredient - that I am sure could be a whole other topic).

I tried the Wheat thins rosemary and Olive oil. they were pretty good. It gives you a way to eat a triscuit without a topper (cheese, etc.). I like the regular triscuits but generally only as a vehicle to convey something else to my mouth. The bane of my existence is Ritz Chips (Cheddar flavor). I can't stop eating them! I am not a Cheez-its fan but the hot and spicy Tabasco ones are pretty good. Keebler - Zestas are my favorite saltine. I love the Export sodas and sometimes buy the huge round tin at BJ's. Nutcrisps almond are tasty and a very good cracker to serve for those who have gluten issues. A club cracker original shouldn't be messed with - I doubt I'll try other flavors. Toasteds sesame, wheat and butter are very good. Who knew I was such a Keebler person??? For filled snack crackers I prefer the Lance variety over all others. (toast-chee - bright orange crackers with peanut butter).

I also can't stop eating POP chips from TJ's. Or Pirates Booty or I guess anything that is light and airy and low-cal (unless you insist on eating it all AT ONCE).

To help with this same Ben and Jerry's "problem" I've taken to only buying the tiny (but still fat filled) single servings that come with their own flat plastic spoons. In this way I find I can restrain myself. However, the flavor choices are limited. Recently I bought a pint of Chunky Monkey and managed to make it last for 3 servings. I can only do this if I make myself scoop it out into a bowl - if I start eating out of the carton...I'm doomed!

Too hungry to take photos as we didn't eat til almost 8:30. Tonight bulgogi beef ( from the freezer), sweet and sour slaw, coconut basmati rice and trader joe's garlic naan. A 'fusion' meal. Ha. I ate my bulgogi wrapped in lettuce leaves, the SO ate his just with rice. The slaw wasn't as good as I hoped not enough dressing (sugar, vinegar, oil, salt) or not enough time to soak it up or both. The basmati rice was good. Set out to make coconut rice with jasmine rice but then discovered I had no jasmine rice. Humph.

Hummus and pita chips. Chips and salsa. Microwave popcorn. Peanut M&M's - which I don't keep in the house.

Bumping this topic. Anyone have any opinions on Fresh Market today? The one near me is quite "shi shi". They have an excellent selection of baked goods that are quite tasty. I particularly like something they call Kitchen sink cookies - that have coconut, butterscotch chips, oatmeal, raisins...pretty much everything but the kitchen sink. I like their bulk candies - a great place to pick up gummy worms. And they have the small packets of spices so you don't have to buy a large amount. Their cheese selection is ok and more expensive (as far as I can tell) than other stores. Generally I don't do any regular shopping there but I do like to swing through once in a while and pick up some specialty items. As I mentioned in the MOthers Day 2011 post we got the whole "picnic" lunch for my MIL there yesterday.

For my (almost) MIL we picked up deli sandwiches, potato salad, bacon and tomato pasta salad, mixed marinated olives, Route 66 lightly salted chips and apple pie for dessert. (all bought at the Fresh Market) My MIL and I also shared a small sushi appetizer. For my own mother - dinner out in her small town at a chain establishment not worth mentioning (she picked and it was mother's day).

Breakfast! The most important meal of the day (2004-2011)
toolprincess replied to a topic in Cooking
NO money shot but Satuday I had the following: Flour tortilla, rice, black beans, scallions, avocado, cheese and to top it off a fried egg and some hot sauce. It was NOMNOMNOM! -
Love gummies. Dislike Swedish fish. It's a textural thing. I also dislike mike and ikes, good n plenty, dots, and gumdrops for the same reasons.
-
I like hotdogs with baked beans and wavy potato chips. Turkey needs dressing/stuffing and cranberry sauce. Fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Chili and cornbread. But I can happily eat combinations of different foods depending on what my mood is - I do love potlucks for this very reason.

I think this also touches on a way to take care of the caregivers as well as the ones who are ailing. In the case of a death in the family the ones left behind are often too busy, distracted, grieving to nourish and care for themselves. However, when you get into a situation like a visitation or a wake where friends and neighbors are bringing over food and everyone is sharing it, I think you get a chance to comfort the person in a less constrictive formal setting and also the bereaved is often pressed to EAT EAT and take care of themselves. Plus in the days after when the visitors have dispersed it is much easier to follow the routine of eating if there is food readily available. I think that just as food can connect us in laughter, in business and in building relationships it also connects us to help those who are sick or grieving.

Happy cinco de mayo! Dinner tonight tacos with pork tenderloin slices, radishes, cabbage, sour cream, pickled spring onion, mango salsa, avocado slices and yucateo habanero hot sauce. Accompanied by black beans and yellow rice. And a beer margarita in a classy ball jar glass. Taco number 2 with lettuce

Last night from the freezer - pepperoni and sausage calzone for the SO, Miso-teriyaki salmon for me. I was a bit concerned about the salmon as I thought it might be "off" it smelled a bit fishy cooking but it was delicious once on the plate.
