  1. Ditto on Penang, a really underrated place, really great, unusual Panasian food, served in a bright, comfortable, immaculate atmosphere, BYOB as well. On the other end of the spectrum, adjacent to Penang on Lewis St is Jean Louis, for NY/Paris quality French food. Also look for his "2CV" (antique french car) in the driveway. The best takeout/specialty deli is Aux Delices on Route 1 (Putnam Ave). Everything homemade from main courses to salads to sandwiches on artisinal bread. Realy fresh, good seafood at the unassuming but always busy Elm Street Oyster House. Pan fried oysters and rock shrimp are fabulous here. Greenwich has some great places for food, you should have fun discovering all of them!!
  2. Please reread my post. I said: "You can't please everyone". The place is also consistently packed with customers.
  3. Let me just reiterate my kudos for the Brickway. You can't please everyone, but most folks love the place. Here is a blurb from The Daily Jolt, a Brown University student newspaper:
  4. Some of NJ is closer to Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore than NYC. ← True. And Newburgh, being 40 miles up the Thruway, is further from NJ than all the very good restos dotting the border just in Rockland. Xaviars, Relish, Citrus Grille, just to name a few. They are in Rockland because of the much more liberal liquor licensing availabilities in NY State.
  5. Absolute best breakfast is in a gentrified part of town, on Wickenden. The Brickway, 234 Wickenden St, has awesome breakfasts. For a unique treat, get some New York system weiners at Olneyville. In spite of the name, these hot dogs are unique to Providence. 18 Plainfield St. Great seafood specialties, like giant stuffed quahogs (clams) and clam cakes are best at Carrie's, 1035 Douglas avenue. If you're brave, you'll try some "CoffeeMilk" at a fountain. Too sweet for my taste, though.
  6. Yes, that's why I prefer the Port restaurants in Beaulieu. A bit less ostentatious, less touristy, right on the water, if just a bit less of a dramatic setting than in Villefranche. But with all the boats bobbing and the warm breezes blowing, it's still darn nice.
  7. Great, thanks, but I prefer Yahoo Maps. GOING THERE is a better tool. "several Miles" is actually less than 1 mile. (from the L Tunnel) The towns in Hudson circle around each other, so you have Union City, West NY, Guttenberg, and Weehawken, with a little North Bergen (actually in Hudson County) thrown in. To get to Edgewater, you need to go past Palisades Medical Center and keep going another mile. About 2 1/2 miles from PFC to the Edgewater border. Oh, yeah, Google Local is also much better than Mapquest.
  8. Definitely NOT in Edgewater. It's in one of those new commercial developments just outside the Lincoln Tunnel entrance, probably Weehawken. Hudson County.
  9. Sorry to disagree. The Maeterlinck is on the Eastern border of Nice, on the coast road going toward Villefranche. A spectacular setting clinging to the dunes. Never been there, but pass it all the time. As far as Mère Germaine, I don't care for it much. All the restos on the water in VSM are very disappointing and touristy.(And overpriced) If you must be on the water, go another 10 minutes east to Beaulieu and go into the Port de Plaisance. There are a couple of adequate places there, much better than Villefranche IMHO.
  10. As far as PF Changs is concerned, they also do a very good job. Sad to say, they are probably better than 99% of the Chinese food available in New Jersey. Too bad they don't have one in Bergen County...
  11. Well, it's not really a "reward", and if the place is a good restaurant with food and ambience that you enjoy in a restaurant, why "punish" yourself by depriving yourself of a meal at the place?
  12. Where have you been dining?
  13. Ching's Table in New Canaan Penang in Greenwich. These 2 Asian sister restaurants are hard to beat. Non-traditional Asian cooking, served beautifully, nice smart-casual ambience, wonderful, memorable flavors. At Ching's the best dish IMHO is the Crisp Red Snapper with Penang Curry, and the Duck strips in Ginger sauce. At Penang, go for the mini-wok dishes where you pick the sauce and the meat, and they pick the vegetables to go with the dish. Salads are fabulous, Blue Cabbage salad, Vietnamese salad, and a Greens salad with a dressing to die for. Great stuff!!
  14. Aren't you an admitted cigar smoker? Hmmm...
  15. Actually I've only been to several Fermes Auberges in the Lot and Dordogne areas. But use the link I provided above, it lists all of them, usually most of them are very very good. And please report back to us here about your experiences!
  16. This department of old "Gascogne" has some of the most rural countryside in France. Towns are small, and areas in between the towns have sparse things to do for a tourist. Auch is the biggest village, and the area, being in the SudOuest specializes in duck and goose liver preparations. You might do best to eat and/or stay at some of the Fermes Auberges, a wonderful idea throughout France where the proprietor of a farm opens up a dining room where they can only prepare items grown on the farm itself. Some of them have simple lodging as well. Don't look for any luxury hotels in Gascogne. But do try a Ferme Auberge. It can be a wonderful experience! FERMES AUBERGES IN THE GERS
  17. Uh, please quote my comments here that I made about the dinner. Maybe I missed them or can't remember any.
  18. Next to Pimaan, in Emerson, there's a new deli called " Marra's". Looks interesting from the road, don't know what they mean by "Brick Oven Pizza". Any reports?
  19. Just a naive question, but if they didn't scrub the walls, and are open Wed or Thursday night, (Kosher would be closed) why bother with matzo meal? Just go to a nice restaurant and have a good time! Either choice is " trafe" . Might as well have good food.
  20. In order for a place to be open, they would have to go through many ritualistic cleaning tasks, and most restos either will not bother, or will close altogether. What you need is a "kosher style" that is open but is really not adhering to the Passover rules.
  21. How can you check if gloves are dirty? There are many brands and many shades of these gloves. A friend told me that unless these gloves are sterile, they can actually have more bacteria than hands washed in soap and hot water. And nobody uses sterile gloves, too expensive. I just watched Jacques Pépin cook some wonderful fish and sauce on TV, he did everything with his hands, and I loved it!
  22. When I see food being handled with rubber gloves, whether it be a chef, a kitchen helper, or a food store clerk, I am just turned off. Somehow it just seems to me that these gloves are LESS sanitary than hands that are washed thoroughly and kept clean. I've seen these gloves sprout up and are used regularly by deli clerks and sandwich makers; can't see the logic. Just a few years ago these gloves were just never used, and I didn't notice any pandemic breakouts. Just picture in your mind a Jacques Pépin, Lidia, or a Daniel Boulud on a TV show wearing rubber gloves! Ecchh! You wouldn't touch the stuff! I think all these latex gloves should just be tossed, and all these people should just be required to maintain good "hand hygiene". Much more palatable.
  23. Call me naive, but I have a difficult time understanding the meaning of "retirement" as it refers to Egullet. I assume one will continue to goto restaurants, continue to eat, and continue to be interested in food. Posting a comment on Eg may take 3-5 minutes. Why does someone have to "retire"? Surely these recent "retirees" are still eating, and have a few extra minutes in their day to post? Help!!
  24. The national average net earnings in France is 30K Euros per annum. Sounds like a pretty big splurge for most of them. Not much?
  25. Is this a deep fried dog?
