    Dinner! 2003

Varmint, What is a sea bean please?
  6. I'm fairly certain this has been said on this thread already, but to get to the office, brew an entire pot of coffee in a drip maker without putting the grounds in, and then have ten construction workers standing around you like beggars, empty cups in hand, while you contemplate the pot of hot, brown-tinged water . . .

    Gas stoves

My understanding is that your landlord is LEGALLY OBLIGATED to correct this problem. But since you got a new range I guess you're all good now.
  8. Cream cheese and pineapple jelly with a little horseradish. On a cracker. Is that simple (and awful-sounding) or what? But it's good.
  9. Well, my kids ain't gonna have THAT problem.
  10. I second that. And third it. And yeah--what about the wine?
  11. Holy cats Batman!

    Pop Tarts

awbrig, If I were you I would go with the pop-tart sticks. They seem to be less dry.
  15. My takeout (main dish) comes in the black plastic with the clear plastic lid. Soup in the waxed-paper like cup. Complimentary wings in the waxed-paper like baggie. But they still put the rice in the cool paper container with wire handles. What does your rice come in if not the cool paper container? On topic, I usually put the stuff in a bowl and eat it with a big spoon or some other implement that will not interfere with my shoveling. If I'm not injecting it directly into my veins, that is.
  16. Last night I was at the baaaah with my brother, and I wanted some whisky. Well. He wouldn't drink Crown Royal straight, so I asked the baaaahtender what could be . . . uh . . . mixed with whisky. The baaaahteder, who is really a marvelous man, mixed the Crown with Buttershots. BUTTERSHOTS. I drank that shite plain. I drink a lot of strange thing, but Crown Royal + Buttershots is NOT one of them. P.S. Baaaahtender later got busted for giving me free drinks, camera was on. P.S.S. They have a camera?
  17. Why?!? What's wrong wit da Vidiot?
  18. Oh no! That's bad! Edited: Holy crap, are you kidding me? That's worse!
  19. Got to love the Buck Snort Restaurant Bar and Casino. It's in Evaro, MT, on Hwy 93. Actually I think there's one in Colorado too, but not sure if they're affiliated.
  20. Sparrowgrass--I sure do. Where are we going? This thread is making me kind of sad, with school starting up, I don't know when I'll next be able to spend half a summer out West. Tomorrow I will bring the photos in to work and scan them here. I'll see if I can get them up, I've had no luck so far. It makes me laugh just thinking of it: my uncle in his "Montana" hat, all sweaty, brandishing a meat fork, leaning over these steaks and glaring at the camera . . . and the entire horizon behind him filled with black smoke. Reminds me of another memorable trail meal: Wild Horse Island, Flathead Lake, Montana, a place so awesome that I could be eating moldy pepperoni and still be happy. After hiking and encountering a huge herd of bighorn sheep and their babies, my aunt laid a cloth with hangar steak (marinated in her secret teriyaki stuff), thinly sliced, cold sesame noodles sprinkled with scallions, a huge salad, and wine. We stuffed ourselves and then took a swim just as the sun went down over the lake. Boyfriend wasn't complaining about THAT one. I want to go back there right now.
  21. My ideal trail meal is-- Out on the trail: pan bagnia, with black olives, runny summer tomatoes, basil leaves, onion, arugula, roasted red bell peppers, mozzarella, maybe some capers, and the bread rubbed with garlic and olive oil, and a few drops of wine vinegar. Some kind of bean or lentil salad--maybe that Texas caviar stuff. An apple. And 2 brownies. Water. Back at the camp: burgers on the grill. Or big fat old Montana steaks. Mmm. Montana. Did quite a bit of camping and hiking there again this summer. My then-boyfriend was amazed at our refusal to stop eating well just because we were in the middle of nowhere. After a day of strenuous hiking in Glacier, back at the campground, we ate absolutely enormous ribeyes on the grill. There was an (absolutely enormous) forest fire inching its way down the hill towards our campground. All around us, people were pulling up stakes and getting out of there. My uncle refused to budge until the steaks were done and eaten. My mom, aunt and I didn't question his judgement, just sat there, drank beers, and waited for dinner. Poor boyfriend was pacing back and forth, one eye on the steaks, one eye on the fire. Already jumpy after a few near-misses with a young grizzly earlier that day (city boy), he finally stalked over to me, leaned down to where I sat (quite calmly) and hissed: "You people are f*****g insane. Can we PLEASE get out of here." My uncle overhead him, and said, "don't get yer balls in a knot, now. The steak's not done." He then shot me a meaningful glance. I knew that boyfriend wouldn't last. Edit: to say what a great spot to hit my 200th post, and if I had the means, I'd post the photo of that forest fire in the background of those steaks on the grill. A great shot.

    The March of Asparagus

I saw my first ass-per-grass in the store last Friday. Drizzled them in e.v.o.o., tossed with little red potatoes, and roasted with a couple of halibut steaks. Mmm. Can't prepare asparagus soup since unfortunate blender-related incident last spring (involving my very burnt hands and a panicked cat covered with green soup). Have steamed it, then served as a starter with wasabi mayonnaise. Also tied with a chive. Tres Martha. Had an ex-boyfriend whose parents have a big old house on a former asparagus farm. Their yard was teeming with the stuff. Fond memories of stumbling about, looking for stalks.

  24. Was just thinking about this this morning. "Think about it, Haaaaaah." "Delicatessen," all the way.
  25. In my opinion, best food movie ever is "Delicatessen." Wait. Is that even about food?
