Made curry last night. One night when I had gone out with friends my husband made what he called a hamburger curry. It is a bowl of curry rice with a hamburger patty plopped on top. The kids loved, so I prepared it last night, had a bunch of hard boiled eggs, to I halved those and added them as well. It was quite good! I really liked the boiled eggs and thing I will use them more often, I have made Indian style curries with eggs, but never Japanese.

In 12 years in Japan, I have been to 2 ramen shops! The tantan men I usually eat is at Chinese restaurants, usuallyat Bamiyan (a Chinese chain on the Denny's level but with decent food).

I don't know about WWII but I saw Jackie Chan do it in a movie once! Thanks for all the suggestions!

I find that if I don't eat rice for dinner (which I do eat 5 to7 times a week) I wake up ravenously hungry. Pasta and bread just don't fill me up I guess.

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I never realized there were so many things to do with hard boiled eggs. With 30 plus eggs I will be giving quite a few a try!
-
I don't use anything in place of salt. I salt things even if they have soy, nampla, anchovies, blue cheese, etc. Of course I always taste it first!

This is how I cook about 90% of the time! I am on a very limited budget and I try to stretch my shopping trips as long as possible. Keep reading you will see some interesting things I pull together.

suiton in miso soup is wonderful! Natto is not!

the white pork broth is tonkotsu and is my favorite too! I didn't include ramen in the original list of noodles, because they are of Chinese origin, though they are as Japanese as all the others now. So list your favorite ramen as well. I love one called tantanmen, which has ground meat and a wonderful spicey broth. Smallworld, embarrassed to admit I have never tried sanuki udon, it is a goal for me this summer now!

I am sure you will love it! Indian food changed my life!

I am like snowangel, If I don't eat breakfast I find I am hungrier through out the day. I can't eat anything heavy, normally just some bread and fruit and BIG glass of iced coffee! Occasionally I will forget to eat breakfast(like today) and then am ravenous at lunch, had a big mac, large fries, large iced tea and am still hungry!

I just saw a picture of this the other day in a magazine (Fine Cooking or Eating Well) it was Trotter and somebody getting together for a book? Called something like "Raw", I have to go back and find that.

The kids are coloring easter eggs today so soon I am going to have a refrigerator full of hard boiled eggs. Any creative ideas of what to do with them? I get tired of egg salad, deviled eggs and egg curries!

I was in the supermarket today and there right in the entrance was a pile of young coconut for 100 yen (90 cents) each. It seemed to good a deal to pass up. Now that I am home I have no idea what to do with it! help!! Is is round and white and about the size of a softball, I am not even sure how to open it! There were a pile of durian right next to it, but I left those there!

kishimen are really great, sort of like flat, wide udon noodles. They taste the same as udon.

Oh that sounds wonderful! Care to tweak it a little so you can add it to the archive? My favourite way is steamed, served with a lemon, garlic butter and sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds. I will give it a try and see what I can do!

India girl, Wow! thanks for taking that job on! If you have some time would you mind tackling the Balic Bio thread next?

4 Cups of milk? Why? Do you eat cereal in a large mixing bowl? How much cereal do you eat with it?

My 2 favorites are probably the 2 least seen out of Japan, kishimen and hiyamugi. Kishimen is great in soups and nabe type dishes especially with miso. Hiyamugi is always served cold (hiya=chilled) and is a little thicker then somen with more bite, I like it best with sesame based sauces.

my absolute favorite soup is the oozoni that my MIL prepares for new years day. A clear soup with carrots, gobo, daikon, thin slices of wagyu beef and a grilled piece of mochi all topped off with mistuba. I really need to learn how she makes it someday.

I think it depends on what kind of dish you are talking about. For stew, sauces etc, I prefer the slightly subtle difference of salting before serving and I use kosher salt (mostly) or maldon sea salt (salads, roasts, etc). I only use table salt in baking, I tried using kosher salt in 2 recipes from the Babbo book, where he says kosher, but in both I would bite into a salt pocket and I didn't care for it. As for a consesus........... I don't feel like re-reading it either!

DAMN! That's one big baby! My son was 9.5 and I thought he was huge. he was 10lb .6oz. Ack My sister who drank skim milk during all 4 pregnancies had kids ranging from 9 1/2 lbs to 11lbs 12 oz. I on the other hand drank mostly whole milk and the biggest of my 3 weighed in at 7 1/2 lbs. Go figure!
