  1. I found a new Domino's flyer in my newspaper this morning. The new Cheese Melt pizza 3 layers with either a bolognese sauce or a seafood sauce The bottom layer has camembert cheese and a cheese mix with either sauce The middle layer has mozarella cheese and a cheese mix as well as either sauce The top layer has cream cheese and natural cheese and black pepper on the seafood one and parsley on the bolognese one
  2. After re-reading this thread I realized I never posted my pictures from last summer, they were only in my foodblog. I am now reposting it here. After Parallax the 6 of us headed over to the Velvet Tango Room where we were joined by 3 more people for cocktails and dessert. I really enjoyed the Ramos Gin Fizz when I was there last week but wanted to try something different. I don't drink normally and can't handle anything that actually tastes like alcohol. The bartender was great and said she would make a drink for me. It turned out to be a lovely mixture of with the made on the premises ginger ale with another made on the premises red wine reduction syrup. We all saved room for dessert. With Bananas Foster and Crepes Suzette on the menu who wouldn't?? Paulius (the owner) prepares everything tableside (or sofa side in our case). Wonderful!! and did I mention that Paulius presents all the women with kisses and roses...
  3. This is a wonderful sakura cream puff I enjoyed two weeks ago and this the sakura cheese thread
  4. It is that time of year again! I think there are more sakura flavored products now than there are blossoms on the trees. A local newspaper showcased a couple of the products Sorry, it is a bit hard to see. from the left is sakura tofu sakura herb tea and sakura leaf tea sakura cheese sakura pasta sakura soba sakura ice cream
  5. I made a wonderful chawan mushi (steamed savory egg custard) the other day. I prefer to make my chawan mushi in a large bowl rather than individual cups as I find it easier. This version had ground chicken (sauteed with sake salt and pepper first) and mizuna stems (this was the only vegetable I had in the refrigerator at the time). It was really good, though the mizuna stems all floated to the top..... Though it was fine as is I topped it with a sauce or soy sauce-rice wine vinegar-sesame oil-sesame seeds
  6. A friend of mine whose husband works for House Foods gave me this pack of Kinoko Stew, she said it is her favorite stew product. I forgot to take a picture of the stew itself... sorry I really liked it and my 3 kids loved it as well. I will be making it again. The package suggests using chicken, shimeji, eryngii, onions and broccoli, I picked up what was on sale so my version included thinly sliced pork, shimeji, shiitake and onions.
  7. At least she tried things! One thing I have learned when traveling with children is to just go with the flow. My 3 kids are quite adventurous eaters but on a 2 week trip to Indonesia last year we often found ourselves in McDonald's and A&W. I had a huge list of restaurants I wanted to go to but we ended up at about 1/5 of them. The kids were were often too tired or under the weather. It was far from my ideal trip foodwise but a wonderful trip nevertheless. I ahve to admit the best food I had though was when I left my husband and kids behind and joined eGullet member prasantrin in Ubud, Bali. I planned our upcoming Christmas trip too late this year (yes it is still March ) and we are going to go to Guam instead of Australia, I refuse to make any specific dining plans as I know they probably won't pan out...
  8. I too am waiting to hear about the new Whole Foods as I will be back in Cleveland this summer. Since it is located just minutes from where I grew up (and my parents still live) I have a feeling it will be my go to store. Wild Oats I only went to once was very disappointed, very similar to Trader Joe's but nearly twice the price. I love Mustard Seed but since it is down in Solon I usually only make it out there once during my month long trip. Trader Joe's I get to at least once a week and Miles Farmer's Market I head to every other week. I prefer Miles for fruits and vegetables while I use Trader Joe's and Mustard Seed more for staple products. Heinens is where I run to when I need to do my everyday shopping or run out to get something that my parent's don't have. I also shop at Costco and Giant Eagle (I really like the Legacy Village location) for meats and other bulk/sale items. When I am back in the states for summer, I am cooking for a minimum of 13 people every night so I need to consider costs as well.
  9. Do try to make it! We have some incredible meals planned. Phnom Penh is also on my to go to list (again!) this summer. It has been on the list for the past 4 years and for some reason have never made it. I had forgotten about Momocho, wonderful Mexican food! I am definitely going back this summer. I had also forgotten about Parallax for sushi as it isn't a Japanese restaurant but their sushi was also worth going back for. Carrie Cerrino's is worth the trip from anywhere in Northern Ohio (though I wish it was more centrally located ) This place is definitely in my top 3 for best Cleveland restaurants, now if I could figure out the other 2...
  10. My favorite sushi/Japanese restaurant in general is Pacific East on Coventry (right by the Mayfield Corner). This is the only Japanese restaurant I bother to go to any more.
  11. Like Robyn said the prices are already quite high, I can't imagine them getting all that much higher. Apparently not all the chefs here are pleased at the announcement, from the Guardian: "The French do not understand anything about sushi and are so far behind in handling fresh fish. So how can they judge us?" asked Yoshikazu Ono, head chef at Sukiyabashi Jiro, a Tokyo sushi restaurant. He told the Associated Press. "If they want to appreciate Japanese cuisine, they must first study Japan's history and culture. Then they can write their guide." the rest of the article
  12. My choices in no particular order Tabasco original Chipotle Tabasco (I would be drinking this stuff if it wasn't so hard to find in Japan) Sriracha Kochujang My choice for a 5th would depend on what kind of flavor you are looking for/cook the most. I would probably go with yuzu koshou (a Japanese paste like product that is a combination of green chiles and the yuzu citrus rind), but harissa and sambal olek get a lot of use in my house as well.
  13. Edsel, Thank you so much for the report! When Chef Matt sent me the e-mail announcing the opening I was so jealous knowing I wouldn't be able to go. I am glad you were there and with your camera. Another restaurant on my list for this summer.
  14. Thank you for the picture of the noodles, now I know what you are talking about. Those are Sanuki Udon, originally from Kagawa Prefecture they have recently become very popular all over Japan. Most of the shops are sort of self service, you pick either hot or cold noodles from various sizes and add whatever toppings you want. They usually start at 100yen for a small bowl so you can often find the restaurants by locating the big bright colored udon shops with 100yen banners. This website describes the process in which these shops work.
  15. Another twist on my nikujyaga. I used my recipe from recipeGullet but used pork instead of beef and added about a cup of kimchi at the same time as the other seasonings and tossed some scallions in at the very end. Everyone loved it.
  16. Another daikon salad shredded daikon with a can of water packed scallops and mayo, seasoned with a splash of lemon juice. I added a pack of kaiware (daikon sprouts) for color. I used the benriner to shred the daikon this time and it was too thin for my taste, it is better to julienne it by hand into thicker pieces.
  17. I have never heard this before and I can't imagine any reputable restaurants doing this, if it is done it is probably in private homes.
  18. Thanks for the video link! The frog sashimi would be a bit more appetizing to me if it wasn't served with the frog staring at you! EDITED to add it doesn't look or sound like a shop many women would go to...
  19. Here is some info on the shop Asadachi in Nishi Shinjuku and sure enough their menu includes frog sashimi.
  20. a quick, nice lunch from the supermarket bibimbap with a soft boiled egg 398 yen ($3.35)
  21. This was one of the most incredible things I have ever eaten! Sakura Shu-cream (cream puff) It was a regular cream puff filled with a delicious vanilla custard cream and one dark sweet cherry, it was then dusted with sakura powder and wrapped in a briny leaf. The filling was reminiscent of cherry vanilla ice cream and the sakura powder add the just the perfect accent of sakura while the leaf added the most subtle but perfectly complementary flavor. (I removed the leaf before eating) I am going to be headed back once a week for this until they are gone....
  22. This was a tasty onigiri anago (conger eel) don theere was a bit of shredded egg under the anago as well.
  23. I have never seen hot noodles served without soup, I am pretty sure it is because they would stick together terribly. Most Japanese noodles shops don't have pan fried noodles. yaki-udon (stirfried udon) in most places is very simply seasoned with soy sauce and vegetables and maybe some meat, this might be a good option for your daughter if you can find it. yaki-soba is sort of a mis-named dish as it actually doesn't use soba but Chinese style egg noodles, the taste is quite a bit stronger. If you daughter like tonkatsu sauce she may be OK as the taste is similar but I have a feeling yaki-udon might be a little better for her.
  24. That pasta looks quite good! As a family with smallish kids as well family restaurants like Jonathan's are really wonderful. There is something for everyone, the price is good and although it may not be the best meal of your life it will be good. It looks like you are already getting your fill of tonkatsu! Look for the tonkatsu sandwiches, those are my favorite. It looks like the rain is going to clear up by this afternoon and the sun will come out so you can get back outside again. I just wish it was warmer for you, last weekend it was incredibly sunny and even hit about 70F.
  25. This sounded interesting Canadian Gold (apple flavored tea with maple syrup) It was so awful I couldn't even finish it! There is another apple tea out there that is quite good, but this had this awful fake apple taste at the first sip then you tasted the tea then it was followed by an even more awful fake maple flavor.
