  1. Waitrose Canary Wharf is probably the best supermarket fish counter in London, if you exclude places like Selfridges or Harrods food halls etc. Im unsure whether this says more about Waitrose or about the standard of supermarket fish in London. They often have spankingly fresh organic brown trout, which is highly recommended. Welcome to the Canary Wharf Massive. cheers J
  2. Oh dear Now you don't want people to think you're becoming low maintenance now J
  3. This is the Laduree "Baiser" which is coconut and fruit based. ← Yeah one of the recent creations. Of the top of my head white choc on outside. ?strawberry confit/compote inside, poppy seed cream. Could be wrong about the compote. My memory clearly not what it never once was... The straight patisserie is genuinely impressive, although would say there isn't much competition in London... ta J
  4. It it doesn't have to be dinner, most of the mich star places have prixe fixe lunches in the £30-35 range. Order tap water (don't be ashamed!) and you can just about get away with it. Try The Capital or Tom Aikens for best execution. ta J
  5. Was a relatively high profile chef in London in the mid-90s. Cooked at L'Odeon and Bistro Bruno, published a cookbook. Middling * food and decent notices, if I recall, but a bit before my time. Didn't know he'd resurfaced Ta J
  6. what paper bird said especially given macs at Sketch are 50p to go i think, although there aren't nearly as many flavours J
  7. no idea luv were you thinking of reffereto (sp) in a hotel nr blackfriars? J
  8. Order the Special Mixed Grill, and the Sweetbreads if they're in Ignore the normal cooked dishes The Pide is also good J
  9. 1) What kind of idiot steams scallops then sears them too? Scallops overcook easily enough already with either/or 2) If it was autumn menu on the website truffles would either have been Summer or preserved anyway right? J
  10. Yeah once you get deep into the expensive-posh-delicacies price really can ramp. I think it would be hard to get to $1000/head, though it could be possible including the XO cognac . Just think the usual suspects... whole braised sharks fin, abalone (dried is more expensive that fresh), birds nest, seasonal specialities (once had a plate of hairy crab roe which was about $100) &tc. ta J
  11. If you're thinking of Ottolenghi you may as well piss off to Angel Mangal across the saw. Great dead sheep and will definitely be space to spread out ta J
  12. macarons are nice, though the ganache fillings not as velvety as PH the presentation and the boxes are exquisite. really nice. had an ispahan which I though was a bit thuggish; the macaron too heavy and too much cream in the middle and not enough lychee. I hear good things about the sit-down food ta J
  13. In my experience, decently executed, boring, pricy I think Circe liked the Peking Duck though...
  14. Not one dish I hope!
  15. Huh Harvey Nicks Food Hall don't mind my luggage And the Wolesey let me keep my skates on Friday late! Now that's what I call service... J
  16. €165 is a very aggressive price point Much more than London (pace Sketch) Comparable to Paris! J
  17. Tried to get in after a nice afternoon skate in the park today but got tinned as apparently roller hockey sticks are verboten (though wild accusations of murder are fine... if you're the owner that is...) Four mini-macs are six quid (ie a pound fifty apiece) which is more expensive that Pierre Herme in Paris. Flavours on the menu outside were the usual expected... vanilla, butterscotch/gingerbread, raspberry, lemon (I think)... ten regular flavours in all... orange blossom the current "special"... Fairly extensive dining menu too. Foie gras with gingerbread macaroon sounds nice, if pricy. Full of smartly dressed people without roller hockey sticks ta J
  18. Dunno exactly but you'll be in the region of 40 quid for lunch, 65-70 quid for a la carte (also available at lunch, which is easier to book and more chilled out) and about 80-85 for the tasting Early Jan a good time to come, its relatively easy to get bookings in London in the post-Christmas lull Though to be honest the most exciting high-end food in London at the moment is probably at Tom Aikens or the Greenhouse - which are both cheaper ta J
  19. Just gave them a ring Opened today Anyone fancy a trip? J
  20. Garlic shoots Wonderful uniquely meaty texture Haunting flavour Why doesn't anyone use them???
  21. I'd LOVE to see Marshall's face if Ledbury gets a * and Anthonys doesn't
  22. Look on the positive side... maybe the price of foie gras will crash thru the floor and we can all stock up... fresh foie gras freeze quite well, if I recall J
