  1. my aoplogizes to jhlurie and rachel. the sarcasm of my comment must have been lost over the cable modem. if there's *any*thing i enjoy it's "loud raucous discussion." trust me on this one. i am most likely going. i'll email when it's definite.

    China 46

China 46 gets a "very good" in today's NYT. maybe we're on to something?
  3. that be the one. many thanks. brain topped working after lunch at D'Artagnan, which was pretty tasty.
  4. good for you. don't let anyone talk you out of it. a perfect winter night for a meal there if you ask me, which no one has. order that thing, i forget what it's called, the filet with pate surrounded by pastery??!?!? and welcome to egullet. enjoy your stay both here and in NYC...and be sure to share your thoughts on OIBL!!
  5. i don't think i'll fit it. i might have to beg out.
  6. of course. it became the only pizza place i ordered from when in hoboken. and there is truth to the ole "relative" story. i don't think any love is lost btwn anyone in that family when it comes to restaurants. i just wish they could all be good. as an aside, not many ppl use "~" to imply "approximately". color me impressed.
  7. i just noticed that you mentioned Kinchley's in your first post. i only say 'pretty good' because it was so long ago! and my taste buds weren't the perceptive machines that they are today when i was in my early 20's. i probably didn't even know how good it was! i see you mention grimaldi's in hoboken. if you haven't already, i really really really suggest that you go to brooklyn's pizza in edgewater or hackensack. simply blows grimaldi's away. no comparison. you owe it to yourself!

    Nobu

no, but i'd like too! i know that chef morimoto is opening a place in Philly. i for one would be pleased with another psuedo-nobu-caliber restaurant in town.

####, i'm considering going back tonite!!! we went during the week at about 3 PM. we were the only ones there for sure. maybe tonite will be different.
  11. Brooklyn's Brick Oven pizza is now open in Ridgewood, along with hackensack and edgewater. i tried it the other night, and it's just like what i remember from hackensack. it's byo. the best pizza in ridgewood no doubt. much better than the "other" brick oven place, New York Pizza Factory. i also remember that Kinchley's tavern on Franklin Turnpike in ramsey is pretty good. haven't been there in probably 10 yrs though.

they've got a set of, nerves, putting a photo gallery on their site, i'll say that much! it's obvious outside and in, even in the photos, that it was a diner at one point. which kind of adds to the charm i think. it seems like they just needed any place with a kitchen and tables to get their food out, and they found one! the h--, um, motel behind it is undergoing some remodeling. should be quite a looker when it's done.
  13. some ideas: virgil's - BBQ. 44th btwn b'way and 6th. manhattan chili company - tex-mex. 43rd and b'way ESPN zone - burgers and everything else i suppose - 42nd and b'way heartland brewery - burgers and the like. 43rd btwn b'way and 6th. enjoy!

Capsicum is a word for pepper, as far as i know. it is indeed on the menu at china 46 several times. in fact, i was there this week, and my guest asked "what's Capsicum?" after a few moments it came to me, correctly or not. at any rate, the important part here is that i found this place and went to it and enjoyed it immensely. had the "soupy dumplings", or soup dumplings. a great dumpling filled with pork/shrimp and broth. a bit tricky to eat, but well worth it. china 46's version was delicate, with a very thin dumpling. i've seen these dumplings heavy and doughy. these were spot on. also had a dungeness crab. this was wonderful. a huge crab, broken up into legs/claws and body, over rice noodle with a garlic/ginger/cilantro/scallion sauce. it was really quite good. and huge. also had kung po chicken, which was very good. i like that they offer a separate part of the menu labeled "rich tradition in america", which consisted of egg rolls, wonton soup, et al. this gave me a feeling that i was being somewhat "authentic" when ordering from the regular menu. hey what can i say, i'm a sucker for that kind of thing. i assumed this place was on rt 46 west of the turnpike, but it's actually a bit east of the TP, on the westbound side of 46. it is byo, and there is a liquor store the exit before headed west (grand ave?) in case you forget. the liquor store had a decent enough selection of cold whites at reasonable prices. my favorite chinese used to be Marco Polo in Glen Rock (and for those of you who know me, you know i've hated chinese food for years, and have just recently "discovered" marco polo). but i think now china 46 has taken that distinction. they have a website thanks to all here who piqued my interest.
  15. it looks like "Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf" is rising to number one quickly. i'm beginning to question this poll's accuracy. ;)
  16. now we've drifted to crushes on food tv personalities. i'm in love with the skinny tallish woman on Calling all Cooks. at least i *think* that's the show. she used to have horrible hair, but it appears that a stylist got his/her hands on her. wilfrid, you're thinking of jack mcdavid with booby flay. jack owns jack's firehouse in philly. i thought he was great. booby would treat him like a hick, jack would say something that sounded sweet but basically made booby look like the booby that he is, and booby wouldn't even get the fact that he was just made to look like, you know, a booby. love that jack. wish he'd come back. i can't take one more half hour of looking at booby surrounded by those "friends" of his. who *are* these people??!?!?!
  17. cite can be pricey. it's fun though, especially the "wine dinner", which is about 65 bucks, and includes an entree, and app, dessert, and unlimited wine from a selection of 4. a very good deal. puttanesca on 9th and 56th is pretty good italian with homemade patas. i haven't been there since they expanded, but i'd imagine they haven't gone downhill.
  18. think "elliott smith" ;) actually, i find sarah's show a bit too trite. it seems that her audience is probably 50 something woman. not that there's anything wrong with that. but i do watch it if it's on. good eats, however, does a fantastic job of mixing humor and wit, visuals, hippness, cooking science, and dish preparation. i could basically watch the show all day every day and never get sick of it. quote from yesterday afternoon: mrs. tommy, as i'm flipping through the TV Guide: "who's cooking?" me, aftering seeing emeril's name: "who do you think." the threads, how they do drift. 19. the january gourment (or is it food and wine) has a very simple and very good braised short ribs recipe. went over very well this weekend with minimal effort. :)
  20. JUdson grill. 52nd 6th would i get pelted with rocks and gargabe if i suggest ruby foo's? 49th b'way maritime - 49th 6th.
  21. as have i. and you'll rarely find people respond to this point when brought up during the slagging sessions. both emeril and bobby (and bourdain) seem to have pretty strong personalities. so it goes without saying that some will like some and some will like others (and most will hate everyone if they're successful). personally, i like emeril. i find him humorous. i find his restaurants decadent and fun. i also like ming tsai, even though i probably spelled his name wrong. i find his food fantastic, and i respect him because he's gracious and intelligent and as laid back in person as he is on TV. bobby flay is the kind of guy i wouldn't ever hang out with in any situation. i'll never go to one of his restaurants. the naked chef, however, could easily fit into my group of friends. bourdain, well, he just frightens me. :)

    Aquavit

i'd imagine they'd be pretty accommodating. especially considering the prices of the 14 course tasting (500 for 2 after tip if i recall). i remember balking at an oaky chardonnay and it was replaced with the previous steely selection, free of sigh.

was the duck in the salad the super-crazy-crispy-roasted-forever kind? or the fatty-can't-really-eat-this-without-pulling-the-meat-from-the-fat kind.
  24. i have gotten borderline horrific service at the Lincoln Center outlet. so much so that i was about 2 beads of sweat from knocking the matre d on his ass. other than that, the service was horrible, the food was not as good, and it just sucked overall. i've always received wonderful service and had lovely times at the 1st outlet. i've probably been there 20 times, and i don't remember one that was a "miss". although, you might be able to convince me that since the expansion there, service has taken a turn. but that could be expected since they practically doubled the size of the place.
  25. OK, i have to finally ask: what is a "taquito"?
