    The Progressive Wine List

i see, as usual, this discussion will center around the types of places that have sommeliers to begin with. oh well. so much for the other 95% of restaurants.

    The Progressive Wine List

i can't think of anything that adequately points out the absurdity of this statement. it's a good thing i know that the only reason he said it is to get into a big discussion on "p-ism," as the indian spicing routine is winding down.

    Tuscan

it seems that this place closed briefly and has re-opened under rocco dispirito, that handsome chap. any word on this place? i can tell you that pasta dishes are running at about 29 bucks. not sure if they're meant to be shared.

    The Progressive Wine List

Yaacov, most lists are like that already, to some extend. prices go from lower to higher, grouped by region. i'm not sure how that fact fits into this discussion, however. i think i know a bit more about wine than the average consumer. and the average consumer is the person going to most restaurants. however, given my choice, i like a progressive wine list. edited for speeling.
  7. plotnicki, i think, claimed that it is the best strip in the city, so is started ordering the strip there. i go for lunch. for 20 dollars, salad included, it is at the very least one of the best deals in the city. the steak has been hit-or-miss. i don't claim to be an expert on steaks, but i have enjoyed the palm for dinner and lunches alike. however, i go with good company, and that's half that battle for me. point of reference: s&w: usually a good steak and decent service, depending on the night. ben bensons: fatty horrible steak old homestead: had a rib eye. very good. i don't have ribeye at steakhouses generally speaking. keens: i always enjoy my meal there. again, this might be due to the fact that it's usually pre-game, pre-concert, and my mind is on the company and the night. never walked away unhappy. gallagher's: i've been unhappy with the over-the-top-gruffniss of the service, and i didn't find the steaks all that special. les halles: mid-range experience for steaks at best (all things considered) michael jordons: won't go back. never been to: PL sparks prime strip house it should also be noted that i used to order filet mignon. now i order porterhouse or strip. i'm still coming to grips with my taste and preference as far as the different cuts are concerned.

    The Progressive Wine List

i don't know about that. i fancy myself as someone in between those two descriptions, and i like a progressive wine list. usually. wine geeks know what to look for, regardless of the grouping. at least, they say they do.
  10. i've sampled decent specimens at Cafe Centro, Les Halles, and Django. hanger steak, that is.

  14. where's the cell? is tracy still at bellevue/siberia then? Are you saying that Siberia has moved into Bellevue? DIVE NIGHT! i wasn't saying that. it's just that tracy had his hand in both. but to answer your question, yes, siberia moved in behind bellevue.
  15. and i say we just keep busting his balls about that ridiculous head of hair until he invites us all to the club. no man his age should have that much hair. no man i say.
  16. all of this talk is making me very hungry. edit: that seemed inappropriate after liza's informative post. they came at the same time.
  17. i've always been told that they don't have menus at Lugers. as this urban legend? edit: ah, i see that that TONY blurb says that menus are rarely used. which means they do have them. ok. carry on.
  18. i tried this place for lunch yesterday. it holds about 32-34 people. a lot bigger than i expected. also, a lot more upscale than i expected, though not enough to put me off. dark wood, burgundy walls, cherry floor, you know the deal (great bathroom). i have little experience with this type of food, save the occasional 2 am doner kebab at Bereket on Houston street, which is always just perfect. however, this place seemed to be decent enough. i had a doner kebab as a baseline. it was served over either rice or french fries. i chose french fries, which were tasty, but underdone. the dish was garnished with a bit of shredded crisp lettuce/parsley, a grilled tomato, and a grilled pepper. i think i'd skip the fries next time and ask that the meat come served over more of the greens. that mixture, with some yogurt sauce, was perfect. the grilled lamb dish (name escapes me) was a bit tough. but the flavor was right where it needed to be. especially the burnt bits. the lunch specials seem to be a particularly good deal at 8 dollars. however, these aren't available on the weekends. this fact wasn't brought to our attention until we tried ordering one. i found it curious that they don't offer any of there meats on pita, in the form of a sandwich. only "platters." 12 dollars worth of doner kebab is just a bit too much at lunch. i would have appreciated a 9 dollar doner kebab sandwich. the service, as one might expect, was amateurish. soda was served in a can with an iceless glass. water was refilled promptly. 1 app, 2 entrees, and 3 sodas came to 40 dollars after tip. a lot more than Bereket.
