  1. actually, it does light up just about the whole area, which is pretty much the extent of my work station. the photo is exaggerating the concentration. but the first thing i thought afterwards was, when am i going to put up more.
  2. welp, i took your advice FG and bought a 3 halogen light set (GE) that plugs into the wall. what the hell, outlets i got. it's hard to show in pictures (or at least i haven't figured out the best way) how much light i have now, but these images, taken with night vision and no flash, certainly make some sort of exaggerated point: before: after: somehow, i don't think painting will be quite as easy. all of this tells me that we could all use a thread on quick, cheap, and easy way to make your kitchen way better. i'm guessing quite a few of us have some ideas.
  3. i like Mrs. Dash even less than i did before.
  4. same is in just about every photo i've posted, if anyone wants a closer look. their website doesn't do much for them.
  5. since i don't want to get involved with an electrical project, i've been looking for batter-powered lights for under the cabinets. yes, i need more light there. i looked all over, and can't find anything except for those flourescent deals, which i know don't throw much like. i'd like to find more info on these lights before i buy one. does anyone have recs on battery-powered under cabinet lights?
  6. that's another issue altogether suzanne. right now, there's a big flourescent fixture on the ceiling. i like it because it's pretty bright. mrs. tommy hates it because it's ugly. but given the set-up right now, i can't imagine anything else providing as much light.
  7. he was kidding. i have to say, of the people i've known to add salt before tasting food, i've never heard one say "oh my, this is too salty". something tells me that these people like their food more salty than the rest of us, just as i like my food more peppery than most people/cooks. same with hot sauce. i throw it right in the pho or on the pork with basil before tasting. can't be too hot for me.
  8. anyone who responds after that has to work the parking lot.
  9. well, i am, without asking. regardless, if you have a big bowl of rice, a bit of soy seems logical. although if i dip a bit in the soy (which has wasabi as well), and it falls in, all bets are off and i go for more rice. the ration is very important or else it's just a soy-laden mess.
  10. good point. i gave them my old ones. but, i've bought them pots/pans, wine glasses, kosher salt, and countless other things. *very* good point.
  11. color me impressed. my mom makes some things pretty well. mac and cheese, meatballs, things like that. as for the rest, i usually have to take over. meat well-done, vegetables cooked too much, par boiling ribs. oh it's a nightmare.
  12. i put pepper on my food without tasting it. does that make you mad at me?
  13. we'll put *you* under those lights and in front of the cameras and see how good *your* memory is.
  14. i'm not positive, about this, but knowing how liberal their return policy is, i don't doubt that you could return a plate if you chipped it, or even broke the thing. they have a crazy mad return policy that might be worth considering along with the cost. although, as i suggest, my plates haven't seen any damage in three years of heavy use.
  15. Do you think that is interesting? i think it's fun. there's not enough of that sometimes.
  16. enthusiast, thanks for the kind words. yes, they are in pretty good shape, and they're decent enough cabinets. however, they're just too dark, and the impact on the look of the kitchen is too much to bear.
  17. there are countless things in this life more annoying and concerning to me than this. in fact, i'd imagine that guessing the answers while watching would be something that more than a few "foodies" would actually enjoy.
  18. there's no way i'm going to strip anything. i was involved in a few stripping projects over the years, and i don't like it one bit. the cabinets, as they are, look like the pic below. note the grooves every 3 inches, which will surely be the death of me if i paint them.
  19. huh? probably not. i already know where the booze at.
  20. i'm using plates i got from bloomingdales about 3 years ago. we use them all the time, and they're still in perfect condition. check here, although i don't think ours are as ornate. or maybe they are, and i'm just used to it. either way, it's pretty subtle.
  21. oh my. that decor is very, um, NY.
  22. i don't allow egulleters into my home. Even if they come bearing paint brushes and pecan pie? hmm. let me give that some thought...nope.
  23. i don't allow egulleters into my home.
  24. i've got a crappy cabinet in a bathroom that i think i might tackle as a test. probably the smart approach i suppose.
  25. and remember, ladies should *always* flash truckers on the highway. it's only right.
