  1. What a fascinating report! My first cousin is currently working as an English teacher in Hothot, Inner Mongolia, China nad I always pester her with foodie questions and pics. She never answers. Your report makes up a whole lot with my curiosity in that area.
  2. Peter, you can tell Yoon Hi that those popcorn makers that go with a bang (more like a cannonball boom) is very much alive here in my part of Korea. There is a drawn whistle that blows before the popcorn cannon explodes. Kids would cover their ears and then the boom of exploded kernels will fill the air. LOL
  3. 168. BBQ. Mainly ribs featured more than once in this movie. The main character seemed to savor them very much from a certain BBQ shack. "Maid for Each Other?
  4. 123. "you know what a putenesca is? it means naughty girl's pasta." CLUE: said while the character's cooking, to a little girl, who hasnt eaten yet, and is kinda lonely. it might be "bad girl pasta" that he says. "Leon"?
  5. Becca - I did the same thing, I backed off on the butter and let it thicken for awhile before pouring. Hubby saw me making the glaze and dipped his finger into it. His eyes popped out and proceeded to take more than 3 finger dips while exclaiming "this is good! THIS IS REALLY GOOD!". Hubby ate six rolls last night.
  6. My friend gave me a small bottle of this... Um, what can I do with it?
  7. Sick with bad asthma and a touch of bronchitis, I fixed this for supper... Korean glass noodles (Japchae) in a a container... Gyoza dumplings My humble meal in front of my computer (eating while posting on eGullet)... And for dessert, I went a little crazy. I made homemade cinnamon rolls for the first time. Marlboro Man's favorite cinnamon rolls
  8. What do you do when you can't sleep and you're sick with asthma and bronchitis? You get up and make this.... Confessions of a Frontier Woman's Cinnamon Rolls The problem making this bite-size is that hubby snatches one and pops it into his mouth everytime he passes by. I know, I know... I'm a rabid cook.
  9. Count me in as one of the guilty part. Usually youngest son would want the toy or in some rare times, I'd want the toy or prize (usually a winter blankie, oven mitt, resealable microwave containers, etc.)
  10. Ooh! DG, that crust ... what's the word for it? (My Asian Cuisine chef would smack me upside the toque for forgetting.) ← in the Philippines the yummy brown rice layer is called idtip (sp??) ← Just to make a note... I haven't heard of the brown rice crust called as "idtip" (and I know 3 Filipino dialects). Maybe it is another Filipino dialect. But in Tagalog/Filipino, the brown rice crust is called "tutong" (pronounced as tuh-TONG)
  11. Doc, what a beautiful picture to end a beautiful travel blog. Sigh, all that food and all that sights. Can I be adopted in your family?
  12. Thanks for the wonderful report Kim! I love seeing Mrs. Shook's pic reflected when she snapped a picture of the LadyM Cake Botique storefront. Oh, love your pic with that cone of fries, too! LOL It's nice to put a face behind the name here in our food forum.
  13. I agree what the others have posted - that is one cute cat picture (of course, very cute tabby too!). In the Philippines and here in Korea (I just found this out recently) the crusty rice at the bottom of the pot is also cherished and divvied up - like what Smithy posted. My mom and grandmother would purposely fire up the rice pot to produce a nice brown crust which my Dad and sister-in-law would hoard among themselves.
  14. I decided to test two new recipes today for dinner: Chicken croquettes Bacon-wrapped enoki mushrooms (kids gave this two thumbs up) And for our veggie dish - Beansprout Stir-fry with Squid and Chicharones Eldest son couldn't wait to dig in...
  15. Bruce - would you believe it was the first time I had brussel sprouts? I love it! Hubby wasn't much af a fan so that means more sprouts for me! Sigh, I just love looking at your food pics. The colors are so vibrant, I could almost inhale the aromas and droool....
  16. You mean you've actually tasted sweaty armpits before?
  17. Oh my that Poon Choy pot is to die for. I would hoard that and eat all day. Love those scary lighted eyes! Oh and that succulent crispy skin.
  18. Peter, did any of the family members eat any of the crunchy critters on a stick? How about you? ny offal experiments? I was drooling over that sea urchin photo. I'd agree with XiaoLing's grandma, I'd be scared to eat any of those food-on-a-stick. But I would be sorely tempted.
  19. We found some Australian steak, some brussel sprouts at the local E-Mart store. Dinner was steak with sauteed onions plus steamed rice plus braised brussel sprouts with bacon.
  20. oooh, they have this totally legit 'raw ramen' snack called 'Mamee noodles' in Asia/Australia. You crush them into bits while they're still in the bag, open the bag, fish out the msg sachet, then toss it all in. good stuff. ← Oooh they do this a lot in Korea! My kids have taken the same route. In the supermarket, they actually have noodle snacks speicifally made for this (made to crush, and then add the seasoning packet). I'll post some pics later.
  21. It was sure cold Peter. But whenever the sun came out from behind the clouds, it would warm up a little. The adults made a beeline to the maekkoli wine jug as soon as they got to the temple. LOL
  22. Toliver, I thought this -> 163. Dumplings play a big and important role. They are a key to solve a mystery for a man's incarceration. ~~ was correctly solved as the korean movie Old Boy.
  23. I found out that in the first official spring sunday, the entire town (well most of its residents) of Janghowon would trek up to the Baekjooksan mountain for some hiking, spring cleaning and free noodle lunch. This yearly treks are sponsored by the local Jaycees club which one of my friends is a member of. He invited us to join in and have a chance at the raffle held on top of the mountain by those who could complete the hike up. Prizes up for grabs were tv sets, mountain bikes, microwave ovens, 24k gold tea sets, etc. Assembly at my son's elementary school at 9:30 am. My kids brace themselves in the brisk autum wind. After a few speeches and off we go! It takes about 15 minutes to hike to base of the mountain. We finally come up to the start of the hike up. Jai pauses and looks at the beautiful view. Billy is just raring to go... We finally get to the Buddhist temple on top of the mountain. The temple provided the free lunch for the day and the Jaycee wives help serve it. We were going to have Kalguksu - cold handmade noodles with kimchi juice and veggies. The fresh veggie kimchi juice is ladled from this huge vat. After getting our bowls, we join the rest of the lunch group sitting on the ground (yes, that is loose gravel everyone is sitting on). Good thing I brought a picnic mat for me and the boys to sit on because boy the ground was cold. The noodles were perfect - cold, refreshing and the kimchi on the tables to add to it were the best I ever had in the 4 years I've been here in the country. For drinks, the local bank gave away pepsi and chilsung cider cans while those craving for water can drink from the fresh mountain spring beside the temple. Adults and the elderly line up for maekkoli, a wine fermented from rice. My friend told me that farmers would drink this homemade wine after toiling in the fields. It has a low alcohol content, pleasant taste and gives a full feeling to the tummy. After lunch, the raffle was held and I saw a lot of acquaintances win prizes. Well, the kids and I ddin't win anything but we didn't come home empty handed. We climbed up a mountain, shared cold noodles with a whole community (sampled the best kimchi ever) and came home with a sense of accomplishment - we belonged here.
  24. Here in Korea, most of the formed circular charcoal disks are made out of coconut. They smoke wickedly and add a tremendous flavor to the barbeque. You can find a picture of it in the recent blog that I did when I cooked the Chicken Inasal.
