btw, Zagat could have slightly outdated info. WHen I went a few years ago, it was around that price, (no more than $200/pp for certain) but I know the cost per person has ballooned up alot.

Thanks guys! Turns out someone in Ottawa decided to host a BBQ for the couple instead before all of us went off to our respective events. Domus was fantastic though! Had a great lunch there. Need some suggestions, my friends. I'm in Toronto putting together a Bachelor/ette dinner in Ottawa wherein everyone will dine, drink, possibly be a little bit rowdy and then the boys and girls will part ways for their respective shenannigans. My dining research tells me that Black Cat and Beckta are tops to hit, as well as Urban Pear, L'oree du bois, possibly, Par-fyum. However, unless I'm mistaken, these all land on the classier side of where we really want to be and am needing some alternate suggestions. I'm trying to avoid Asian places, since they're a dime a dozen in Toronto. I'd also like to stay in and around the downtown area, so it's just a quick cab ride anywhere we want to go. Help? S'il vous plait!

Hmn.. Terra comes to mind, but it's pretty far north of the city. Also Auberge du Pommier has a room, but I'm not aware of how many it accomodates. That's at Yorkmills and Leslie. You could try and book out Linda, the upstairs and nicer space of salad king I'm also not positive of the capacity.

Had the Linzer and Marzipan this weekend and the Linzer was really good! Will be trying the chocolate and coconut ones in a few weeks! Or maybe sooner, since they're slabs and I can sneak a piece...

Here are a couple links on it: one and two. My family has had little success in finding fresh pandan in Canada. We've seen frozen and we have a bottle of pandan extract. It's used in a lot of malay cuisine, (desserts mostly, I think, but that's just from what I recall), and it's a very subtle aromatic. It adds that "something" to the taste. Usually makes things green from boiling the leaf. My favourites include the coconut spread "Kaya" or "Kayang" (Guy-yang), and some little coconut jelly that was made in little leaf-boxes for my cousin's wedding. Those I absolutely adore. As well as the pancake thing above. I really have to go back sometime and get them to show me how to make it and then let me write down the recipe. Though I may not be able to reproduce the results here in Canada, at least I have something and can try! T_T

I *love* those Malay crepes! When I go back, I eat as much as I can. (... uh.. of everything, in fact...) I should try making it here, as the ingredients are more easily found these days. I think the pandan leaves are the sticky point, but I have pandan extract... In the end, I think it's all about the coconut+palm sugar for me.

I think we're keeping it super simple this year - we're going around to all the meat places and getting some burgers to see which one's the best. I'm currently a fan of Nortown's 8oz burgers - SO TASTY. for the first time, we have had foods all done... we don't know what to make for dessert! Maybe just fruit, cheese and icecream...

Abra > I used the recipe slkinsey posted and it worked really well for me. Try a different recipe and see perhaps? The non-stick is really helpful. My second go at crepes this weekend didn't work so well, sadly. I thought my first attempt yielded much thinner, more delicate crepes, though I don't think anyone noticed except for me. However, I'm finding like Chufi, that I can't stop making crepes! I made another mille crepe too and I'll be making one next weekend. I've been doing my mascarpone filling so far, but I think perhaps I will attempt the pastry creme that everyone else has done... any other reccomendations? edit: link fix

Agreed - George's patio was what was Verity's patio. I love love love that space.

Allen's is always great! And up until they closed it, my favorite, (though non-alchoholic), was Verity's patio - tucked away from the road and like you're in another zone altogether. you may want to check out NOW's Patio Guide for the alt-spots around town.

Humane killing? Can that be a term? Quick and if possible, painless, death for anything I eat is preferred. Not that I'd know for sure, but... Also very hypocritical of me because I haven't stopped eating foie gras and (milk-fed) veal - neither of which are terribly humane in the creation of the end product. Still, boiling something alive? (*I know, I know lobster..) Skinning while alive? I mean, can't you take the extra minute and smash its head in? Then you'd have to consider if dying in nature any less painful? I think it's a karma/respect thing in the end if you kill quickly. Also, slightly less psycho connotations, (as thanks to CSI, I know that psycho killers have an affinity to torturing pets! heh), and a generally higher (societal) moral elevation (*subjective and changing, as always). *edits

Have we covered Pocky yet? I buy every kind I've never tried. Though my current favs are Maple and Butter (This one is from Pretz, actually), Pocky G (both regular and stawberry, less easily found these days), Black Sesame, Almond Crush and the new Strawberry one with bits of freeze-dried strawberry in it. Mmm.. Pocky.

So this was the day after I made the mille crèpe. I had leftobers, but I was seriously craving some cheesy spinachy goodness, so: Spinach cooked with garlic, chopped thick-cut bacon, mushrooms (sautéed in the bacon fat!), and chunks of camberzola and more crèpes from that brunch: with icecream and apple filling (flickr) | artsy shot of a strawberry/banana filling (flickr)

Abra > you can, of course, pay more, but it's easy to find a cheap crèpe pan. But having one is not necessary. I own a cheapie one myself and it's well worth it! SO! I decided to make the mille crèpe. I decided on using the piles of strawberries on hand and lemon zest mascarpone frosting for the filling. Ran out of frosting, (was using leftover stuff I had on hand), so it's short. Regardless, I got good reviews from my taste panel! And here it is: and a sliced view: I have step x step photos up at my flickr album. Too lazy to upload and retag everything on image gullet!
